LA DISPUTE

They're my favorite band. Not really metal so much as post-hardcore but similar.

ah. the band is pretty awesome, but yeah i'm more into good ol' heavy metal.

You mean like Classic Rock or like Megadeath and Slipknot?

Underground Bands

Classic Rock, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Progressive Metal, PowerViolence and to a lesser extent, Black Metal and Power Metal. Megadeth is a great band, and Slipknot was awesome in the 90s before they hired Corey Taylor as a vocalist.

We have somewhat differing points of view. I don't have much of a taste for Megadeath or Slipknot. These bands, while talented, adopt a style that relies on heavy guitar and very strong percussion. Nothing wrong with it, in fact, I'd say it's the definition of the genre. The music I tend to listen to leaves more to the imagination, the guitar does get heavy at times but it usually darts in and out with poignant strings before relapsing again into a catchy but distant rhythm. The most important part of a band to me, is usually the vocalist. I love Jordan Dreyer from La Dispute because of his emotion. He can go from screaming to speaking to singing to near-crying in like a minute in a song.

Andria is my favorite by them and probably my favorite song in general. I love 0:45 to 1:45 the best. It doesn't really start til 0:45.

This band is awesome. Perhaps I should look more in to this Post Hardcore. What are some other good bands?

Underground Bands

yeah, i always thought the guitarist, drummer and bassist should be just as important as the singer.

i actually don't like Slipknot too much though. They had a couple of good records and it went downhill from there. I actually listen more to bands like Rush and Voivod now. I'll have to admit, La Dispute's singer is pretty sweet

Bury Your Flame and Nine by La Dispute round out my favorites by them. Said the King to the River is great too, it's their most popular.

I like Rush, they're cool. You heard Steel Panther? hehehehehehe

I have no idea why the bands have to be underground. haha  Can't they just be really good?

I don't know if it's everywhere, and I'll save myself the rant, but in my area, everyone's obsessed with pretending to be open and "different" by (ironically) closing themselves off from anything that isn't underground/indie.  Yet, they buy all their clothes at Hot Topic, which is owned by a corporation.  In their attempts to be more individual, they grow together into more of another brand of pop-culture, and, in my eyes, have become nearly indistinguishable from the others who openly follow only what's popular.  Only the latter does so without lying to themselves.

I'm not saying you're in that camp - because I don't know you - I was just pointing it out because it's prevalent, at least where I live.

Now that that's out of the way, some bands I think are certainly worth listening to are:

Between the Buried and Me

Cradle of Filth (pre-Nymphetamine)

Ragnarok

Graveworm

Behemoth

Dark Funeral

I've just started listening to Dark Funeral, because up until recently, all I've heard was "Final Ritual" from them, and I thought it was pretty good, so I figured, why not check 'em out.  I like what I'm hearing so far, haha.

Yeah, sorry I hvent been on, we've been moving these last few days. I'll look into these bands. oh, and to answer your question, i'm definitely not one of those guys, my favorite bands are Rush, Voivod and Venom. The underground part is just because alot of the more popular 'heavy metal' bands now are doing all the DUN-DUN-DUN deathcore, which has championed only Converge and The Red Chord. The rest, including Bring Me The Hairspray, are oh so painfully similar. Most modern heavy metal bands that deviate from this pattern seem to be underground. lol

I'm not sure if the music video above will work as I've never posted a Youtube video to these forums before but it's Elaborama by Every Time I Die. You've probably heard of them, they're not underground if that's what you're looking for, but they're one of the few screamo bands I still like (along with La Dispute, I Killed The Prom Queen and a couple of others). They're metal but with hints of the jumpy/start-stopping math-rock sound in there, so naturally I'm drawn to it. If the video doesn't work, look it up on Youtube.

La Dispute just won't leave me alone. My musical taste has grown so much in the last year or two that most bands that I loved are no longer bands that I listen to but somehow La Dispute never ceases to rank among my favorites.  Also, Zero, your rant about indy and scene kids totally applies to my location. "We're so not mainstream man!" ... "Actually, yes you are, you fucking skinny jeaned conformist douchebag."

Also, you're so hardcore. Behemoth is so brutal. Do you like Bring Me The Horizon?

Caveat: Nothing against skinny jeans.

I heard of a band recently called Hecate Enthroned, and they're pretty awesome.  I'm trying to download their discography, but no one's uploading it. haha

I've heard of Bring Me the Horizon, but I don't think I've ever heard their stuff.  Are the good?  I can YouTube 'em.

Too hardcore for me but my bestfriend loves them. It's not that I don't appreciate the talent of a band that intense, it's just that my ears try and pick out that elusive guitar line that never comes through for me. Also Oliver (the lead singer) got sued for pissing on his audience. Awesome guy, he's actually hilarious. His interviews are so prime. Also, their mosh pit is by far the best mosh pit you'll ever find.

Oliver Sykes is like the biggest asshole you'll ever meet.

Haha, he is a funny asshole. This is one of my favorite interviews:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwW-mUF3nJE

But I heard some of their stuff, and I'm not really feelin' them. Something that really doesn't do it for me is that it doesn't really have much of an instrumental presence. Like, one of the reasons I like Cradle and Graveworm so much is because of the orchestral feel, as well as the actual orchestras they include in some of their songs and shows. And whenever I do actually hear some instrumentation, it's all flooded by blast beats and an overwhelming use of the drums, at least in my opinion. One of the songs I heard, though, I think it was called Chelea, had a little bit of a change up toward the end that I liked, but it didn't last very long. In any case, I will say, he's got a really talented voice. haha

This is also one of my favorite interview/questions, for Gorgoroth:

Underground Bands

His voice is great, but I agree absolutely precisely with your description of their (lack of) instrumentation. It's just, I feel similarly to the little bit of Behemoth that I've heard.

Underground Bands

No, I agree.  I think that about half of Behemoth is just a bunch of noise, haha, but the other half is pretty nice.

Decade of Therion

Act of Rebellion

Dragon's Lair

Hell Dwells in Ice

The Nephilim Rising

.. Those are all pretty good, I think.  I'd say like many bands, they've got their ups and downs.
