A Day in Hell

Like many of the other commenters mentioned, this story game is reminiscent of an older time. Regardless, even 24 years later(almost a quarter of a century!), it's still really fun to play.

The branching in this game seems remarkable, and it all centers around Matt, a 20 year old man with a really annoying roommate. Your roommate Stephanie, seems to be every single negative roommate stereotype rolled into one unpleasant individual. She's a right old See You Next Tuesday, and it isn't long before you snap.

It's almost like the game wants you to snap, as it presents very frustrating encounters and then the option to kill her appears. You have to try very hard to do the right things, and after all that, you get a very boring ending.

The story was very entertaining to play. Each page was short and right to the point, and I really enjoyed just how many options there were.

I really liked the path where you choose to kill her because it's the most entertaining path in the game. I love how the MC offers some reason to the checkout lady like "I'm painting my house", even though she didn't even ask for anything. That was really good.

The game ultimately ends really fast, but there are so many paths you can do, everything from murder, to IT support, to going out and getting some drinks, to finding a job, that it's a solid 30 minutes of amusement, and ultimately I really liked this game. The violence was the best part, this author writes it unflinchingly and goes into detail. The craziest outcome is where you kill the annoying roommate, a random neighbor, and then your upstairs elderly neighbor(even if it was by accident). At least you get your just desserts and suffer an embolism, landing in the hospital. That was probably my favorite ending. I mean that ending was crazy. I'll give it a 6/8.

When in doubt, kill more people. Truly, an important lesson for us all. ^_^

I game with multiple endings and consequential choices! It's such a relief to run across one in my tour of CYS that was. I liked the humor and the writer's voice.

Some of the very best characterization you'll find in any of its contemporaries. This story was still featured when I logged on for the first time back in 2011.

Funny enough, I would have liked it better if we'd had more time for her to piss us off. Her obnoxious behavior was not nearly oppressive enough for long enough. We needed more! I wanted to want to kill her before I went and did it. Is that too much to ask for?

Frying pans aren't really my thing either. Why couldn't I punch her in her ex-Mormon throat or strangle the life out of her? Those are the kinds of choices that matter.

Leaving another comment just to say, of all the endings, I would have never imagined that buying red wine would give the best living situation. I like the humor and I empathize with Madglee for having to live with such a shitty roommate. I've lived with some real jerks, so I totally empathize with the author's frustration that drove him to make this story game. In a way, through art, he managed to avoid completely snapping at his crazy roommate.

I remember reading this story WAYYYY back when I joined this site in 2014. I completely forgot about it until today, when I was going through the modern section to earn a trophy.

While it may not hold up to stories like Eternal or The Tale of the Foolish Princess, this story is definitely a classic. Even after 20 years, it still does better at world building and suspense then a lot of these newer stories. I do admit I wish there had been more of a build up to why he committed the murder, because it was slightly disconcerting to see the main character go from acting, speaking, and thinking completely normal, to beating in his roommate's head with a frying pan for being an annoyance. The love for his mother does add some character depth, however, and the roommate Stephanie is a mormon, so killing her was definitely enjoyable.
