My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Since I have chosen not to continue my old games, I have a new concept that I'd like to hear ideas for. It's a really bare idea right now, but I'm hoping to extend the storyline. So far I have the beginning and the endings, and some characters.

The beginning can be explained with the description I have for the game:  "In a terrible storm, engraved to stone for a century, destiny states you are the creature sent to shake the kingdom and bring down the King, changing the kingdom forever. You're a burden. A curse. A plague. A black print on the pure white canvas.

From birth they had taken you away and slaughtered your mother. Imprisoned for years, you will finally be free, and all hell will break loose.

Revenge will be damn sweet, if you can retrieve it that is."

-_- If you don't know what it's about yet: you break out, and take down some dudes...you are a destined curse...yada..yada.

The endings I have are pretty raw as well, you can choose to:

-Take down the king and rule, revealing things I shouldn't say for spoiler reasons. I have this one kind of figured out so luckily I don't really need help and I don't need to say any spoilers.

-Edman (see characters) finds out how to send you to hell and slaughters you. This may be due to revenge reasons, or if you chose to make enemies with him.

-You choose good and get everybody to side with you

-You destroy the kingdom and end up destroying yourself somehow.

And I'm open to any other ideas for endings, or characters, which are listed below:

CHARACTERS

Edman- Young wizard who was cast out from the kingdom and nearly killed for having magic. He wants revenge, and could possibly work as friend or foe.

Al- Her father, who may be the cause of her mother's death and may want to kill her as well. He would most likely be a foe, to add drama.

Cora- Her friend who she may or may not fall in love with, the princess who hates her father, that joins her if she chooses a good path.

Joan- Her friend who she may or may not fall in love with, that joins her if she chooses either path, toward the beginning.

King- Vicious man who wants her dead and resides in her father to carry out the deed. He has many secrets.

(Pending name)- Old woman who guides her and helps her see the light, tends to her when found wounded.

So, like I said. I really need some help with letting this story take off, and would appreciate even the smallest of contribution and opinion. I am open to anything! Thanks!                                                  -Warriorstar

Glad to see you moved on from your old interest.

Umm... I'm afraid I can't give good suggestions due to how 'different' I am from almost everyone in here. But you know I'm a nut for wars, fights, and stuff like that. Not a fond of making magical things though.

And both good and evil endings should be profitable endings. I want to rule the kingdom but I destroyed myself somehow? No way!

Lots of interesting ideas here, but from a realism standpoint you're going to have to come up with a convincing reason why the main character wouldn't have just been quietly disposed of in the beginning instead of locked up with an excellent reason to want revenge.  I mean it's not like moral or legal issues were any kind of concern, given everything else.

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Thanks, you do make a very valid point there.

First of all, give us reason why your main character is captured and has a lust for revenge.

A destined curse? So it's like "I'm the chosen one to be a hero and save this land from the evil king!" or ****s like that? That seems common and linear.

There has to be more than all that why you want vengeance against your enemy.

And if you want suggestions, mine might be a little 'extreme' or 'unfamiliar' for you.

I want more 'battle-scarred' characters. Knights, soldiers, mercenaries, officers...

And here are some ideas for characters:

Knight -- Male or female, it's your choice. This guy/gal came from a family who had no name and little fortune. (S)he felt how hard and tedious life was. But he rose among the ranks and became a great warrior. He gained noble status, became a knight, became an officer, and is one of the best soldiers in the entire kingdom.

At first, (s)he might view the MC as a disease. But soon, he'll realize the truth... and you become friend with him/her. Possible romance option. Skilled with various weapons and a tough warrior.

Rogue/Thief/Archer -- A dark-skinned male/female who is a descendant of a tribe, like the Indian during the American Civil War or tribes in Africa. (S)he grows in the forest as a hunter. Skilled with bows, axes, and daggers. Either he is a traveler, a thief, or someone who will show empathy and save your ass, it's up to you.

Mercenary -- A battle-hardened mercenary. He was adopted by a mercenary when he was a kid. He trained how to use weapons and be a warrior. Life was rough, and the battlefield was the place where he often belongs to. He traveled from land to land seeking for fun, pleasure, and riches. Skilled with swords and dual-wielding, or maybe tends to use a zweihander instead.

^admits to not liking the genre much or being one to give advice on it, gives a ton of advice anyway. xD

"That seems common and linear."

Common? Sure. Prophecies / destinies are a dime-a-dozen in fantasy, but some of the best and most beloved works have that cliche and nobody cares because they're good stories. Actually, some people love that cliche because it's part of what makes a fantasy a fantasy. "You're special." "You're the chosen one." "You're a wizard, Harry."

Linear, though... no. Multiple endings were already listed. It's a common idea that, while you may have a prophecy or some other grand expectation of destiny hanging over your head, you can choose to twist the outcome or ignore it entirely.

Lol. That cliche does get on my nerves. I've always toyed with the idea of a story where there's a chosen one who's destined to destroy the tyrannical dictator and restore peace and balance to the world... But he dies really early on, so everybody's basically fucked. cheeky

Eh, I've never been that bothered by it. Seeing it subverted / screwed with is nice, though. Star Wars is the only example I can think of off the top of my head, with the whole "bring balance" actually meaning "will massacre hundreds of his companions" bit. Fun times.

Though, did it honestly bug you about a story you really liked?

Like Briar, that always gets on my nerves. I'm tired of seeing that cliche over and over again. I can never understand why you don't get bored with that.

I'm the opposite of you guys, indeed. A clash or war of sci-fi versus fantasy would be fun though.

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

... I didn't say I've never gotten bored of it, I said it didn't bother me that much. >_> You and your assumptions.

"You guys"? As in, Briar too, even though you're saying you agree with her? xD

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

I don't like your assumptions too -_-

Jeez, we always end up like this like every fucking time!

This is sort of hilarious though :P

You didn't. xD At least, not to my knowledge.

The Lego Movie was actually my favorite take on the "chosen one" cliche. Where the guy makes a prophecy about a "special one" that will "save the realm, and be the greatest, most interesting, most important person of all time." ... Then in the end he admits he just made it up. ^_^

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Lol, I forgot about that. It was pretty good, yeah.

Thank you for bringing this up! I didn't know how to reply to this discussion till now.

I dislike prophecies because usually they don't add anything to the story. They're just used as a crutch to make sure it moves in a certain direction.

I'm a complicated and random person, Kiel. That's why I gave ideas anyway.

Not a fond of that cliche. And I am aware of how different I am from the rest of you guys. I like reading Tom Clancy's stuff which you guys might not interested in.

I have worse magic imagination than you guys. That's why I prefer guns, blades and bows rather than magic. I replace magic with technology.

I like Dark Souls better than any fantasy fictions. Mostly because of setting, plots, and characters. Yeah, I know that favoring someone over most fantasy characters who doesn't talk at all and is one of the game's hardest boss might be weird. But Artorias... I just really like him.

Also, this site lacks any good war stories. Choice of Games have some good war and action stories. This site has too many fantasy and sci-fi and modern are somewhat lacking. I feel like I need to keep things balanced, so I intend to make things that aren't familiar to you guys.

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Not the reason I would've given...

How do you know anyone here doesn't like Tom Clancy? I can never understand why you keep trying to put your various fandoms at odds with fantasy, btw. People can and sometimes do like both. xD

... You like it better than any fantasy? Don't you mean "any other"?... Since Dark Souls is fantasy?

And what the hell are you talking about? We have more modern games than fantasy and sci-fi is doing okay too, because it has a full featured section and a fair amount of games. The categories we're actually doing poorly in are school-based and love and dating. Even edutainment has more games than either of those two.

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Goddamn it. Every time I talk about things, your reaction will always be like this. I'm annoyed xD

"Any" and "any other" are different in meaning, huh? Okay then. Dark Souls is a dark fantasy, and I usually prefer dark fantasy.

I still feel that modern and sci-fi need to be improved. Most of the featured ones (modern and sci-fi) are inferior than the ones in CoG IMO.

School-based and romance? Meh, I don't give a fuck about them since I'm not a fond of those xD

We wouldn't keep having this conversation if you didn't keep treating it like some kind of weird war or rivalry. Besides, you've always been the one to start it in our PMs.

A lot of genres are going dark these days. Gets kind of dull seeing "gritty" reboots so often.

Okay? Well, you know how the internet works, don't you? "You think you can do better? Let's see it."

Yes, I know. And people are going to dismiss the genres you like, too. But really, I find it baffling that you act like you're alone in enjoying modern. If you really wanted to support something that didn't get enough love, or that we hadn't seen enough good come out of, you'd be supporting our smallest category, school-based, not our second largest. I'm also surprised you're not knocking everything else for curb stomping every other category.

I'm not a fan of the whole 'chosen one' thing either to be honest. Not to say a good story can't be written in spite of it, but it's one of those from the checklist of fantasy plot points that's so overused that unless you get very very creative with you can easily fall into the trap of it feeling derivative and lazy.

I don't know, I guess it just feels cheap that the main character is declared Special and Different and The Most Important without having done anything to earn it. They often get this distinction anyway just by virtue of being the main character and kind of/sort of the author's stand in, so making the inhabitants of the setting including the universe itself recognize and support this idea is a bit too much. Too easy of a way to circumvent the questions of 'why is my character involved in these events in the first place, why is what they're doing important and why will they win' with 'because destiny!!!' as well.

Again, not saying it can't be made to work, but the entire premise just offers too many options and temptations for taking the lazy way out unless an author is aware enough to guard against them.

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Wait, what about a magic user? Like a mage, wizard, or monk?

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

I'm also curious why the main character was just imprisoned instead of killed. I mean they killed his mother so whoever "they" are clearly don't have any qualms about murdering innocent people... And the main character's the one who's supposed to be cursed and dangerous, so... Why not kill him to?

My new game! (Thank goodness it's not WC)

Oh I addressed this in my actual first page, and not the description I guess, whoops. You make a good point though. I just stated simply in the story, "Why do they bother ruin her life and the lives of many others, and not slaughter her if they hate her so much? Well let's just say it's hard to destroy a gift from hell." I'm thinking I'll make her immortal, which may come in handy or act as a burden to the story.

Thank you all for giving your opinions, and like I said it was a very raw idea. It will need much tweaking and you all made very valid points. But also to the chosen one debate, I'd just say it's more of an evil chosen one. But thanks, I'll start working!
