Are there any good horror games on the site?  I would prefer one without pictures, but it would be alright if it did.

What do you count as a horror game?

Secret of Daphne, A Game of Life and Death, The Free Hand, Dead Man Walking

Oops!  I should clarify more.  For horror game, I mean like an actual horror game, like one which is based on survival, and you can't really fight back.

So, not "Dead Man Walking" and "The Free Hand."  I've played the "Secret of Daphne," and I know Kiel Farren made "A Game of Life and Death."

"An actual horror game?"  So you mean a survival horror game?

(I just object to "based on survival and you can't really fight back" as the only "real" meaning of horror game.)

For whatever reason, there don't seem to be many text-based games like that.  Or at least, many good text based games like that.  I think it's a fairly visual genre, for one thing.  For another, the time limit aspect is generally part of the suspense.

You say that, but notice how a lot of adventure game protagonists are slightly below-average skinny guys with the craftiness of Greek mythological heroes, who usually have to fight deadly enemies by solving absurd puzzles or performing great acts of fast-talking trickery. Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't MORE CYOAs where you can't fight back.

I always liked Infocom's The Lurking Horror for the text horror genre thought it's parser based rather than choice based.

What's the parser one where you're a woman in a lovecrafty town?

To be a horror game, a story need only follow this definition (according to Webster): "calculated to inspire feelings of dread or horror." And what is horror?

Don't worry, because I didn't specifically state your game as a non-horror.  I had just simply played it already, and am looking for a different type of game...

I meant when you defined 'actual horror' as a game where you don't fight back, because you can in parts of my game. Not against everything, of course. I mean, there is no way to defeat the doppleganger/face-stealer, there is no way to defeat the shape-shifter spirit, there is no way to defeat the monster in the spirit forest, exc... but you still get to fight. But yeah, I understand, you want a game that's more focused on 'just get out alive.'
