Howabout make all articles publicly editable?

All changes must be rejected or accepted by an article moderator. 5 points given out to any accepted modification with the option of additional point bonuses.

Articles only give 10 points though. Seems kinda unfair if Person A takes an hour to a few hours to write an article, and gets 10 points, only to have Person B add a couple lines or fix a mistake and get 5+ points.

It would sure encourage getting articles fixed up / written though.

We can always scale point rewards down too.

I reckon we could go even further and eliminate original authors from articles and instead just have a list of contributors (made up of everyone who has written or edited part of the article).

Or person who created the article and people who helped edit or contribute?

Yes, the person who first started writing the article would be counted as a contributor too.

I think they should get at least some credit for writing the original article though. Maybe just a (author) or something.

What I think we should do, is there should be a button at the top of each article called 'show contributions', when clicked, we see a list of who contributed. Each name is colored. Then, all of the text on the article changes to the appropriate color to show who wrote it. So if only the first paragraph was edited by contributor #2, he'll only get the words he wrote/changed as his colour. Make sense?

I like that. It would be fairly easy to implement wouldn't it?

I think it would require hours of work, actually.

Well, THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA took hours to built. Just a lot of them.wink

Haha, I didn't want to put a number on it without knowing.

Completely, completely agree.

Then on our profile page, there should be a list of articles we've contributed on + total number of words contributed.

Can I add in a point here, in case it wasn't noted... That we should -take out- that bug I found for editing the articles now? Because I could edit them now, without needing moderator approval.

Just wanted to remind you guys in case you forgot. Alex, you can PM me if you don't know what I'm talking about.

I like the idea, but this gets technically complicated very fast... and next thing you know, you've built a wiki system.

Wonder if there's a manual process we can facilitate? I mean, someone can just create a revision of an article by sending changes via PM or even submitting a new article.

Multiple authors are nice, but it's easy just to have one author who might give credit to someone (in the article itself) for helping. Perhaps mods should be able to change ownership?

Oh, and mods can always use judgment to award points.

I wonder if perhaps we could attach some sort of free wiki to the site rather than coding one from scratch.

I actually kind of like this idea.

Eeeeehhhh.... integrating 3rd-party software is not fun, and a bit of a pain. It may be a good business choice / time investment... but this is a hobby and i do enough boring / not fun stuff during the work day :-)

Just curious, is their any reason you haven't put any ads on the site? Is it just a lot of work to integrate them, or have you just felt they were never worthwhile/would just be in the way?

It's pretty easy to do.

My educated guess... if there were a few leaderboard ads, sidebar ads, and interstitial ads during storygame play (i.e. a full-page ad that you had to click thru to resume playing... like a commercial break), I think the site could generate a few hundred bucks a month.  That doesn't seem worth it to me.

Now if we could generate $5-10K/month, then it'd be worth it because I could hire a full-time programmer... which would be awesome. But you know, that's not an easy revenue goal to hit :-)

I didn't know the site needed one. I figured after all these updates we would go back to only minor changes/fixes here or there, which shouldn't really require a full-time employee. Unless the site has more upkeep to it than I thought.

Only reason I asked about ads is I think having a couple could generate enough funds for a yearly contest or something like that. Maybe draw some more people into creating storygames and draw new people in. Which in turn would generate more ad revenue, to make bigger prizes/more contests, to draw more people in, etc, etc.

Just I thought. I noticed you guys had a contest a while back for money, so it's not a new concept (though I'm not sure how many people were a part of it last time)

Oh it definitely doesn't need one, but it'd be pretty awesome. But yeah, I guess such a full-time guy would also help do support, evangelism, organize contests, and all those things in addition to just doing code.

Speaking of contests... a new contest is coming. And there will be some pretty sweet prizes.

Well, there's always the option of just hosting our articles on another site. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I really like the idea of wiki style articling. I could monitor the other site for changes and award points accordingly.

So pretty much an employee just to manage the site. I think I remember JJJ making a tease thread a while back telling us lots of big things were coming, so it's nice to hear one of those things is a cool new contest.
