Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Have you read Matthew Reilly's books? They are: Contest, Ice Station, Temple, Area 7, Scarecrow and Hover Car Racer.

They all involve fast paced, plot based stories (usually with plenty of violence) and are a perfect read for fellow teenagers.

I recommend Scarecrow, Temple and Hover Car Racer especially.

They are ok. Good for a read when theres nothing else.

I liked some of his books. Some books, like Area 7, turned me off a bit though. I don't know what it is, but some authors with soldier characters make it so that almost every single sentence the soldiers speak has heavy swearing in it. (I'm one of those people who gets very turned off by lots of unnecessary, repetitive swearing.)

I thought Temple was pretty good though, if you liked that you might like Amazonia by James Rollins.

Yeah, I love the two of his books I have read. Hover Car Racer is pretty good, and it was easy because I recognized the shape of Tasmania, but Contest was better. Contest was and still is one of my favourite books.

I don't like Scarecrow though. Not really that much into the military. Like Paul, I get turned off by unnecessary swearing.

The swearign didnt bug me, but i just felt the writing isnt that good in his books.

Well, the grammar isn't all that good, but it's fast paced and full of action. Like the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz, but with far more action.

I loved the Rider series.

Havent seen it, but my friend tells me it sucked. The problem with a lot of adaptations is they cut out masses from the book, like in Eragon (The movie of Which sucked) and the Harry Potter series. I'm surprised, because LOTR has hardly any changes apart from cutting Tom Bombadil.

Whoa there, Rommel!  "LOTR has hardly any changes apart from cutting Tom Bombadil"?!?!  There are dozens of descrepancies between Tolkien's classic novel and Peter Jackson's films, mostly resulting from the director's personal interpretation and alterations made thereby.  For a rather extensive list, see this link:

http://jackflannel.org/lotr/

He calls it a "Nit-picker's Guide to The Lord of the Rings," and not without reason; some of the descrepancies are... well, very nit-picky, I suppose, but others are fairly major and several regard vital plot-points in the original novel.  But don't get me wrong, guys, I love Jackson's films as much as the next guy.

Yeah, I know, like the army of the dead not fighting Mordor in the book, (instead it was Aragon's Rangers) But it wasn't a big deal. Cutting T.B was the only major change.

It was so a "big deal"!!  If the presence of the army of the dead at the Pelennor Fields and the Elves at the Hornburg, the absence of the sword Anduril until the latter half of the last film, the consideration of Arwen of leaving Middle-Earth, and the use of Faramir as a "bad guy" aren't major deviations in plot, I'd love to hear tell what are!

Why does it seem that no matter what thread I'm posting in, I tend to argue about Tolkien?  I haven't even been reading Tolkien lately.  Maybe a new avatar photo that is un-Tolkien-related (gasp!) would take my mind off of it.  Maybe...

In my mind those acually improved the story.  Faramir endures the same pressure as Boromir, and you can see it in the movie. The army of the dead would turn the tide of battle far better than the Rangers, It does not really matter when Anduril appears, and Arwen's refusal to leave Middle-Earth shows her love for Aragorn.

Improved the story?  No.  Made the story more dramatic and marketable?  Yes.

More dramatic and Improved are in my mind the same if they are justified. And LOTR is a fight to the death between good and evil, so it is justified.
