"The Tower: Embarking from the Far Land" by JJJ-thebanisher is out, and it demands to be read!   http://myadventuregame.com/Story/The_Tower_0x3a__Embarking_from_the_Far_Land_0x2e_.aspx

I am Sir_Lancegalawain (sometimes called Lance in the forums and elsewhere), and Sir_Lancegalawain means me.  I've been a member of the myadventuregame community for several months now, and I don't plan on leaving, although I'm in the midst of a little hiatus due to... some responsibilities. In all honesty, I haven't much to say about myself.  In the "real world", yes, I'm one of those guys with no social life.  But if there's one thing I hope is said of me, it is that I am passionate about what I do.  But what do I do?  Let's see... Most of my day is spent in school or studying.  I am very heavily involved in both marching and concert band, but little else in my school.  My chief interests are language and literature, but my favorite topic, I'll admit, is theology and study of the Christian Bible (Old and New Testaments).  My favorite secular author is of course J.R.R. Tolkien, author of such masterpieces as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.  I also owe a huge debt to C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" series, the books that really launched my interest in reading and writing when I was young.  Oh!  And this is kind of off-topic, but if you, reader, ever get the chance to read his "Space Trilogy" (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength), don't pass it by!

Anyway, I hope to be around this summer to aid with "Founder" by JJJ-thebanisher as well as to finish my own historical fiction story, "Allegiance", my unfinished (because I lost motivation and some of my reference notes) fantasy and the "Test Your Knowledge" series of quizzes over Tolkien's works.

If you have any questions about... well, anything I just said, or would simply like to "talk", feel free to send me a message.  I'll get back to you... whenever I'm next online, which in truth could range from one or two hours to one or two months.  In "real life" I guess I'm something of a recluse (and, alright, on the web also...) but I'm actually a pretty nice guy, I think.  Well, I'm sure I've bored anyone to death who was reading this, so I suppose my work here is done.

The stories you cannot live another day without reading!

I know half of the users on this website have a list of their favorite games, but more to praise their authors than to make recommendations, I will post my favorites below and in no particular order:

Fantasy:

The Tower. by JJJ-thebanisher  --More than solid gameplay built around a strong fantasy story.

Mattias the One Knight. by JJJ-thebanisher --"Play as Mattias, a young boy destined to do great things."*

Magus: Betrayal by Karacan --By now a myadventuregame.com classic!

Braak the Briton (Redux Edition) by redstorm --Step into the role of Braak, a Briton (see title) during the Roman occupation of Great Britain!

And others

 Science-fiction:

A Jung Hero's Adventure by chocobot --Because only chocobot could have written it!  Well-paced science-fiction with a bit of background on Carl Jung's archetypes, etc.

ULYSSES: Episode One by tsmpaul --Forget reading these confounded descriptions and play this game now!

RUSH! by tsmpaul --Quite possibly the best thing ever created on the classic editor!

And several others

 School-based:

John Barsby Community School by JJJ-thebanisher --I was a little offended by the language at a few parts, but then, it is realistic....

Fairview Highschool Game by fairviewcult --Very linear, but hilarious story of one man's revolt against the teachers and their iron-fisted regime (I think.  I can't really remember the story right now.  But it was good.)

Note that I have not yet read "Finals Week"

 Fan-fiction:

Star Wars, a new Galaxy by JJJ-thebanisher --The only real fan-fiction I've read on the site.

Cantina Band: Dusty Death in D-Minor by jorose --I found this entertaining.

 Love and dating:

I apologize for not having read enough games to place any favorites here.

 Modern adventure:

A Day in Hell by madglee --Creative storytelling eclipses a slightly sacrilegious title.

Cryptode by solostrike --

'A square of three dimensions
is locketh before thee,
Unlock it and thee shall be rich,
One mistake and thee shan't live again'

Poor grammar?  Maybe.  Great story?  Absolutely!!

Sorry, madglee, I still haven't finished "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight", but I'm sure it's worth all the praise it receives, even if I do not appreciate the... ermm... unclean elements.

 Edutainment:

The Left-Handed Man by Xargon --Tells the story of Ehud from the book of Judges.

The Quest for Pegasus by Missy-ga --Your chance to be the Greek hero, Bellerophon!

The Black Hand by easterangel --Great history lesson!

Julius Caesar: Stayin' Alive! by vickie_m --Change history by... well, staying alive!

 Mystery and Puzzle:

Twenty-Three by thatguy --I still can't beat it!  Ugh!

I do not wish to many any more judgments in this category until I have read more stories.

Everything else:

8 goals, 28 rolls by tsmpaul --I'm addicted!

All About Serennia by JJJ-thebanisher --Technically, it's not a game, but still...

Hockey Fantasy Pool by JJJ-thebanisher --I know almost nothing about hocket, but I believe this to be a great concept!

I've only read about half of the stories in this category

Quizzes:

Happiness Test! by  march5th00 --Amazingly accurate!

The Roman Quiz by GodsSlayer --Fantastic quiz with a great sense of humor!

Atomic Quiz by Havacoman

The Chronicles of Narnia Quiz by somerandomperson --Highly underrated!

And others

 Wit and humor

Some stories that can hardly be considered the best of their categories, but are nonetheless entertaining due to their use of humor!

Blunder Brain Bob Baldwin of Baltimore In: No Escape by funkywizard

Tastes Like Chicken by somerandomperson

And others that I can't remember at the moment

I apologize if the above seemed to be nothing more than a collection of featured games.  Regretfully, I've only read about half of the stories on the site, so if you have any recommendations, don't hesitate to send them to me.

 Introducing banjoman92!

Banjoman92, a personal friend of mine, has joined the site!  Previously, he was known as Artimis, but he has changed it due to the obvious spelling error!  I'm not really too sure what he's up to these days.  Even in the "real world" we've grown kind of distant, I guess....

I will add to these from time to time (actually, there are several I have decided to place below already, but have proven too lazy to add, as of yet) but here are a few interesting ones:

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."  ----Hebrews 4:12

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.  Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.  When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the starts, which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?  For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:  All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth throught the paths of the seas.  O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!  Psalm 8

Christmas.

Just a bit of a review for anyone who happens to read on the upcoming holiday, or in fact any time in the year!  (This contains many excerpts from the King James Version of the Bible, which is freely reproduced everywhere in the world, except in the U.K., where Cambridge University Press has the official printing rights, which I've not infringed upon.)

A few clarifications:  Using the "Find the answer" links does not lower your score.  This is why this "game" is not listed in the quizzes category; I don't consider something in which you can easily find the answer in one click without losing any points to be a quiz. Feel free to use one at any time, then use the "Return to Question --" item to answer whichever question you left.  Also, if a page's title takes the form Book Chapter:verse(s), the page is of direct scriptural quotation.

Well, in any case, enjoy this, and (on the off-chance that you are reading this about... well, 355 to 360 days after this is written, merry Christmas!

Test Your Knowledge: The Fellowship of the Ring

The first in a series of quizzes over Tolkien's classic novel, The Lord of the Rings, NOT Peter Jackson's film adaptation.  The first installment concerns the first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring.  IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, DO NOT TAKE THIS QUIZ--YOU WILL NOT SCORE WELL!!!!!!!  This quiz is for those who have, and it does not deserve unusually low ratings from people who cannot understand it!!!

Note that a "1" at the end of a score indicates that the player ended the game halfway through the quiz.

A "99" is proof that the player answered the bonus question (worth 199 points) correctly.  The rest of the questions are worth 100 points, with an optimal score (not counting the bonus question) being 2600.  Good luck, reader!

Test Your Knowledge: The Hobbit

After publishing my Fellowship of the Ring quiz, I realized I had not devised a Hobbit quiz. This one is both shorter and simpler than that quiz, for two reasons:

1.) The Hobbit is a shorter and simpler novel than The Fellowship of the Ring.

2.) This counts toward my Lore-masters standings, so I would not want to throw off the mechanics of that scoring system with a quiz as long as that one over a smaller subject matter. This is NOT to say that my The Two Towers quiz will also be this brief; in fact, I believe it will be longer.

Anyhow, this quiz is about J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, NOT the 1977 cartoon, NOT the Sierra Entertainment multi-platform game, NOT the adaptation by Charles Dixon and Sean Deming, and NOT any other derivative work!!!! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE HOBBIT, DO NOT TAKE THIS QUIZ, YOU WILL NOT SCORE WELL!!!!! You have been warned!

Well, I believe I've said all that is necessary! Good luck, reader!!

Allegiance

In the beginning, God created the heaven and earth and all things within them in six days, resting on the seventh.  Man he placed in the beautiful Garden of Eden, and for him he provided a help-meet in the form of a woman.  All too soon, however, the woman was beguiled by a serpent, and both Man and Woman were corrupted with the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  Being a just god, God could no longer fellowship with Man as he had before, and as a result of the first man's sin, death entered into the world.  But there was a single hope for the children of Man, in the form of a Savior who would come to earth and submit himself, a sacrifice to cover the sins of mankind.

But tragically, this Savior was rejected by his own people and it was but a small--small but loyal--following that carried His message to the remainder of the world.  Like a wildfire that could not be extinguished, this new faith spread, in spite of persecution and adversity, encompassing all corners of the world.  Congregations of believers in this Savior's salvation were called churches, and in due time, they could be found in any imaginable locale.  At the start of this "church-age" each church was wholly independent of every other, and though in their doctrines, some descrepancy could be found, even some corruption of belief, none had power over any other.  But this was soon to change....

The emperor Constantine of the Roman Empire was perhaps the first man of power to note that, no matter how these "Christians" were persecuted, their people and their faith only grew.  It was then that a grand vision allegedly struck this man--whether or not it was of God... perhaps He only knows.  Constantine was said to have seen a grand vision: a cross of fire in the air, accompanied by the words, "By this thou shalt conquer."  He called together a great number of churches, forming, as it were, a hierarchy, with organization including political and legislative authority, thus perpetuating the unholy union of church and state.

But not every church was a part of Constantine's new hierarchy, and throughout the ages that followed, these churches faced trial after trial at the hands of men who came in the name of the selfsame God--persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.  This is your life, for you are an ana-Baptist.  Can you survive in an age in which those who dare to defy the words of an earthly father in support of a Heavenly Father are cast out as blasphemers?  Can you keep the faith of your fathers in an age in which death at the stake--or worse--lingers at every corner?  Decide the fate of yourself and your congregation in this historical epic of the Dark Ages, coming eventually.

So much research, etc. to be done for this one!  I haven't abandoned it; I just haven't had the time for the research!

Wow.  It certainly feels... strange to be posting a message in the MAG forums again.  The past couple months, I haven't even been able to look at a computer screen without getting an awful headache.  But anyway, I wholeheartedly agree with basically everything said here so far.  I don't even read new fantasy stories any more unless a friend pressures me to.  The closest I've gotten to reading fantasy this summer would have to be...  The Once and Future King by T.H. White (a classic, but a little muddled with Mr. White's decidedly agnostic commentary on education, warfare, and religion), That HIdeous Strength by C.S. Lewis (which I imagine I will be mentioning elsewhere pretty soon), and Stardust by Neil Gaiman----I picked up a movie tie-in copy after seeing some previews and stuff, and I was actually impressed.  It takes me back to the classic world of pre-Tolkien fairy tales, that long-forgotten genre of...  Okay.  I perceive that, as always, I am rambling, so, alas, I end this forum post.

On what you were saying, madglee, Elfman was still in the credits for writing the theme for the movies (which was borrowed extensively in many of the new composers score pieces), but he did not write the score.  I don't seem to remember seeing his name next to Raimi's, but it's possible since Raimi owns the copyright to that piece of music.

Quotes for the day on 5/18/2007 5:04:41 PM
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." ----Paul, Galatians 5:16-26

who has a myspace? I'm just curious on 5/18/2007 4:53:49 PM

I've never joined a social network because I'm too paranoid about living a public life.  On MAG, my personality is essentially the same as in the real world, but when I talk to you guys, I'm Sir_Lancegalawain.  And Sir_Lancegalawain isn't officially affiliated with my academic life, etc.

Also I'm a bit disillusioned by all the terrible things that transpire on myspace and similar websites---fools giving away their personal information to strangers and the results of that---and all the general uncleanness, not to mention the idiots (and their are some these on every website, not just social networks, I know) who hate a person simply for existing.  Then, as Fleshnblood said, those "I have more 'friends' than you" types.  The point is this: I don't have a myspace.

I SAW SPIDERMAN 3!!!!!!!!!!!! on 5/10/2007 6:48:35 PM

It was a good movie, but I kind of have mixed feelings about some of the plot elements, etc.

If you have not yet seen the movie and do not want any spoilers, don't read any more of this until another bold-faced message says otherwise.  I would hate to spoil the movie for anyone, but I also would like to discuss the film with anyon who is interested in the same key points. Making Marko responsible for Ben Parker's death takes away from the themes, I think.  The entire reason Peter became Spider-Man was by obligation to Ben and society because he believed himself to be responsible for his uncle's death.  Power and responsibility.  Church's portrayal and delivery for the character (still referring to the Sandman) was good, however, and I love that they used the classic green striped shirt.  Also, Gwen seemed a little--just a little--mischaracterized, and I didn't enjoy the fact that Peter, in the movie, really only used her to make Mary Jane jealous.  In the comics, Gwen was his true love.  And the symbiote isn't really... symbiotic in the movie--I guess to go with the theme of  "fighting ones inner darkness" they decided that in the movie it one only amplify the host's aggression.  As someone said earlier, Venom was completely wasted in the movie (come on, filmmakers, why do always have to kill the villains?!).  Still, they didn't give Brock or Venom nearly enough screen time, and both of their personalities are very different from the comics--Venom, in the comics, was out to protect the innocent and punish whomever he thought was guilty.  Still, Topher Grace was pretty good as this new pompous, arrogant, insecure Brock/Venom.  But the New Goblin.  I suppose the filmmakers were trying to compromise between, you know, Harry as the Green Goblin and the Ultimate version in which he becomes the Hobgoblin, but Harry's alter ego was completely unprecedented, and I might have to see the film a second time before I can make a final judgment.  Did anyone else notice that the score was noticably worse?  Can you believe that Danny Elfman didn't write it?  I had never even heard of this Christopher Young fellow before this movie, but his music... just wasn't the same.  I guess I've kind of been a fan of Elfman since I saw the first Spider-Man movie, so maybe it's just some kind of emotional attachment I have. (If anyone's interested in the story behind the composer change--which I doubt anyone will be--here it is: http://www.moviehole.net/news/6250.htmlSpoilers end here.  I repeat, the spoilers are over.  I have finished writing spoilers in this forum post.

So anyway, the movie is definitely worth seeing for anyone reading this who has not.  If anyone wants to discuss this further (and/or argue with me) I'm more than ready to answer on this thread or via private message.

As to the question of which Spider-Man film is my favorite, I guess I'd have to say the first one.  The second is almost equally good, but the fact that everyone and his brother knows Spidey's identity by the end makes it a little worse.
