When it has 26 8 ratings-more than any other. is this normal? seriously, look at it!!! this shoud be rated at least a 6.

I was wondering about ratings. Mine has like 17 8s 1 7 and 1 6, and it says 9 votes were counted. Yet somehow it's a 7.

Actually I think it's just messed up.  It has 25 votes by members, 22 votes total, and all those votes up there.  Something is missing.

Who was right?

IF SOMEONE VOTES MULTIPLE TIMES THEN EXTRA VOTES ARE DISCOUNTED, EVEN IF THEIR LOGGED OFF!!! OK? (no offense intended madglee).  Likely someone liked your game enough that he wanted to boost its rating (stupidly -- anyone who is a moderator should know this wink wink nudge nudge as it is no new invention) so he logged off and voted tons.

Plus if the games average rating is 7 then any stray votes from 1-4 will not be counted,etc.  I think there  might be other small variables but thats the gist of it!

Yeah but even if it only counted 9 votes, 7 of them are 8s 1 is a 7 and 1 is a 6. How does that average to a 7?

Hehe, thanks man! Okay, I did the math, accounting for standard deviation. Used my story as an example.

I have 1 6 (which the code thinks messes up the SD, but it doesn't), 2 7s, and 18 8s. That would make:
Number of entries: 21
Sum of entries: 164
Mean average: 7.809523809523809
Standard deviation: 0.4994327848429267

So, from this data, we can clearly see that the average is 7.8 - when rounded, that would be an 8. Presumably, 8s are being excluded due to the one 6, and not being counted, because the SD is only .50, which should allow any number with .50 to be counted. Therefore, six shouldn't be counted. If that was true, however, it would be a 7.8. Ergo, this is something flawed. And I'm not forgetting about weighting certain votes over others, because the six would be of less weight than any other. And even it wasn't, the data would look like this:

Number of entries: 8
Sum of entries: 61
Mean average: 7.625 (still rounded to 8)
Standard deviation: 0.6959705453537527 (still less than one even rounded)

Yes, yes, because then in the last example, only entries between, let's see, 6.975 and 8.225 would be counted, thereby excluding 6s. And if that was true, which would be rational, it mathematically cannot be a 7. It's funny, b/c I really don't give a shit what my story is rated (look at a Day in Hell), but I would like further enlightenment into the rating system.

Sure, let me see. In my case, I can account for the ones that may be shaved from not being a member, but I have no idea in yours, which is a caveat. However, if all were weighted equally, here's what we would see. Alex may be talking about how they round pennies, which was exploited in the 1980s by a very famous hacker - blanking on the name suddenly - rounding is only done on like 1/10 of a cent. That hacker took each 1/10 and funneled it into an account. After millions of transactions, I think he made like 80 billion before being busted - however, he copped a plea and now works for anti-fraud portion of gov.. Yes, yes.

Mean average: 7.181818181818182
Standard Deviation: 0.983332166035633

So, from this data, we see that the average is 7.2 let's say. Taking off even a whole 1, which is the SD (and it's only .98), we'd still get 6.1, which would negate any "6" votes. However, the average is not high enough to reach an 8, because it's a 7.2. Still, it's possible that the 2 5s and 3 6s are less weighted, i.e. not by members of the site. If these were negated to a certain extent, it should be an 8.

In a PM, I've directed Alex to this post. Being a computer programmer and no doubt a genius in math, far better than I have ever been. I must be missing something, most probably how exactly these things are all weighted. Then again, perhaps there is a minor error in code. Regardless, I hope you, Alex, value this input despite your enormously busy schedule. I, for one, would love to understand mathematically how the ratings are working. :)

member ratings are weighted more than guest ratings (uhh i didnt read everything, but i can guess that you are having trouble adding up the figures)

Yes, yes, I knew that, and no, I didn't have any problems adding up the figures. In fact, I demonstrated greater versus lesser weight, despite not knowing the exact % of lessening. I could only do this for my story because I know where the ratings were when rated only by members.

Cool. Spoke to Alex - there was a problem with rounding in the ratings and he fixed it!
