"With a score of..."

Is there any way to suppress that message when people leave comments? I notice that it shows up when people comment, even when I don't use that variable at all!

Since the score is ubiquitous to every story containing variables, I'm guessing the only way not to have that message show up is not to use variables.

If you don't use the SCORE variable, there's always a useful place for it: Assign score numbers to the endgame links, so you can tell which ending the commenters got. Always figured that'd be a cool thing to do.

This is very clever. ^_^

I'm still sorry that I didn't use SCORE for 'number of demons killed,' in Hunter. Just because some people have reported killing absurd numbers of demons, given that I do not believe the 'gameplay' of Hunter is actually fun. And I feel like they ought to at least have gotten credit for it, in their comments. Although that might have encouraged even more killing of demons. :P

I do think SCORE should not be mandatory or automatically displayed, in an ideal world. I realize there's a time-honored tradition of having a score, in interactive fiction, but I don't think it makes much sense, for most choice-based games.

First, you take a live chicken and a stone altar...

Ok, I have the chicken...

Like I said, number the endings. It has a practical use that way.

I suppose. I just want to get rid of it completely if I'm not using it. And if I am using it, what if I don't want to display it?

DAMMIT! I was in the middle of editting in the next step for the chicken ritual!

Well, everyone always wants to measure their score up against everyone elses, so if it ever is used, they're going to want to have it displayed. If you don't use the score, then you can just mock everyone for having lost your game and getting zeroes. (And secretly comment on your story pre-publishing with a score of 9000 just to really boil 'em!)

I think next story I write that doesn't use it, I'll add a random number generator with random numbers from something like 1 to 100,000 and put that in score, just for my own entertainment...

I believe the answer to this question is: Tough luck.

This is currently the answer to any problem on CYS that would require the intervention of its programmer to solve, with the occasional exception of bugs.

This is a situation that could change, if AlexP takes an interest in the site again in the future. But until then, your choices are to work within CYS's limitations, or use one of the other available means of creating choice-based interactive fiction.

Yeah, that's why I was wondering if there was some trick that I could use now to hide it, or some switch to turn it off that I was missing. No big deal, thanks for replying!

SCORE always shows with advanced editor stories, but does not on basic editor stories.
