Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

So I was looking at the featured games and noticed something. The only game I have made so far is in the fantasy section, its got some good ratings and is settling at about a score of 6 which I am fairly happy with for a first game.

However in the fantasy section if you write a game that gets scored as a solid 7 its still very unlikely to be featured since Fantasy has so many of the sites best games in it that will (rightly so) block anything but a truly amazing game from being featured there. However in some other less populated sections like school life and modern adventure it seems that lower scored games could easily get featured since some don't even have a full compliment of games featured atm.

So who thinks making a push or holding a competition for people to write somthing for these sections would be a good idea?

I do not think having lots of new rushed games for some sections would be a good idea. It is better if we let people choose what kind of games they make, at their own pace.

OR we can make ten spots in fantasy.

Or we should try to throw in some newer good games in the featured list.

Since Endmaster basically has a monopoly on features.

You can't blame him for making great stories.

I feel Magus Betrayal should be unfeatured, but its Madglee's favorite, Ive heard.

I don't really find Magus good enough to be featured, but I don't remember any story that would be good enough to replace it.

Dungeon Stompage

Correction: I don't remember any, but I haven't read any storygames in a few weeks. If that's new than maybe, if not then it's not memorable to me.

I concur, that one really deserves a feature

Getting featured by changing genre

Well, I would disagree. It surpasses nearly every story in creativity and structure. What about it do you not find "good enough?" Submit your argument.

It's writing is good, but the story itself is too short, unfulfilling, and incomplete (Only to be expected considering it's only part of a never to be finished series)

It makes up for it with great replay value, but even that has it's limits (To be specific, five replays, maybe up to 6).

There are likely better stories, such as dungeon stompage (Though its buggy enough that it probably shouldn't be featured, and doesn't have equal replay value) and I assume others (My opinion is only worth so much when I haven't played all of the games in the fantasy section).

I wouldn't exactly say it's the most creative story, it's really almost stereotypical, but I will admit to it's unique structure, i've yet to see another storygame do anything like that on this site.

Magus is one of the best stories on the site. I'm surprised you don't see this. Look at the writing, it's incredible.

Getting featured by changing genre

Horrible idea. The reason they are featured is because they're the best stories. It encourages others to write better and spend more time developing their own ideas if they want their own story to be featured.

Getting featured by changing genre

Then people will just write a school story..its much easier too get featured there.

Getting featured by changing genre

If your only goal is to get featured, then yeah. We shouldn't make it easier for games to be featured because the existing ones are too good. They help grab a new member's attention to the site, and to purposely replace them with worse stories wouldn't be good for the site.

For me IMO it feels like the opposite, it's like reaching for a cookie that's on a skyscraper while you're just a eight year old kid. Really, it's near impossible for any new person to beat Endmaster at his own game.

I'm not hatin' on Endmaster, I'm just stating my dissatisfaction about how features are handled.

Getting featured by changing genre

So? If a story is supposed to be featured, it's because it's the best. Writing a featured story shouldn't be easy, you have to work for it.

Getting featured by changing genre

I agree absolutely with what you say, but expecting someone to surpass someone else who clearly has fountain of experience and knowledge among the readers, is in my opinion a bit too tough, Having a story featured should be tough, but not nigh-impossible.

Getting featured by changing genre

The point of featuring is highlighting the BEST stories. It doesn't matter if the best stories were written years ago, they're the best stories. To be featured, your stories have to be better than the current best. If you can't do that, you shouldn't be featured.

Getting featured by changing genre

Okay. You've proven your point here.

Getting featured by changing genre

Its too hard, and much harder than the other categories. We have to make the bar same in all categories. I agree it should be hard, but its too hard and much harder than other categories.

subtle repeat. Ok, maybe not so subtle.

Getting a game featured is not a competition. It's the result of writing very good stories with a few of them being able to stick out from the rest. Naturally the genre with the most games is going to be the hardest to get featured in, because so many great stories have been written. If you're own game isn't good enough to replace one of those, it shouldn't be featured.

The bar for a featured game is only where the authors set it.

Atleast you should get some points...

Getting featured by changing genre

Hmm... What if we also had some other form of official recognition for great games in addition to the current featuring?

For Example (just throwing this out without any real though about the impact) ---

Reader's Choice

Have the system affix a Silver Star to the top 5 Rated (non-featured) Stories in each Category. This should be based on the Median (not average) Rating by number of times it has been rated by Members only.

Getting featured by changing genre

Great idea, but along with the star points should be given.

Getting featured by changing genre

Yes, definitely   ^-^

Getting featured by changing genre

That sounds like a good one.

Getting featured by changing genre

I think Endmaster will STILL flood that category. haha.

Getting featured by changing genre

What about making highest rated non featured stories?

Getting featured by changing genre

I like Berka's idea of a Reader's choice. My only question is why does it have to be members only?

Getting featured by changing genre

It makes it harder for people to rate their game high to get the star.

Getting featured by changing genre

I see. Good point.

Getting featured by changing genre

Because a lot of the 13 year olds make accounts just to rate stories, driving the score down or up at their whim.

Getting featured by changing genre

I say they should just take all of my stories out of all the other categories completely and make a section just for me and place my top five stories in it.

It's win/win!

Getting featured by changing genre

We could call it the hall of shame.

Good idea!

Getting featured by changing genre

I imagine earning your own Category would be worth a buku bunch O' XPs!   ^-^

Getting featured by changing genre

That's because it's less frequent to see a highly-rated School Life or Modern Adventure game. They have less appeal to writers. They might be harder to write. Not all categories are created equal. Therefore, if you wrote one, it would probably be lower rated than a Fantasy game if you are better at writing Fantasy games. Pushing or forcing stories that qualify for less popular categories without you being inspired to write that type of story would just result in forced and lower quality stories, which might not make the cutoff standard either in the end, and you just wasted all that time writing stories you don't like and still didn't get featured.

Getting featured by changing genre

I remember that we had a discusion with a moderator on this very same topic a while back. While the truth is that it's nearly impossible to get featured in the current system (if you're writing in Sci Fi or Fantasy especially), once we move to the new layout, the systems set in place will be swapped.

We won't be using categories anymore, only tags, so from what I gather, it won't be the best of each category, but perhaps the best of the best games  (decided by the moderators).

Getting featured by changing genre

So why isnt the system "best in category tag "?

Getting featured by changing genre

Since each story will likely have multiple tags on it. As in, some fantasy stories will have Modern Adventure + fantasy, some horror will have Fanatsy + horror, the amount of combinations is infinite. (not really, but a lot)

Anyone can upset a featured game by writing something incredible. BerkaZerka or Endmaster are good examples of writers who have surpassed the current storygames and achieved recognition. As far as your idea goes, that is not going to happen.

However, write something incredible, and it may be featured.

There will also be contests (one in the near future) which will assure a feature, should you win. And a Kindle will be involved.
