In the forgotten village of Virelow, deep within the Hollowing Vale, there grows a singular tree known only as the Inkroot. Its bark is black as spilled ink, its leaves shimmer like parchment soaked in memory, and its roots twist through the soil like veins of forgotten stories. Centuries ago, the Inkroot was planted by a scribe who had lost her voice to grief. She poured her final words into the earth—ink, blood, and sorrow—and from that offering, the tree grew. It is said the Inkroot feeds on memory itself, drawing forgotten truths from the minds of those who pass beneath its canopy. Travelers who linger too long find their pasts rewritten, their names smudged, their regrets blooming into strange new realities. Now, the Inkroot is guarded by the Archivists of Hollowing Vale—cloaked figures who speak only in riddles and tend to the tree’s ever-growing library of bark-bound memories. But something has changed. The Inkroot has begun to weep ink, staining the rivers and dreams of nearby towns. Whispers speak of a root that has broken through the veil between worlds, reaching toward something it was never meant to touch.
