Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

I'm not realy sure why, but I think we oughta Discuss all the featured stories in relation to eachother within there specific catagory, then we could decide what stories are the worst out of all the featured stories in each catagory. Why would we do this? Because eventually a story is going to come along that needs to be featured, this way, we can prepare for it in advance. Ide imagine the author kinda sits on edge while everyone diliberates about which story to unfeature. So I'm suggesting we decide in before such a story even gets here.

I don't know about this. We are basically telling the author "Your story is the worse of the bunch" That would make me feel bad.

I think we should cross that bridge when we come to it. As is, I'm happy with all current featyred stories and I doubt one will chande anytime soon

Especially in the Romance section. Mine was the last to get featured there and that was over a year ago. And before mine it was probably 2 or 3 years. There's still room in there.

Maybe so, I still like the idea none the less. I agree fergie, all the stories in the love and dating section are pretty good. We wouldnt be telling the author that your story is the worst of the bunch, because the story is featured, meaning that in general its top notch and the fact that its good isnt even in question. Personally ive noticed that waiting to do something till its needed is generly a very good idea.

I realized, but I also know that some things shouldn't be worried about too far in advance. Most of the time it takes a while for a new story to be featured, but we've had two recent entries in the space of only a month or two's time, so who knows?

One thing I've always wondered and I'm guessing JJJ can answer this:

The featured stories list limit for each category seems to be 6 (assuming there are 6 good enough to be featured), but Sci-Fi has a limit of 7 instead. Just wondering what made that category different.

Maybe sci-fi is just on a whole different level than any other kinds of stories XD

Maybe at the time that alexp made the featured story lists (assuming it wasn't there from the start, I don't know) there were more sci-fi stories than the rest? that's the only option I can think of, other than a simple slip-up or just too many good stories.

Direct answer from JJJ. I had a forum asking about featured stories.

Yeah categories should have 6 or fewer featured stories per category.

So that is the number. Categories that have fewer probably don't have enough Quality stories.

Why don't we just do top X rated stories in each category get featured? Then once a month or something check what the top X are.

Then maybe have a "Recommended Read" category or something. Stories that the admins felt were good but just never well rated.

It would certainly make it much easier to judge which stories stay and go.

Nah, March and Alex have said in the past that they don't want featured stories to be based on rating. March and I do take it into consideration though.

RE: Ugilick, I like this idea. To whoever said that it's insulting to the author, I totally don't agree. Having the worst featured story is not an insult. The only issue with the idea is that it would take a long time to get it done.

In all honestly although it had some alien themes, "The Object" felt more like a mystery/puzzle story for me.

No need for what? I know Killa already came up with a way to avoid there being to many stories featured in the sci-fi catagory, I was just saying that i feel its the least of the now remaining ones. Or are you saying that there is no need for it to be non linear?

Well, if we're still doing this thing, my list for the featured stories to be replaced are:

Sci-Fi: Mechanized Assault Unit

Modern Adventure: Vengeance

Fantasy: Magus: Betrayal (I still think it was a good story, but it's just outclassed compared to the others)

Edutainment: The Firebird

School-Based: Schooled For Life (That was probably the hardest decision out of all of them)

Mystery/Puzzle: Creature 2

Fan Fiction: Danny Phantom's Adventure

Everything Else: The Adventures of Phoebe McGee

Love & Dating: Desperate Heart

Horror: A tie between 331 Oakmount Drive and Geek.

 

I realize that many people will probably disagree with this, but this is my opinion and if we ever need a vote to see what should be replaced, you can just refer to that.

1. People dying isn't a factor in my rating, just how much I liked the game.

2. Love & Dating was definately the second hardest for me to decide.

Fantasy Adventure: Magus: betrayal (it’s to incomplete without its nonexistent sequel)
Modern Adventure: Vengeance, for sure
Sci-fi: MAU
Love and Dating: I’m kind of torn, I do feel that Snow, Orpheus, and Alexp’s the proposal are untouchable.
as for the rest I haven’t read all of them yet, so I’m not qualified to cast a vote on it.

So here's what would happen if a game came up that needed to be featured. If there are multiple stories then it would come to a vote between those stories.

Fantasy Adventure - The Tower or Magus: Betrayal
Modern Adventure - Vengeance
Sci/Fi - HP3 or MAU or Paraplaniac
Edutainment - The Ramayana or Julius Caesar or Jung Hero
Fan Fiction - Any of them except Hell Girl or Carmen Sandiego
EE - Big Time
L&D - Prom
Horror - Any of them

The others don't have 6 featured stories. So yeah, I only need your preferences between the stories listed in Fantasy Adventure, SCI/FI, Edutainment, Fan Fiction and Horror. Those are the only categories in contention. The others are decisions I feel comfortable making.

And I don't need them until a story that deserves featuring arises.

I would like to say Tower for Fantasy Because it would never work for me.

Fan fiction It is a tie between the two that aren't Star wars the last Galaxy.

I need to read all the featured stories, fallen behind. But here are my opinions, for what they're worth:

I still think Oakmont Drive and Magus:Betrayal are stories with some of the best writing and craft on the site; I doubt any story could supplant them. That said, I would not imagine they would be the first to go.

Wal-Mart Game could be removed from modern. I know it's legendary on the site because of its history, difficulty and many items, but I always felt like it was more an exercise in using the items than a gripping modern adventure.

Yeah, Oakmont is great and so is Magus. Based on the way the site is going though, I don't think either could be considered untouchable. I'd say that Magus would be unfeatured before Necromancer, Death Song or OMS. I'd say Oakmont might he the best horror on the site. Would take a lot of great horror stories to knock it off.

Invariably, the old-timers on the site will prefer stories that have been around for a while, and newcomers will be biased toward newer stories.

Fantasy Adventure:

6. Ulysses (ONLY because it's a demo, otherwise it would be 2.)

Little to no memory of the storygames featured here. The Free Hand was amazing though, don't unfeature it.

Actually, yeah, for all the other categories I don't think it would be fair of me to rank them, I can't remember them as well as the ones above, although I will say Snow should never be unfeatured.

Mechanized Assault Unit is short and linear, though very well written. You should definitly read it, it wont actually take very long. I think if you pick the top choice each time you get through. HP3 is Way better than HP1 and HP2.
