Introduce yourself and get to know the community.

Just Another Intro

Hello there. I saw a few introductory posts before. I’m not sure how welcome they are here, but I suppose this is another obligatory ‘look, I’m here’ thread. I found this site not too long ago and really liked the content. I already played through a few games before I found out about the community. I thought I should join, earn exp while I read and play through the games, talk on the forums, and maybe try making some storygames on my own. A pleasure to join you all!

While I’m at it, I’ll take advantage of the other purpose of Newbie Central and ask some questions.  First, is there any way to change usernames? I wanted to come up with a pen name, decided on this, but didn’t realize there was another user using Gil as part of their username. Now, I feel bad for using it. Second, I was looking through profiles and noticed that people were getting experience points through daily points. How does one get that or is there an unseen requirement for it? Lastly, I wanted to ask about forum games. Is freeform style played around here? I was browsing a little through the games and noticed many seem to prefer a mechanic to them. I was considering starting up a freeform RP, but I don’t want to start something that won’t be played.

Hello! Pleasure to meet you.

'introduction' threads are acceptable and pretty common, and seeing you are asking questions as well, this is probably the best introduction thread in a while (mine was literary "Hi!")

I don't know about the usernames . . . asking an admin would probably be best.

Daily points are earned by going to the "points" section of "my stuff" and clicking on the second link that is labeled for daily points.

Mechanic based is the usual RP style, but freeform is used on occasions. If you have a good freeform game and are a good GM then people will play, I have nothing against freeform (that being said I've barely ever played freeform) and would be happy to play your game if the basis is interesting.

Thank you! I got my daily point now and all my questions answered. Glad to hear that intros are welcome. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have made this thread if I didn't have questions I probably would've used that Introduce Yourself Megathread.

I haven't really GM'd in a long while. The last time I did it, it was with anther co-GM. I may consider a simple one, but it would have to be more setting-based instead of story-based. Right now, the only idea got floating in my head for a game is surreal, sentient bar. I am not quite so sure if it will work in this type of forum.

That was done in a slightly different form before and was pretty popular (it was before my time so I don't really know anything about it), I'm sure people would love to play it.

I'll consider it. I may have to lurk more and get a better feel of the place A shame the forums is arranged like this. I would've been cool to read the old threads and see what it was like.

Did you notice there is a button on the bottom of the thread list section that says "Older Messages," I believe all the old threads are accessible.

Also, if she/he's referring to current games (But their old threads) they're all archived in the RPG reference document.

Welcome!

You can not change your username, though, if you want to change it, since you've just started posting in the site, it wouldn't hurt to just make a new account. But don't worry about having similair names with others, no one is bothered by it, ^_^

Gott go to My Stuff, then to the points page. A link will show to get a point.

Yeah, freeform was how most of us played originally.

Thank you! I had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to change it. I already have some points from games I reviewed as well my first daily point, so I think I will keep this account just fine. Besides, I don't want to leave an abandoned account lying around. That sounds kind of sad. I just hope that the similar usernames, should people see it, are seen as a coincidence. I know it caught me by surprise.

Glad to hear the news about freeform. I think I'll lurk in the Forum Games board for a bit to get the feel of how things run.

Forum Games are usually what keep the newest members here nowadays, though a well-done storygame wouldn't hurt a bit.

Understood. It seems that forum games are very popular, so I was curious about them. I'll look into them more, maybe join a game even.

Welcome. Aman and Kwism already answered your question, so I can't add more. Anyways, enjoy your time here ^_^

Thank you. I will aim to. Everyone who I've talked to so far has been very nice and friendly. I am already enjoying it here.

Two quick things, if you are planning on using the advanced editor for your story games, talk to BerkaZerka, BZ is the god of the editor currently.

Also, I would just like to say I appreciate the consideration you show, it is a respectable and surprising amount for the internet, a tip of my hat to you good sir.

Thanks. I'll have to play around with the basic setup first before I go into advanced editor. Walking comes before running, after all. However, I would like to go into advanced soonerr than later, so I'll commit BZ's username to memory.

And I've probably expressed so much gratitude in this thread already, but thank you for the compliment and kind words.

(I don't mean to be rude, but I am a ma'am, unless you meant it in a completely non-gendered specific way. Then, I apologize. )

I tend to default to 'Sir'  and other masculine terms when I'm uncertain, I meant it in a non-gendered specific way, but no apology necessary, I am often angered by peoples inability to say my name incorrectly (in real life it's Koby, but they always say Colby or Cody) so I understand a desire to be referred to properly.

Haha, my name is hell to pronounce for almost everyone I've met. Teachers either give me a nick-name or learn it by the end of the year XD

Just Another Intro

Most people don't even bother with my name anymore (my last name especially, it's Polish and very odd)

Just Another Intro

At least it's a last name, I mean, it's my first name that everyone messes up on. Though it doesn't help that it takes a while until someone can get my last name right too XD

Hello.
And i'm not sure what you mean about most games preferring mechanics: Legendary, world of demons, school of chaos, the battle arenas, frore and the corroding are all freeform.

While I (And perhaps many other) players much prefer mechanics based games, most people are far too lazy to run one.

I admit, I think I may have jumped the gun a bit. It's certainly clearer now that most of the RPing done here is freeform. I saw the RPG 101 article, some sign up threads, a few posts in the ideas thread, and a few opening threads with a list of rules and came to a wrong conclusion. That being said, the RPG document you mentioned in the post above looks very helpful. 'Will be sure to look through that first before doing anything else with forum games.

Also, in my experiences, mechanics-based games on forums usually don't run as well as those done in real time. In a way, it's the nature of the game.

Then you underestimate how willing people are to abuse freeform ^_^

Welcome to the site :)

Do you happen to like chicken by any chance? Roasted chicken by a warm, cosy fireplace with a cup of coffee?

Just Another Intro

Thank you. The welcoming committee here is very nice.

Why yes, I do like chicken. Roasted chicken and coffee sounds lovely, but I'm not too sure about eating it next to a fireplace.

Welcome. Do you happen to like Gorillas?

If you don't I will burn you while peeling your skin out.

Just Another Intro

Gorillas can't burn someone while peeling their skin out. Only the mighty Pyro Faction can :D

Bah, mustache and penguin factions getting too old for you?

We employ mercenaries who can.

There's no need to go through all that effort, because I like gorillas.

To recieve a daily point, one must simply click their "My Stuff" link provided in the left side of the screen. When clicked. go down to "My Points" and there will be a handy little link stating that it will give you a point because you're you, this is generally a bit provided to keep the unstable from killing themselves due to lack of confidence, but that's no reason to take a freebie.

Last time I checked, World of Demons, School of Chaos, some other games I forgot, and Frore didn't have many mechanics, as in dice-rolling, etc. They just had a ruleset (no Godmoddig, no Powerplaying, no Headcrabbing) to keep people from pissing one another off. The corroding is freeform by definition, and I think Legendary doesn't have any, unless one of the many GMs has decided to incorporate the old dotty-cube into their decisions.

Just Another Intro

I already found the way to get daily points, but I have to say this is the most thorough explanation of how to get the points here. The link is very tiny. If I wasn't told it was there, I probably would've missed it again and again.

I noticed a lot of those games have been mentioned before on this thread, especially Legendary - I may have to check that one out. It looks like there is quite a lot of freeform here than I originally thought. Rule sets are definitely fine. Most games really should have it, but I did have great experiences in rules-lite games before.

Just Another Intro

Yeah, the creators made it so tiny to make it harder to get. :P
