Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

Well, when I first started rating stories I was a kind old soul. Remembering my teaching years, I'd rate on content and creativity, ignoring glaring spelling and grammatical errors. That time is officially over. Now it's time to get dead serious. The whole package must exist. There better be a good, original story with nearly immaculate grammar and spelling, and then someone will get a 7. A little something extra to it? 8. My first story only took me about twenty minutes to write, but I'd have to say that if it's a 3 or 4 or whatever it is, then a lot of these stories are getting 1's from now on. I realize my story is noticeably a twenty minute thing - not saying mine is deserving of a 7 or 8 - it's not. But I'll fix it once I'm finished with my new story. And after all, when "grading" or "rating," or whatever semantic one chooses, what is such a concept except doing so comparatively? That's the only way. So while I don't particularly compare them to my story, I will certainly compare them to my favorite stories on the site, and they'll get their just desserts.

Rate on, green lantern.

Probably a good idea. Tired of wading through excrement to find some gems.

Storygames

I used to be tight on spelling but I don't mind it now. Probably the opposite, I s'pose.

Storygames

Hrm, I suppose my above post could look like the ravings of a lunatic. I did put "glaring" spelling errors. When talking about 1's, I was talking about the stories that look like this: (this is not  a real story from the site)

Page 1

and so u run threw the cave and see a man he tells u he meens well do you trust him or do u kill ihm?

Storygames

I can understand you being pissed off at that.

"and so u run threw the cave and see a man he tells u he meens well do you trust him or do u kill ihm?"

This sounds a little harsh. I apologize if I was too abrasive. Maybe I have been writing and rating too much. Heheheeh.

Storygames

Rating 50% of the stories in the time you did is a mean feet.  but i disagree with needing a nearly perfect story in every way to get an 8.

Are we proffesional authors?  If we were i could see those requirements.

Seems about right, except for what JJJ said. If you want a good game, try unpublishing it whenever you think of something new like an added feature or something or fix spelling mistakes. Of course, if you don't want to have everyone lose there votes, don't unpublish. Lucky I, I know how to edit w/o unpublishing. Ask me if you want to know.

Storygames

I'd like to know, please.

Storygames

shit havvy, giving away the sites inner workings.

Storygames

Ah, HA! So you knew and didn't help me, triple J?! Are the scorpions stuck to your face yet, dammit?

Storygames

I've contributed enough to know.

"What, you want the truth, Marge? You want the truth?!"

"The whole system's out of whack. You can't handle the truth!"

*Cough*

Pardon me, pay not attention to the above.

Storygames

Ha! Pay "not." Perfect for this thread.

I actually tried the method with PMs.  It didn't work.  It's still a nice loophole.

Storygames

Interesting...

Hey, did you know that 1000 monkeys on lysergic acid diethylamide can write Shakespeare in an unforetold amount of years? Thought you guys might be wondering.

Storygames

Impossible.  The chances are a 1 in infinity.

Storygames

I use google to correct my spellings (because I don't have a spelling checker that will work with mozilla, grrr!) If there is going to be a spelling error I don't want it to be so bad, (I also normaly proofread the parts of the story I wrote, so I can look for bad mistakes.). I don't like really bad grammar or spelling either, but I try to over look it on some games, like Star Wars A New Galaxy.

Storygames

I bet there's an addon for it.

Storygames

Probably. (mozilla and their freakin' addons.)

Storygames

I thought i did a pretty good job grammar/spelling wise on that game. sure a few mistakes but

Storygames

I have not writen a story yet, But I will warn you now, I am SHOKING with spelling and gramma.
It is probably a good thing I have no time to write one at the moment.

Storygames

haha i see.

shoking...

Storygames

Yep.. according to Paul (hiddendragon), you only need spelling and grammar until Year Twelve.

Storygames

LOL... Hmmm did I say that... It's not a case of you dont need it... anyone wanting to do any sort of writing will need it... my point was that in Australia, your spelling and gramma (at least in 2003 when I was there) on your exam only counts for 3% of the mark... if you want a 99.9 it matters. if your happy in the early 90's or 80's it does not. and at uni, well so far they have rarely ever corected or marked me down for any spelling.. and I'm... well... I'm no speller, or gramma!

Storygames

Well, I agree with all this. I used to teach sophomore and senior english and creative writing, respectively. I would constantly tell the class that ideas, and their crafting were far more important than spelling. And it's true. Thinking that spelling is important makes many students not want to try writing stories. However, with all the spell checking utilities available (for instance someone could type a page in word, spell check it, then just cut and paste into the web site), people editing your work for you, horrible spelling is a problem.

I'm certainly not talking about triple J's Star Wars - I thought that was great - I'm talking about "glaring" spelling errors like in the above example. I'm talking about so many spelling errors that nearly anyone reading it is like, "Did this person even check his own work?" Same with grammar. All the stuff I was talking about is the "glaring" stuff that is so apparent, it just should have been checked by someone before being published.

I agree, I have just finished.. well I am in the middle of editing, a script for a play, that a local theatre company is putting on, and I cant spell. Infact I am mildly dislexic (or however you spell it) and a slow learner, If i can write a story, anyone can! the ideas and imagination are what make a story great! spelling and gramma just make it easyer to pass on the idea...

On that note did you know Tom Cruis is Dislexic, he cant even read, and yet he has to remember lines! anything is possible this day in age!

Storygames

K i agree with that.

Storygames

I must say, Eminem kicks ass.

Storygames

Hmm.. I'll check the comments on the "insult eminem" game. I'm sure I'll see hatred towards it from somebody.

Storygames

I think so.

Storygames

Oh, dear God.

Storygames

Eminem= yuck.

You can't have CRAP without RAP.

Storygames

Weedy = yuck.

Cant haev retarted stoners without weed.

Storygames

Ha! I love that. Can't have crap without rap. I'll have to use that.

Storygames

JJJ- thebanisher=yuck.

Can't have JJJ-thebanisher without ISH.

Sorry, but that was the best comeback I could think of.

Storygames

I strongly encourange deductions for spelling/grammar. When you're getting into someone's writing and finally getting a clear image of the picture they are trying to paint, a misspelling or grammatical error really throws it off the mood. It'd be like watching a high-quality movie and then seeing the boom mike swing down in view.

Good writing takes time and needs to be proofread.

Storygames

I agree.. sadly.

Storygames

Yeah, Mattias has a lol-puff in it somewhere.

Storygames

I agree with that too. I'm a shocking speller, but nothing that spell check cant neaten up at least a bit!

Storygames

I spotted two badly spelt words together in those sentences: cant and neaten.

Actually, you may have neaten right, I'm not sure how to spell it myself.

Storygames

is neaten a word?

Storygames

Probably Australian slang.
Spell check cant come up with sugestions for some of the words I make up!

Storygames

HAHAHAHHAH nice dude nice,

Storygames

You know, I'm going to go and neaten up something. Come to think of it, it does look right.

Storygames

lol... it does, I agree.    -(that was so much like a JJJ post. the I agree part)

Storygames

Yes.  umm....
I moved the rappers out of this post.

Storygames

They're still there though.

Storygames

Well, the game posts yah, but the actual part on rappers is out.  (the books part)

Storygames

I didn't see anything about books at all though. Are you sure it was there?
