Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

Not like the animals, categories. I've noticed that Fantasy Adventure (Death Song, Magus, Mattias, Necromancer, The Tower, OMS) and Sci/fi (Ground Zero, Light Space, MAU, Paradise Violated, Paraplaniac, Ulsysses) are by far the two strongest categories competition-wise. Essentially, you have to defeat Mattias (the weakest featured in fantasy) which is a behemoth of 515 pages or one of sci/fi games (Maybe MAU? It's good but it's only a 5 length) in order to get featured over there.

Which one do you think is a stronger category? What do you think the third strongest category is? In the past, we've tried to keep the categories in order from strongest to weakest (top to bottom and left to right), should we move SCI/FI into the Modern Adventure slot? What makes these two categories the strongest? Why is it easier to release awesome stories in these categories?

Post a reply with a list of categories from best to worst.

Probably more popular categories get the best stories cuz people like working on them?

Fair enough and obviously true, do you think Fantasy and Sci/Fi are a lot more broad than other categories?

Now that you mention it, yes.

For example my story Warlords, which was un-featured, for good reason, in the Fantasy cat, imo really has nothing to do with Fantasy, as nothing in the story is magical or fantastic, just true to an actual historical setting and time, like WW2 or something. There's no Historical Fiction section on this site, and it would be too small, so I don't have a problem with it being in Fantasy even though I published it in Everything Else, which is an even broader category.

To be honest I personally don't feel anything on this site is WRONG, you know, broads and all. From my perspective I'm pretty satisfied with the site as is.

You aren't as restricted by the rules of reality with Fantasy and SciFi (And Horror but that's not as popular) which makes it a little easier to write. The Modern Adventure is a category for a "real world" setting so the stories are more bound by "real life". (More or less )

Currently there's actually more Modern Adventure than Fantasy and SciFi combined, so I'd actually say the SciFi and Fantasy categories are less broad than the Modern one. If you're obviously writting SciFi or Fantasy, you immediately know what category they're going to go into, but you could easily combine all those School based stories into the Modern category due to their setting in the "real world" for example. I nearly put Repression in there since a lot of it revolves around a school.

Of course a lot of those stories in that "Everything Else" category could probably be placed in Modern or other categories as well. (Personally, I never like putting my stories in a "miscellaneous" category)

The only other categories I can think of that you could add would be Historical, Humor and maybe Action. Though I could see Historical maybe being combined with Edutainment.

See Historical, Humor and Action are tags to me. I'm really excited to see what Alex does with that. With the on-set of the repression he had to fire most of his programmers and the team only works on moneymaking sites but there's the possibility of an expansion in September so we might get some more action here.

Mods might get a little more power so that we're more self-sufficient (featuring, unpublishing, etc.) and the category revamp so I'm really excited. Plus we've had two independents ask about creating Iphone apps for the site. Awesome stuff.

Historical Fiction too.

So you know... at the rate we're going, it may just be more time efficient if one of you guys would go to school for a few years to be a programmer, and then help program the features yourself .

We'll be back one of these days soon.

Wouldn't I need access to your database?

Nya nya.

Well, Fantasy and Sci-Fi are usually the strongest genres in any form of media, be it books, movies, games, or CYOA's. There's just so much potential in them. Modern Adventures follow in a close third, but there's more imagination to be used in Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

Very simply; imagined world > real world

I mean, my dad codes and if he were to come across some free time every once and awhile, I'm sure he could put together a few features here and there over the years. Although, again, I'm assuming that he'd need database/code access, and I don't really know how that all works.

I dont know if you were serious, but I am taking two compsci courses this coming year. And I have background in C, unfortunately i haven't worked in .net, however in a few years you never know...

By the way, its a good idea to put the two strongest categories first and a good idea to keep it current and updated (which is what oyu suggest).

Generally, the code that is kept on the server is accessed via ftp, and you edit it locally, and then upload it back to the server. In that case, you can set up users for ftp access and specifically define their access rights.

It is very hard to decide if fantasy is stronger than scifi or vice versa.  I'm leaning more towards fantasy, but it's still a toughie.

I veer more towards sci-fi because I like when stories explain the theories behind the environment. It's just nice to see when a creator of a story has put time into his story to iron out the inaccuracies. But I still really like fantasy, simply because its cool.

I think that it's stupid to choose a "better" category. Fantasy is better.
