Rating Improvement?

I heard this suggested a long time ago, and I wasn't sure about it, but given that we're really already in need of an automated system to purge shit stories, perhaps we should give it another look. I think it went something like this, the following ratings all had to be held consistently for a week or two, and several site members must have rated it already.

Rating of an 8: much congratulations, and all the benefits it already brings.

Rating of a 7: some congrats, any rewards deemed necessary.

Rating of a 6: Story is kept published an additional 2 points are given

Rating of a 5: story remains published extra 1 point is given

Rating of a 4: Story remains published. No benefits

3 and below: Deletion and point penalties.

I'm starting to think there will never be anymore stories with an 8. The most reasont one was Killa's one, which I heard got 5 3's in 1 night. Here's what I think should happen with the ratings and stuff:
  1. story unpublished, author fined 10 points
  2. story unpublished, author fined 5 points
  3. Story unpublished, author fined 3 points
  4. Story kept published, author given 0 points
  5. story kept published, author given 3 points
  6. story kept published, author given 5 points
  7. story kept published, author given 10 points
  8. Story kpt published, author given 20 points

I agree mostly with that chart, but with modifications from 5 - 8 such as:

5. Story kept published, author given 1 points
6. Story kept published, author given 3 points
7. Story kept published, author given 5 points
8. Story kept published, author given 10 points

--

What happens if a story is rated 8, and then goes to a 7 over time? does the author get the initial 10 points, then 5 points? What if the rating changes between 7 and 8 over time? Does the author have a point-generator now? Just gaining 10 points in 2 weeks, then 5 points in 2 weeks, then 10 and so on probably wouldn't be a good idea.

The problem is the timer itself as well, new people will come to the "Newly created stories" section and see all the stories, but not know how good they are because the ratings won't be updated until weeks after the story is made. So should we sacrifice faster results over accuracy?

Another problem is trolls, if a certain amount of trolls rate the game a 1/8, the rating will never be able to go to an 8/8 through percentage, even if it's an 8/8 game. So the game may be stuck at 7/8 - if so the author has gained 5 points, when s/he should've gained 10. Not that points really do anything at the moment, but some people can be very proud of the points they have gotten and deserved; and if they think (along with others) that their story deserves to get them 10 points, then we have a problem that will sooner than later be addressed.

Another troll problem is if 1 troll has many accounts rating his/her game an 8/8, even though the game is a 1/8. The troll may be able to balance it out so the game is a 4 - 5 / 8, which would keep it published and not deleted with no penalties; possibly benefits.

Also, should the point reward for publishing be taken away if the points are given through ratings? When a user publishes their first game, they gain 10 points and publishing from then on gains them 5 points per story game. (or so I've seen, I haven't really tested it or been told by an official source) -- so should that initial gain of points be taken away? If it isn't, then ratings 3 and below must have a higher penalty for point reduction to cancel out the initial publish gain.

If a story is rated 8, but then goes back to 7, they keep their honors because they managed to make something good enough to be an 8 for a week, the same way everyone who's been in my 4th grade class hates Island of the Blue Dolphins, but it still has a newberry honor.

They can still see the ratings, the rating itself just depends on the reward or penalties. Unless the only conceivable way to script this is not to display the current average, that is.

Yeah, the trolls will always be problems, and they are often addressed sooner than later, but notice how ratings reset once a person has un-published and then re-published a story. While the point ordeal would be a problem, a person must simply contact the nearest moderator and point out any injustices, as with all troll problems. There could also be a waiting period for points as well, which might help root out cheating duelists too, but that would be a SHIT TON of work, much less so if we held community votes among the populace, though. But that could easily go wrong without a lot of applied thought.

And yes, the point penalties displayed represent the total point loss, regardless of the initial reward.

Get bad ratings/make bad stories = deleted.

make moderate-good stories = points.

Since they keep the +10 points for having an 8/8 game for a week, when the game goes from it's current 8/8 to a 7/8, do they gain +5 points because their game is now 7/8? (So in total they have gained 15 points)

Rating Improvement?

Not unless they unpublish it and reset the rating, in which case they'd probably get their points docked anyway.

Rating Improvement?

No, only games that are consistently ones deserve a penalty. (IMO)

Yeah, I think if people are going to rate a game a 3, they acknowledge that at least the writer put a bit of effort into it. Really it's just the troll games I want to see go, not games that were probably a first attempt from a young person that just don't happen to be very good.

This idea seems unfair, especially concerning the part about unpublishing.

If the game recieves bad ratings, can't the person take it down himself?

What if trolls give them bad ratings?

What if he publishes it by accident?

Rating Improvement?

What if only 1 people rate it? A stupid person rated MyVacation 1 once.

Rating Improvement?

Like I said above, SEVERAL SITE MEMBERS have to rate it, and it has to hold the overall rating for a week or so.

Also note that a single rating of 1 does not actually bring a storygame's whole rating down to 1.

Rating Improvement?

It's not unfair at ALL we have far too many bad stories on this site, shitty warrior cats stories, shitty troll stories, all manner of terrible shit that we SHOULD NOT ALLOW TO REPRESENT THE SITE.

If someone publishes it by accident, they can unpublish it just fine, unless they are suddenly and irrevokably crippled immediately after. If trolls give them bad ratings, you can appeal to the mods about it.

And trolls, sucky writers, and die-hard warrior cats fans have their heads far too high up their own bumholes to take down their own stories even if they are awful.

That's it. You are a rude little person. I am reporting you to the admin.

You...

Tattle tale! cheeky

You...

What do you mean?

I actually did do it. Period.

You...

They know full well that I'm a rude person. Just because this is a public site doesn't mean the guy saying 'shit' and 'fuck' in his posts gets banned. Not everyone on an internet forum has to be an innocent 6 year old. You'd do well to learn that before you accidentally stumble on 4chan. Why, you'd be reporting people left and right. You might just have a stroke.

You...

I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER do that. You are a rude person who deserves to be put off the face of this website.

And now I have another reason for you to be blocked.

You... Have been very well sheltered...

Look, all I've done is cuss, I have not personally insulted you, I simply passionately argued my beliefs. If I've offended you with my sarcasms then I apologize. I've made a resolution a long time ago that I'd only pick on the strong, people who can take it. If I've been mistaken, then I guess I'll promise never to swear at you again.

But seriously, some odd indirect rudeness on a thread that has little to nothing to do with personal interaction alone is not something that warrants banning. I mean, have you even seen Drakoblare's fandoms thread? It got deleted, I think.

Fine.

I'll let you off this time. But if it happens again, don't expect me to be so generous.

Everyone is created equal.

Fine.

It still isn't against the rules to swear whilst arguing a point.

But I don't know what equality has to do with that...

Fine.

The admins aren't going to go out of their way to do anything if someone swares a few times. And this site doesn't have banning.

Fine.

1) Yes it does, they can delete you account and/or change you password

2) If you have been on the site for at least a year, and people don't hate you, the're pretty much not going ban you unless you post porn on the forums

Fine.

Rating Improvement?

It's a good idea, but I don't think it should be used. I agree with what you said, but there are some games like quizzes that are rated low simply because someone doesn't like the topic. Sure, even some of them deserve to be deleted, but for most quizzes, outright games etc. the rating seems like a matter of opinion to me.

Rating Improvement?

The rating is always a matter of opinion. It's also against guidelines to rate something poorly because you don't like the subject.

Rating Improvement?

I don't know about the whole getting points added or stories deleted based on ratings thing, but I just think it'd be better to have different descriptions for rating in general. I've heard 3J say several times that people on the site rate games too generously, and I'd say that have something to do with how the ratings are described.

For instance, a 4 is the middle rating, so that'd mean the game's average. It should really be given to games that were decent, that the reader acknowledges had a fair amount of work put into them, but nothing really made the game stand out as "above average" However, the rating is described as "slightly more fun than homework," which to me seems like an insult, so for games that strike me as average, I end up giving them a 5 rating instead of a 4.

I think if the descriptions of the ratings were changed, it might help people to get a better idea of what game deserves what rating, especially since people all seem to have a different opinion of what warrants an 8.

Rating Improvement?

I think the ratings shouldn't have descriptions, instead they should be color-coded. The descriptive ratings can be misunderstood as you've just said.

So maybe 1 is black, 2 is a red, 3 is orange, 4 is yellow, 5 is light blue, 6 is blue, 7 is light green, and 8 is green. That way people can rate by color, instead of the descriptions. I was thinking about color-blind people too, and technically the spot which shows the rating is very small - so it shouldn't bother a color-blind person, but it's just a guess. :s

Rating Improvement?

I... Honestly don't understand how color coding it would help. The point of the rating descriptions is so that people understand what the different ratings mean, 8 being the best of the best and 1 being absolutely terrible. Colors aren't really going to help people understand that better.

I suggested a less stringent version of this one month ago; it was rejected.
