Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim.

Anyone log into Steam today? If you have, you've probably noticed that modding on a video game can become monetized. People are making money off mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. What do you guys think of this? Some people are completely for it, and some are vehemently against it.

Here's a TotalBiscuit video discussing the matter.

K den...

But why would you laugh? There's nothing wrong with Nexus.

Hahaha, good one.

Seriously, there isn't anything wrong with Nexus. Mods are pretty easy to install, you won't have to pay 50 bucks or whatever just for adding a mod that changes the game slightly, and they have an okay mod manager.

50 bucks or whatever.

My God, did you watch that video at all?

Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim.

I know, 50 bucks is waaaaaaay over how much the mods are sold for.

And no comment on Nexus?

Nexus isn't as good as Steam.

It's still good.

I actually think Nexus is great. So many more mods are available on Nexus which isn't the case for Steam, and they're all free.

Let's also mention that some mods on the Steam Workshop require mods that can only be found on Nexus.

Nice avatar.

But I agree...if you're a lazy ass player like me Steam is fine, but if you really want that combination of premium mods that'll give you the Skyrim experience you want, having Nexus downloaded is quite essential.

I haven't really used Steam, but I feel that Nexus has a very good modding community and a large number of high quality mods.

Eh, mods take a lot of time an energy to make and the creators don't always get a lot from it. I know I wouldn't pay for any though.

The game's being flooded with negative reviews. Its rating has dropped from the long-standing 98% to 88% in these past few days.

Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim.

85% now that I've checked it. This is completely ridiculous.

Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim.

What the actual heck does paid modding have to do with the quality of the game itself that all these negative reviews are coming in?

It's because when people don't receive their little lagniappes, they head to other places in search for them and rob the store of their good reputation.

HA! That's awesome. Valve got its balls completely cut off.

You can't have balls when your job is to sell things, they might offend people and then you'll lose customers.

Yeah, if you ever take Business Communications in college, you'll notice that 3/4 of the class is about writing apology letters.

Valve decides not to continue asking money for mods and promises a full refund to anyone who has already paid.

Wow. That's good, that they decide to stop asking for it.

"Removing Payment Feature From Skyrim Workshop

28 APRIL - ALDEN

We're going to remove the payment feature from the Skyrim workshop. For anyone who spent money on a mod, we'll be refunding you the complete amount. We talked to the team at Bethesda and they agree.

We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing. We've been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they've been received well. It's obvious now that this case is different.

To help you understand why we thought this was a good idea, our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities. We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. We wanted more great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor, and we wanted that to happen organically for any mod maker who wanted to take a shot at it.

But we underestimated the differences between our previously successful revenue sharing models, and the addition of paid mods to Skyrim's workshop. We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating. We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there's a useful feature somewhere here.

Now that you've backed a dump truck of feedback onto our inboxes, we'll be chewing through that, but if you have any further thoughts let us know.

This is actually good for Valve, to realize there mistake. Maybe they won't do it again.

Valve apologies for the paid modding thing

I actually think the paid modding system might work on some games and might actually be good for the community. Like Valve has said, it would help those modders who put a lot of time and effort into their mods or those who'd even want to make mods as a job kinda thing but have no job security. I actually commend Valve for realising their mistake here though, that Skyrim definitely wasn't the best place to start since modding has been so deeply imbedded into the game for so many years already.

Optionally paid modding, with price set by the players, but it starts at a minimal price so Valve at least has something to work with.  Should be relative to size of the mod.

And yes, most definitely not on Skyrim.

DayZ would be a good way to do that. Definitley.

Optional paid modding was already an option when this was released.

Was something along the lines of humble bundle where it said "pay what you want".

I think it would have been much better as a "donate" button.
