Not sure if this has been brought up before but what if you guys made it possible to friend people? I mean I know people that use websites just for friends and stuff. I think it might make the site more popular. I know its not a social site but I am just saying.

I don't think the option to friend people will attract throngs of newcomers. What makes you think that a feature like this would make the site more popular?

Friends?

I mean I have friends that use facebook for two things. 1. Farmville. 2. To see how many friends they can get.

Friends?

Yeah but this is a writing site with fifteen active members.

Friends?

Maybe 20.

Friends?

True. But when people look at a site before joining and at the moment we have 19 guests. They might or might not like the idea. And we are a little more than just a writing site.

Getting more active members would definately be cool, but we don't want to attract them for the wrong reasons. I mean, think about it, if this site becomes like a social network, we will be getting the social network members, not the writing members. Would like a good number of quality stories, or just a whole lot of average to mediocre stories?

Plus, the current community is small enough for everyone to know the basics of what memberA thinks of memberB, so we wouldn't actually need a friend feature for people you've never met before.

Would you like*

Friends?

Well some people on this site do know each other and I wasn't suggesting adding a like button, games, and something where you could post and comment on someones profile. I don't want it to be a social networking site I just want the place to be better knowing and more attractive to other users.

Friends?

Lol "I don't want it to be a networking site, I just want it to be like a networking site."

Friends?

No just one little fix. I am not talking about groups and all that other stuff.

Bo is 100% right and his paraphrasing of your argument is right up my alley for humor. I laughed. Honestly though, you've asserted one thing:

1. It would attract new members.

I just don't see how that would happen, would you please explain? I know that when I'm browsing the internet, I don't join sites based on whether or not I can 'add friends' to my profile. Do you do that? Do we want to attract members who do that? (Bo's point, but I agree)

Friends?

Hmm, I guess I did rip a page out of the 3J book.

Friends?

It would take to long to explain ever bit of reasoning. Forget I meantioned it.

Friends?

Hahahha, yeah I do that a lot!

This conversation reminded me of this: xkcd: Google+

Friends?

I mean its like that conversation we had in that robin hood morality thread. It goes on and on when we say the same things.

Friends?

Lol it barely went on at all.

Is this idea rejected?

Friends?

Probably because I don't feel like keeping this can of worms open

Friends?

Nah, I'll let Alex do that. I reject the ones that are blatantly going to be refused (disabling the back button) and although social networking features litter the refused list, I'll leave this just to be sure.

Dogbox, stop being so pompous. Either stop whining and say what you have to say or stop mentioning that you have more to say and that you 'just don't feel like it'. It's annoying.

Friends?

Naw delete it. It's fine. You guys didn't like the idea so if by some miracle it actually happens I don't want it to be my fault.

Friends?

It's annoying? I am just saying I am not going to defend it anymore because you guys clearly don't like the idea.

Friends?

Well, convince us then.

Friends?

No, what you were saying is that you weren't going to defend it because even though you're either right or at least have really good grounds to stand on, we can't be convinced and you don't have the patience to try. What you're insinuating is that we're too stubborn to be talked with.

It's a little condescending is all, since I feel like you made unsubstantiated claims and then basically threw up your hands claiming silent superiority. Not a huge deal or anything though.

Friends?

I am not superior in no way to you guys its just that I can't really find anything strong enough that would change your mind.

Friends?

Anyway*

Friends?

Lol, I've been there before, congrats on the double negative btw, I'm now insulted.

Back on the topic, I don't think it would be a good idea. Aside from the vague explaination for how it would attract recurring visitors, social networks also have a way of isolating the population into peer groups, another way of rephrasing it, High School. I don't want CYOA to end up with one section goths, one nerds, and one one jocks. Why this would be a problem? Story ratings. If you have enough friends, everyone will be voting for you not because your story is good or has quality, but only because you're popular, which in this case will probably be JJJ. ;p

Secondly, this is a story game site, not a social networking webpage. If intermingling story games and social networking was so instrumental to success, the most popular thing on facebook would be your friends and story games. However, it isn't because they don't mix. It is like cross breeding a male horse and a mouse, and not in the test tube way.

Third, it may begin with a friend list, but before you know it, there will be a forum ignore list or however it would be implemented. There will be group trash talks, and petitions to take someone's story off the site just because your group doesn't like him/her.

Fourth, I would like to think this is a midly professional site made for people who have hobbies or writing careers, not high school. Ganging up and forming a country only invites prejudice, not harmony.

Friends?

That one really stung. *Rolls Eyes*

To play devils advocate, pretty much all standardized forums (including high level physics / math / medicine and writing sites) have friends lists.

Friends?

Hmm, I largly agree with Erudite.

Friends?

I think most forums that have a "friends" thing is more to subscribe to their stories, posts, etc. So that you don't miss out on a story from someone who you've friended. And in that respect, I wouldn't mind having something akin to DeviantArts "watchers".

However, I'm not sure we're a big enough site to warrant this feature being put into use. Its not likely that a friends work is going to fade into the background, and all their stuff is listed on their profile, and generally doesn't change all that fast.

Friends?

Lets not forget that most of us talk to each other on a daily bases. Anyone worth friending, I would have already talked to earlier.

Friends?

"Why can't we be friends?" hehe

Friends?

I was thinking the exact same thing. If I didn't know cool better, I would think he was insulting everyone on this site.

Friends?

No insult intended. It is just the most active members are the only ones I would friend. Quite frankly how many are there 10 or 15?
