Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Has anyone read the series, "A song of fire and ice" by George R.R. Martin? If you did, what did you think of it? I just happen to be reviewing the fantasy fiction section of my library, and it brought back memories.

In case you forgot, the four books are: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Swords, A Storm of Swords, and A Feast for Crows.

Any other fantasy fictions you have read that are interesting? I may or may not have read them but I'll welcome the sharing of your experiences anyway.

Hmm, doesn't seem to be in my library. I'll get it this week and start reading immediately. I'll get back to you after. If anyone have other books, don't be afraid to share.

suzanne collins wrote the hunger games. I think that's better than Heir's.

Watching the series on HBO right now.

I didn't want to get into the books because he's been writing the series since 1996 and he's only got 4 out of 7 finished.

I got about an eighth of the way into the first book and gave up on it because there are so many made up words and places and characters. Like having heaps of characters can definitely be pulled off - Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns is the best book series I've ever read and he has tonnes of characters/protagonists - but I don't think this book lives up to the hype.

Also, I hate the entire Danaeryis (Danyaeris/Danyaraes/Danywhatever) storyline. I hear that in four books, she's never even met any of the other main characters. She seems mainly inserted as an excuse for sex scenes.

Most importantly- how can there be "No word for 'Thank You' in Dothraki?" Complete BS. Not a real culture, just a stereotyped barbarian horde.

And of course, from a hard sci-fantasy standpoint, if winter really lasted for three years, in a medieval society no less, everyone on the planet would starve to death.

I have to disagree with some things here.

I think ASoIaF is a great series. Wonderful. There's so much thought put into it, and they're a good length; these cultures are thoroughly thought out and are extremely interesting to learn about. The only quarrel I have is that so many people die, but that keeps it realistic and different from other series. My verdict on the series is 9/10, because of the thought, work and time put in, and the excellence that comes out.
