Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

First off, the prologue was completely unnecessary (I'm talking about his parents being gunned down, not his reaction to Superman's destruction from Man of Steel). Just as we've seen Spiderman's origin story time and time again, we've also seen Batman's. At this point, everyone knows his origin story. And the slow-mo wankery actually made it worse. It felt like the scene was shot because they wanted to show off some slow-mo effects instead of using the slow-mo effects to accentuate the scene (as it should've been).

Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and since actors have to play him in such a way that's essentially two different characters, I'll address each of them independently. As Batman, he was absolutely fantastic; easily the best on-screen Batman we've ever gotten. He's actually a detective, and he actually uses the Batcomputer. It's that facet of Batman that we've never seen in film before. The only thing that I'm concerned is that while he does kill people in the movie, I don't actually have a problem that in particular. I know people are outraged because of it, which is silly, because Keaton's Batman is beloved, and he definitely kills a few times (and IIRC, Bale did, too); it's not as pronounced as here, but it still happens. What bothers me, is that the explanation I most often hear for the Joker's grills is because of run ins with Batman, but if that's the case, why wouldn't he just kill him? If someone can answer that, that would be awesome. As far as I know, that's just speculation, right now, so there may be another reason entirely.

His Bruce Wayne, though, wasn't really that great in that the playboy aspect wasn't really all there. They tried it with Diana and him, which was fine, but other than that, there wasn't much going on there. Don't really blame them, though, they filled up their screen-time pretty much to the max.

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor... wasn't terrible, but he wasn't very good either. Really, he was barely even Lex. He was miscast. There is one exception to this, though: The scene on the helipad and his interactions there with Lois and Superman. It showed he was actually a threat, and how manipulative and cunning Lex can be. Take that scene, tone down the... Jesse Eisenberg-ness of it, make him bald, and up his intimidating factor a bit and you've got a pretty damn good Lex. Do those things, and not only would he have been in control, it would've felt like he was in control.

Even though Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman didn't have very much screen time, when she finally did show up in her costume (which itself is pretty rad), she was great. Single best moment is that leap at Doomsday. And speaking of Doomsday... there was no reason for him to even be there. Although, I did like that they had the balls to kill Superman (and of course, I know it's not permanent, but I wish they hadn't made that so obvious).

The first half of the movie tried (and I consider it to have failed) it it's dynamic in trying to explore the implications of security and even religion in the instance of a god-like alien among humans. The idea has a ton of potential for depth, but the movie didn't really touch on it enough, and definitely not to the extent they should have. What I would have done is cut out Batman's origin story (since everyone knows it by now) and as much fluff as possible in order to extend the court scene. It was way too short, by itself, it was only there because of Lex framing Supes. You could have kept that, but extended the scene and it probably would have been more impactful, especially if it wasn't so overtly hinted at what was going to happen. In general, the scene was just strange, with it being completely silent before the explosion happens. It almost reaches jumpscare levels of absurdity.

The second half is what lives up the the title of the movie. Batman and Superman engage in fisticuffs, and unsurprisingly the action is fantastic. I do like that Superman completely wipes the floor with Batman even after getting hit with a kryptonite bullet. Don't like that Batman basically won. Even though it's not really brilliant writing, I do like the reason they stop fighting: because both their mother's names are Martha. It's a bit silly now that I think of it, but I like it because I don't think I've ever realized that, until now.

Another scene that's silly for fans to get annoyed over is that one where Aqua Man, the Flash, and Cyborg get cameos. The reason I don't think this is all that bad is because they do it all at once, and it's almost over as quickly as it started. They show each of the cameo clips back to back and it moves on. It's setup bait for more movies, but I don't really blame them for doing that. They're already behind Marvel.

tl;dr: Everyone knows Batman's origin story. Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot were both great, Jesse Eisenberg was meh. Doomsday was shoehorned in. Great action and visuals.

Well, I think that's it, really. I'd be curious to see other people thoughts on the movie.

Action was great. Plot was shit. The whole "your mom is named Martha too?! let's be friends!" killed it for me. Doomsday was awesome. The prologue of Batman was very unnecessary. Glad they didn't do the same with superman because they very easily could've. I don't think it deserves that 30% RT score xD I think it deserves something closer to a 70%

My friend and I were smiling like idiots throughout most of the movie.

I agree with your tldr.

It doesn't even make sense. Aniki and Onii-chan both refer to older siblings, so are they both supposed to be each other's older brother?

Batman is a hulk compared to the last version of him. His figure is so wide whilst the other was tall and somewhat skinny.

Pros:

- Fight scenes were kinda cool

- Like the Tie-In with Man of Steel

- Godfall Superman Flashpoint Inception Dream Sequence

- Both moms were named Martha

- Good buildup, I guess

- Granny's Peach Tea! XD

Cons:

- Betrayed almost everything I knew about DC (Man of steel did that, too)

- Casting for Lex. Expected Vin Diesel or Jason Stathom or other white bald actor. Not Jesse

- Flash is Asian?

- Aquaman is Asian? (Don't quote me on these, but I thought I saw this in the late night darkness of the theater)

- General Zod and Lex Luthor had a baby Doomsday?

- Where the hell is Robin/Nightwing?

- Unnesscesary Batman Origin Dream Sequence.

- Set up for countless other movies

Verdict:

4/10

"Cons: Flash and Aquaman are Asian."

Okay, now for the lulz, want you to post this statement over at CoG.

Choice of Games, our more social justice oriented counter part.

The debate about Batman vs. Superman over there would be how no matter who wins, it still enforces the straight white male patriarchy.

But they were never Asian in the comics!

In fact, they were both blond, white males!

As long as it doesn't fuck up the characters, I'm fine with it. Just like I'm fine with Black spider-man. And blind Daredevil.

I mean... there's a legit black Spiderman (Miles Morales). I'd be down for it, as long as they use Morales character, instead of just making him a black Peter Parker.

I just wish that there was more Wonder Woman and Aquaman in it, although maybe they'll be in Civil War (although I doubt it).

Aren't all comics in the same universe? Doesn't the Flash get his head beaten in during All Out War?

Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

No? There's been crossovers (speaking of, a crossover between the DC and Marvel cinematic universes would be rad as hell; even if it'll never happen), but they're different universes, AFAIK.

'Twas feckin' ridiculous. It spent too long setting up sequels to even make a proper plot. They were so busy trying to justify the battle that they couldn't even find a proper reason for them to team up, or even develop a villain properly. Hell, the whole internet was nothing but Ledger Joker and Bane impersonations for almost half a year after their respective movies, they could've hired someone good enough at imitating them (Or just brought back Bane, because he's not dead) in order to half Lex and Joker team up against them. (And then inevitably fight each other too.) I know it's cliche, and it's probably been done nearly every time Bats and Supes ran into some gravel in their bromance, but "Hey, our villains are both trying to kill us, let's turn them against each other." is still better than "Hey, I learned how to animate a LOTR troll in CGI. I know it looks like a turd with limbs, but let's add like one or two skin-rocks and pretend it's doomsday, because we need a super-villain!" Then again, since Mark Zuckerberg was trying so hard to be the joker anyway, I guess it would just become a repettitive Ham competition.

If there is a plus, it's that Aquaman is Khal Drogo.

It starts out almost as some kind of political thriller. Then changes to an action thriller halfway through the movie. In other words: This movie was a mess. I still enjoyed it though.

My question is whether things would have really played out any differently if Batman stabbed Supes in the face with the kryptonite spear. Batman and Wonder Woman could've taken Doomsday by themselves. The only thing that would've been lost is Superman's chance at popular redemption.

This is me going through:

What? Why the hell is he being carried by bats?

Okay, okay we all get that his parents died.

Mmmkay, but why does only she get super sex?

Fight 'em batty!

Why the fuck is that dream in the movie? Bug people? Could this be an Easter egg for another money grab? surprise

Haha, piss.

Isn't that that one guy from that movie.......?

Hey, that's that one special effects from Star Wars.

Wtf why does it matter that both of their parents name is Martha?

Okay.........but why does Aquaman look like Gangas Kan?

What the fuck......?

Oh my God, World of Warcraft meets DC! *On appearence of doomsday*

Beat that Orc, superman!

Why the heck do they have the nuke scene?

Okay, that was sad. I still don't believe this. I still don't.

Que the ending.

Genghis Khan, dammit! That's, like, basic gradeschool shit, man! And also, Ghengis wasn't Hawaiian, tattooed, or dreadlocked. Fuck, Ghengis was probably biologically incapable of growing a full beard! How the fuck does he even look remotely like Genghis? Who was your history teacher? Cheech Marin? Goddammit, dude! What the fuck!? What the actual fuck!? There are not words for how unfortunate this is!

I know a fellow, who was happily drinking vodka, stating he was talking in a russian accent (as opposed to the undignified slurring other people would call it) and didn't know who the fuck Stalin was.

We were playing cards against humanity, and he was simultaneously the most hilarious person there, and the most awful. So, winner at CAH. Loser at everything else.

Meh.

Batman and Superman are supposed to be contrasts to each other. Snyder already screwed up in Man of Steel by deciding Superman needed to be all dark and gritty too. Not too happy with how either character was handled, and remembering that this is all supposed to set up a franchise, I'm not sure if I care to see a grim and joyless Justice League who are totally down with murder and answerable to no one.

What they tried to do at the end was fairly pointless too. Not much impact when the characters don't have the years and history together they do in the comic books, and the audience all knows better.

Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

I wouldn't mind if, in the proper Justice League movie, Superman becomes more aligned to the comics. Also, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to watch the Wonder Woman standalone movie. Besides Batfleck, she's easily the best part.

Well, for me, it's because in the comics (that I know of) Wonder Woman isn't a high-life bachelorette, she's an Amazonian warrior, raised on an island.

Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

In most cases, she's an Amazon, but it depends on which era. Her original identity has been reworked multiple times, there was a period in the sixties where she was pretty much just James Bond in a short skirt. I don't particularly mind because I really haven't had that great of an idea as to what her history really was after that.

Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

Her main problem is she doesn’t have a particularly interesting rogues gallery. Heroes are only as good as their villains which is why Batman is DC's most popular hero.

Also what what to the batman rule where he is non lethal, that duded killed so many people in the film .

Thoughts on Batman v. Superman (Spoilers)

Meh, Batman used to kill all the time before the comic book code started censoring shit. Then he started killing again occasionally depending on whoever the writer was when the comic book code started becoming obsolete.
