I need an over-arcing storyline. Something basic, reusable, and interesting. Something I can come back to throughout the story and still be relevant.

I thought of something like "treasure hunt" type - like finding a mystical gem to end the game, but it seems a bit ~ off... Anyone got ideas? The story is random based, I need something to glue all the pieces together though, which gives me trouble.
