CYS: A peoples history.

Dissapointment.  Thats what I felt when I read those contest results, but in the end the decisions were made. Not necisarily the right ones, but I'm glad you stuck with them.  Its with the idea of perserverence in my mind that I've sat down to write a dramatized-documentary on the history of CYS. A people's history.  The purpose of this is to let me step aside and make room for the future. Take that statement how you will!

Genesis

And Alexp said "Let there be data."  And Alexp's teacher said "let there be an A", and Alexp said once again "Let there be more data" and thus a website was born.  It was called myadventuregame.com and with some help from his friendly neighbourhood apostles March5th00 (dan) and Chocobot (George). Together they banded through many "last suppers" of chinese food and dreamt up the future stages of the site.

The Fairview Era

Do these following stories ring a bell? Jurrasic Fairview Park, Fairview Highschool Game, FH2, Finals Week, Adventures in Lisa Land, etc? No? Well they should! these were the front runners of the site and some pretty amazing stories to boot.  JFP is still the hardest on the site and Finals week continues to be an anchor of quality on that School Based Section.

Thatguy and Karacan

Then came Thatguy and Karacan.  These two revolutionised both the basic editor storytelling and the advanced editor gameplay.  Thatguy came out with the amazing book "Psalm Walmart Game" and Karacan with "Magus: Betrayel".  Wal*Mart game is largely underrated by the population today (erm, erm: October.. Have you no respect?) and Magus is still regarded as one of the best works on the site.  Thatguy took the first ever contest and won 16 million dollars and a medal of -- nevermind: but he won some money and bragging rights.  The bachelor, Vengeance, Gauntlent 1, the classic edutainment games, a day in hell, and the very notable AKJ47 (later solostrike) as well as Eskrtion, Fleshnblood_78 and madglee.

Sub: Era The Dark Age

George was called to fight off the Titan's and maintain the great Alexp's world dominance over in the foreign lands of Iraq and March5th00's computer portal to the world of MAG falls behind the times.

Solostrike and JJJ-thebanisher

All was not lost however and a new member rose from the ashes of the departed gods.  JJJ-thebanisher, a cruel and malevolant force swept the myadventuregame.com forums.  He wreaked havoc on the comments section and made many enemies.  At first he turned a young knight: Fear against him but in the end they became very close friends.  It was then that he met Badger and he cast away his evils and became but a squire to the mighty author.  Then the second tournament of champions was hosted and again modern adventure bested the likes of fantasy and medievil fiction.  Solostrike defeated the new member and although modern bested fantasy; he proved that you can teach an old member new tricks. Cryptode beat Mattias the one knight, but Mattias retained top position on the site.  A few weeks later the most underrated story on the site by far was published: Gauntlet 2.  Amazing story.

The Founding of Chooseyourstory.com

Chooseyourstory.com was founded and Alexp and the people rejoiced.

Sub Era: The monthly contest and a new #1?

The monthly contest came and went and JJJ finally captured a victory with his "JBCS".  Soon Alexp, the grandmaster and god of myadventuregame.com published a factual retelling of his proposal to his girlfriend Katrina and it quickly swept the ratings, easily plopping mattias down to second. It was not to last and a few weeks later Mattias recaptured its position -- only to lose it again to another work by JJJ: "The Tower". It was his greatest success yet.

Tsmpaul and madglee

Even as I write this, I recognise the beginning of this era as the ending of my own thus far. These two members set a new standard for quality and length.  First came the vastly popular and still top story on the site: Mommy can I go out and Kill tonight as well as the now-published Ulysses: Episode one.  These stories both wiped the Tower out of first place but madglee was the eventual winner of the third major and fourth overall contest.  This provoked JJJ-thebanisher to write better but he still has not come out with a stronger story.  Perhaps he is waiting for the right time.  Tsmpaul came out with several other amazing stories such as Light Space, and MAU, as well as captured.  They were in constant competition for the valued number one spot.

Sub Era: Sethaniel

The aspiring and extremely talented author joined earlier but merrited little attention until busting out with a mediocre game not worth mentioning followed by Haunted which was good.  Good but decent at best compared to his amazing histoire called Snow.  It replaced light space and Ulysses at the number two position on the site and showed just how talented this author is. Is he the future?

Endmaster, Sethaniel, madglee, Tsmpaul, Rommel, YOU?

With the newcomer Endmaster and his amazing Ground Zero taking the second spot away from Snow as well as his good stories in the form of Necromancer, Trash and Alpha wolf he is garnering much attention and as he should be.  Sethaniel is back and as talented as ever, madglee has some tricks up his sleeves, Tsmpaul can never be counted out in terms of efficiency and talent and Rommel has finally come into his own.  Who will define the future of chooseyourstory.com?  Could it be you?

Underrated and not spoken for/deserving more attention: Fleshnblood_78, Jdog, Donteatpoop, Rommel, badger.

Mrm..

From where did you gather your opinions that I have no respect for the Wal*Mart Game? I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of my post saying that I thought it should be replaced off the front page with something else. The Wal*Mart Game was fantastic in its time, and had broken many thought-to-be-boundaries in using the Advanced Editor. I do not disrespect that one bit, but rather think that its time is over, and on the front page we should be displaying the best storygames, and not our history. I do, however, believe it should be given a spot on the site, somewhere, but not on the front page, as there are better storygames. Like I said, good for its time, but there is better now.

Anyway, nice third person talking. Thanks for the history, great and revealed a lot. I knew already from references in the forums most of these facts, but not exactly where they were in the timeline of Choose Your Story/My Adventure Game, so I thank you for clearing that up - I've got a better idea of when everything happened.

JJJ this is great!  lol!  It's well written and hits most of the major points of the site.  I would have added something about the CYS movies (which we thought was an original idea at the time) as well as something about the importance Havacoman in getting a lot of fun community building features we have today.

October, what advanced story would you replace the Walmart Game with?

it started off as a comparison to the Bible, but slowely faded into just random contributions to the site. though i like the effort. something like this should be done with more detail and longer 'Books'. great read though 3j.

It depends, did you put it up there because you thought it was great or did you put it up there to show off the features of the Advanced Editor? If it was the latter, I've no complaints, but if you just put it up there because you liked it, then I would believe either WWII Grand Strategy, A Jung Hero's Adventure or move Snow across (it is Advanced, but only slightly), and put Necromancer there.

OF COURSE. The Devil's Fire by Ashen_Snake is great, I just haven't finished it yet. It definitely deserves to be up there.

You at least have to mention everyone who has a trophy to award.

nate merited more attention, too, imo.  Also October.  Your version focused mostly on storygames, but those two are demigods of the forums.

Yeah, reaching Novelist without writing a storygame is very tough. October was ahead on my point total for a while, which really amazed me. (I know I'm going to get paid out for that)

While your points are certainly valid, You at least have to give me credit for writing all that.

Fair enough, It was a little offensive to take the time to write something like that and then get someone who only points out your mistakes. With everyone else the good came with the bad.

understood. but seth has a mutual respect for everyone. he didnt mean to offend. he was just lamenting what he wanted to see. but the fact is you wrote it your way. no one else did. so whens the next story coming though? :)

I'm sorry, 3j.  I wasn't trying to criticize you. (thanks for standing up for me, nate)

I was specifically responding to your addendum about underrated/deserving attention which added havacoman to the list--- as in, "oh yeah, since havvy is/was a site mod, he should probably get a mention in the history of the site."

The bit about your version focusing on specific games was related to the underrated list also-- I was just saying that that's probably why nate, etc ended up on the list instead of in the history.

I guess tone is hard to convey in text.

Yes, 3j, yes you did mention all people who can give trophies.  Again, the comment was entirely related to the underrated list and havvy's inclusion.  As in, "yeah, that's good that you added those people."

Sigh.

It's really cool that you decided to write a history of the site, 3j.  I wasn't trying to upset you.

ah! My apologies then, I can sorta see what you're saying now, rereading that.
