So, as it stands right now, as far as I'm aware, the only possible replies to threads are to already existing posts (or the OP), so I'm making a suggest to amend the forum mechanics to allow for the inclusion of original posts (ones that are not just the OP). Uses of this, I believe to be relatively obvious. It would allow the merit of an original thought without it being relegated as a reply.

Whats the difference between a original post and a reply to the op? Just a bit of spacing it seems to me..

Just click 'non-threaded view' and all the posts line up on the left.

Really, after a person's shared their beans on the subject, so to speak, an additional topic is just brought up in the discussion, or the OP is replied to again for a clean slate below. Although I don't well see how else these could be used.
