contests concept

maybe sometime in the future there could be a competetion every month. a few years ago i ran yahoo writting club. yes, i, no games in months, ran a writting club. my point being. every so often we would pick a topic and the members would write about it. maybe we could do this monthly and give out extra points for games that everyone likes the most. topics could be: school, fantasy, fighting, mystery, humor, horror, action. these monthly competitions wouldnt need judges picked. everyone would just play all the entries and pick their favorite then the winner could get a few extra points for making it. just a thought.

sounds great! only MAG points right. and you dont need to enter a game because i mean a game a month is something only JJJ can do!

while others may enter their own games for you to judge etc.

MAG points was what i was refering to. yes, its not manditory but it would encourage people to write outside of their realms. for me, the only game i really have made is in modern. having a concept that everyone is working towards would bring more games to categories that are lacking. ie, school, edutainment, dating. the only downside i see is that there isnt a lot of time to create a game in a month. maybe if there was like a list for the next couple of months, example:

december- mystery

january- school

february- fantasy

that way people could be working on a game for that particular month before it comes around.

like i said it sounds like a great idea, hopefully alex likes it.

I think this is good; however right now we lack the numbers to do this -- there just aren't enough people making games.

This is what I hope to focus on in the next phase of development -- GROWTH.

ok but DO NOT forget this idea. It is good because it WILL get members involved.

Ideas For Frequent Contests

I was thinking about this but instead have it so that it comes every 6 months. Once growth is high this would be cool. Anyways, we should also have divisions such as every 3 months (Jan-Mar) people would be in a division for the contests

I've totally warned up to this idea, and want to start talking about the next contest. I'm OK with sponsoring it with prize money, just not $175 again. One prize, maybe $20 or $25? What do you guys think?

I'm open to ideas on the rules. So here's what we need
- prizes ($ and MAG Points)
- duration
- eligibility (first publish date, etc)
- genre (I do like idea of restricting it)
- judges (no admins for this, I'm thinking solostrike, JJJ, and Micci2000, if willing)

The Next Contest?

1st place: $25 and 100 mag points
2nd Place: $10 and 50 mag points
3rd place: $ 5 and 10 magpoints

Every 4 months the contest is held. Of these four months, you get two months to make the game.

January to Feb. - Making
March - judging
May to June - Making
July - Judging
Octoer to November - making
December - judging

and you can play around with the summer months.
I dont mind being a judge, but am i allowed to enter a game then?

The Next Contest?

Judges can't enter the contest.

Also, I think Four months is too long; I'd be OK with a monthly contest, maybe every other month.

Four months lets you guys build Epics -- nothing wrong with that, but but we need to balance it out with shorter ones. Take the DIE ZOMBIE! series, each was a perfect length and aeach were awesome (which is why they won).

i like epics alex lol. maybe we could have several mini contests during the year but have a big one at the end of the year. follow me...

do solos recent idea with the making then judging times over the course of the year. but through out the year promote the Big Kahuna of all contests for the end of the year...

january-make a school game

february-judge

march-make a fantasy game

apri- judge... so forth through the whole year, but also in January promote a huge contest for the end of December. this one would be like the one you just put on alex. it wouldnt need the same money prizes but the some hoopla and stuff would be good. the monthly contests would encourage smaller games but the big one at the end of the year would still show encouragemetn for the epics....wow i hope thats clear.

I ***love** the epics myself. I can't tell you how cool it was to see THE WAL*MART GAME finally ecplipsed. There will definitely be a (less frequent) EPIC contest (well, a contest that only an epic could really win, due to its run length).

These smaller contests would hopefully create the shorter, finish in 15-20 minutes games that we need more of.  We should also think of interesting constraints on some contests to make it interesting ...
 - classic game only
 - MAXIMUM page count

lol, max page count.

The Next Contest?

interesting constraints you want? hmmmm,

1.only one End Game Link in the whole game.

2. A game about a Rabbit

3. No less than 15 words a page.

4. No less than a 6 in length.

5. A game that falls under a certain Category (mystery, fantasy, so forth)

6. A game with a super hero.

7. A game about business

8. A trilogy series.

9. A game with only animals

10. A game using only the names of members on the site.

there are a good 10 to start with lol. im sure you are used to my 10s by now.

I like the idea of more frequent contests, but i still gots to put in my 2 cents!
The judges could rotate, if someone was a judge, but wants to put a game in, there could be replacements...
Also, i like the idea of frequenting contests, but like, seriously... monthly won't let anyone put in really good ideas, and will take out the pizzaz of contests... i say four months MINIMUM! The point of the contests (from what i understand) is to make everyone build good games. But vengeance wasn't made overnight.
Let's see what the prestige of Badger thinks about all of this nonsense!

The Next Contest?

Vengence certainly wasn't built overnite. But many great games were.

But you know all those EDUTAINMENT games? Those were done in a matter of a few hours. THE RAVEN, for example, would be exactly the level of storygame I'd like to see win one of the mini-contests.

The Next Contest?

But if everyone's concerned with a monthly contest, when will we have time to make epics.

Good point. Soething to keep in consideration ...

My Thoughts:

Have one big contest in either the summer or the winter.

In the summer many kids are out of school that can write well but they might not be on the computer much.
In the winter kids are in school but they aren't as likely to be off the computer.

Have smaller contests like 2 or 3 that last for one full month each and have a maximum length.  That way they are easy to do.

Hello, does anyone like my thoughts here?
