I have noticed that when I rate unrated games, my vote seems to have no influence. I imagine it has to do with the point system. If that is the case, then how many points does one need for their vote to have significant influence?

Not that I'd actually know for certain, but your points should have no effect on your rating's effectiveness, your browser probably just didn't refresh the rating to reflect your vote. 

Possibly, but I believe members with more points have more voting influence. I'm wondering how many points one must have in order to influence the rating of a game that had no prior ratings.

Point totals do effect vote weights.

Explained by 3J from what I remember:

0 - 499 points, not much voting influence
500 points, tipping point; large voting influence
500 - 5500 gradual voting influence over time
5500 points, maximum voting influence; admin

... It sounds like you're saying 500 has greater influence than 500-5500, which would be contradictory -and- really odd.

Well yes, it's true. Because when you get to 500 it's likely that you'll stick around more.

500+ does give you more influence, but it's just a bigger jump when you get to 500.

I'm trying to find the thread where I wrote that!!! But you're not quite there:

As you approach 500, your vote weight increases dramatically. So someone with 200 points is much higher weighted than someone with 100 points. 500 is much greater than 400, etc. After that though, it slows down. 600 is greater than 500 but not as drastically as 500 is greater than 400. At 5500, you have the same vote weight as all moderators do. I think admins are a little higher than moderators and owners are higher than admins.

Thanks! Okay so I was wrong Admin = Moderator strength. Anyway, yeah, point totals do have an effect on rating strength.
