It's a much more interesting concept, and something that people will want to explore more, if you make combat a foregone conclusion, in which he will lose. Don't want him to stop being badass? Fine. Do a lore, give him a potion of Heroin, "Hollow" him, so all his muscles are gone, make your foe exceptionally powerful. I dunno, get creative. The drawing magic should be used as a means of careful, strategic planning to avoid combat. the emphasis should be on how cool this power is, and how the world around him is very dangerous. There could also be character development and the like, but you should save that for your D&D buddies if you want your game to be contrivedly difficult. The whole open-ended puzzle aspect with a million different creative solutions means you have to be able to think of creative, practical solutions. It would create an entertaining, engaging challenge, like Dark Souls, rather than a "HAH LOOK AT ME I'M SO EDGY I CAN MAKE EVERYTHING TEDIOUS LOL" challenge, which is what you seem intent on doing.
