Introduce yourself and get to know the community.

Hey everyone

I just joined today so... may as well introduce myself. I've been lurking for a bout a week already, I've played Ground Zero, Necromancer, Mommy, Order of the Midnight Sun and a few others already, and read a bunch of threads throughout the forum. I haven't commented on them yet as I just joined yesterday and didn't want to comment as a guest (or leave a crappy comment, as I've been sick for a while). Ironically, me getting sick is how I stumbled on this site, as I was bored out of my mind and didn't have the energy or focus for intensive games. I've played CYOAs in the past, but their quality didn't come close to the ones here, and I'm really glad I found them. Finally, I've read many of the artifcles in Help & Info and/or plan to do so for the rest soon. That said, I'd still appreciate advice, but I'm not completely clueless either, haha.

Anyway, about me... I'm sort of a jack-of-all-trades in game development. I can design, write, create the art and program all to some extent, all self-taught. I'm not bragging, as I'm pretty much average or below for all of it except design and art, but this brings me to why I'm here. I've been trying to become a successful game developer, specifically for Flash-based games, but it's tough doing it on your own. I have a hard time juggling all the roles, and trying to do it for profit sucks a lot of the fun out of things. Since sponsors aren't interested in games made widely available, I also can't get much feedback while working on them, further lowering my enjoyment of the process. That's part of why I decided to join CYS. Making a game here, I can do so mostly without the pressure of trying to impress a sponsor or keeping it underwraps, and the programming part is mostly taken care of for me so I can focus on what I enjoy more.

That all said, I just have one major concern about making stories on this site. That is, can I later use my own stories in games (or books, if I get into that) I make for profit? I read in the Terms of Service that permission must be asked from CYS to use any works here commercially, and saw no exceptions for it involving an author using their own work... so I have to ask. While I sent a message via the Contact Us link asking about it, I haven't received a reply and since it suggested I'd get a quicker response on the forums, I figured I'd post it here along with my intro. Hopefully someone can answer my concerns, as it's the only thing holding me back from going wild and writing to my heart's content. I'd love to write stories and share them, but I don't want to limit my ability to use them in the future to make a living off of.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer. I'll be checking back regularly and look forward to being a part of the CYS community.

You, my friend, have amazing taste in stories. That's mainly because 3J forces it upon all new users. And welcome to the site.

Hey everyone

Thanks, haha. I did notice that 3J recommends Ground Zero and Mommy to most new users, but I had already checked those out before reading that. (though I was prompted to check OMS and Mommy when I read 3J claiming OMS held the #1 spot and then Mommy's author disputing that, lol)

It's a really tough call. Both of them are amazing, if not for that TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE HABIT OF USING THIS WORD Awesome, Mommy would be #1. Although both of them are freaking amazing.

If you need help, you can ask me, but I'm kind of retarded so ask someone else instead. Unless canned bread suits your needs, my seagulls are busy painting coffee tire-flavored.

Also, to whoever responds to this post, I know I'm another local douchebag, but I acknowledge that in advance. Thank you.

I was confused at first, but by (WORD YOU'RE TRYING NOT TO USE) I assume you mean one of the trolls? I think I spotted him while lurking. I agree they're both amazing, though it's a bit unfair for Ground Zero due to Mommy making use of advanced features. Personally I like the story of Ground Zero better, but the gameplay in Mommy is obviously superior.

Thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on it if I need it. Right now I'm just going through the articles and messing around with a practice story (using the advanced editor). So far I've got the hang of making and linking pages and using/changing/restricting based on variables, and added my first item. It's pretty easy so far, so I'm guessing the main hangup for others must be using the variables (I only understand them thanks to experience programming in the past). Hopefully it'll continue being this easy.

And lol! Pre-emptive strike huh? *read the last thread you posted in where you were called such*

Wow, horrible grammar fail on my part. You can probably figure it out but "I agree they're both amazing" was supposed to be preceded by Ground Zero and Mommy, not... you-know-what.

"I saw him while I was lurking. I agree they're both amazing." lol.

forgiven, i all time that do.

Thaedos read all your posts so I'm moving it over for deletion. :)

What are you talking about?

Hey everyone

I'm pretty confused about this myself, so I'll just let you two sort this out?

He can't move or delete anything so I don't know what he's on about haha.

JJJ, you just emasculated Jeff in front of the kids.  Now they won't respect him! haha

Empty theats are cool, but... uh, full(?) theats are the ones that get you places. haha

Hey, Thaedos, like the name, and welcome. Jeff and awesome tend get at it, so just ignore them if you want.
And, by the way, is this your site? http://www.freewebs.com/thaedos/races.htm

Hey everyone

Hey, thanks and yes, that is my site, though it's quite old. I stopped updating it a while ago... The project of Thaedos (including all the races you see there and more) is still constantly under development, but it won't be completed for a long time.

Hmm... I seem to be more of a clown than a contributor. And what was I on that made me post the post for moving it over to deletion?

I think I've come to the conclusion that my story writing ability has completely dominated my Forum-posting ability. Therefore my ignorance on this section of the site should hopefully be overridden (is that a word?) when I quit smoking beer and drinking weed.

You're not a clown, you're a cool guy. I'm just confused about what your post meant.

I feel better now. Although my antics amongst the forums will look like a collage of excretion once I get my computer back and write Negativity. I spent my whole study hall drawing up a map of the base, and it's better than I thought. I made one for a different game that was 10 times cooler, but I'm going to work on that once I finish Negativity and the other two stories in the trilogy. Because I said so.

I'm still confused though, could you rephrase the post about moving and deleting? I keep reading it and I can't make sense of it.

Hey everyone

I think I was just trying to say that Awesome was being an idiot and that everything from his gay theatrical arrival should be removed.

However, I remember posting it on a different thread. Weird...

Hey everyone

I REMEMBER WHY I POSTED IT NOW

the whole line that started with Awesome saying "hey gay" down to where I made my post I thought was deletion-worthy. Thaedos read everything in there (and even responded) and well, Awesome is who he is.

However, we shouldn't delete anything because he's comic gold :D

Hey everyone

Sorry for soewhat spamming but 3j said: Reply to the first post in the thread so that I can delete what he says :)

Hey everyone

See, I thought you were telling Thaedos to read something so that you could delete something and I got confused haha

Hey everyone

But don't delete it because he's hilarious. Did you already? I hope not.

And yes, stupid of our possible ancestors to spell read and read the same way. I meant the read pronounced "red".
