Is it possible to add to a story after having published it?

Yes, just unpublish it and edit all you want  :)

Then republish when you're ready.

So there's no way to leave it up and add to it, only to connect the chapters later?

That is correct. You cannot edit a game while it is published.

Berka is absolutely right. So, don't make the same mistake I did. xD Post only when you're 150% SURE that your story is complete. No dead-ends, no holes, no scrapped chapters, no abandoned pages, no bugs. Otherwise you'll be unpublishing and republishing a lot.
