Hello out there...

Hello CYS community. My name is Breezy, and I've been a member here a few weeks now. Up until today I only had access via mobile, so I was unable to post here on the forums. Now I can actually make use of the forums to become a more involved member of the community here. Woohoo! I'm so excited. It's been very tough to get my book written or get help with different parts of it, but now it should be easier... yay! So anyways, just wanted to say hello... :P

Hi there. I hope you enjoy your time here at the site.

Thank you very much... at the moment the advanced editor is kicking my rear end. (Sigh.) I will figure it out eventually, though. No worries. :P

I understand -- but it is a LOT of fun once you figure out all the options you have there!

I'm slowly learning... My story has roughly 30 pages so far, and I haven't even written half of the first part. (I broke it down into 4 parts.) It's the scripting that's mostly tripping me up. I had so many plans for how my story would be played, but I'm having to backtrack and rewrite as it's so far beyond my meager scripting skills...

UPDATE: Advice anyone?

I went ahead and added this to my original post to avoid having so many open forums. A little background on my experience here at CYS: when I first joined I only had access via mobile, so having no access to the forums for help, I started by reading all the useful articles available. From the suggestion of one of these articles, my first storybook idea was loosely based upon my teenage years. Then, out of no where.... inspiration struck. I began developing a story based on a novel I started years ago, but never finished. Since then, I've been frantically typing away like a madwoman lol.

So here is where I need advice: I have my story completely outlined and mapped out... basically the whole game is already planned and mapped out. But I started running into problems as soon as I began actually setting the story up on this site. As of right now, the story is roughly 20 pages long, between 3-5 paragraphs per page with 2-3 links every other page or so.... and I have completely hit a brick wall. I have come to realize some of my ideas for the game are unfeasible, and I'm having trouble with the scripting every other page. (Grrr.) I have concluded that until I have better understanding of scripting and CYOA stories in general, sadly I cannot continue at this time.

Advice! Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Should I look around for a co-author to finish my story with me? Or should I just set the idea aside for now and concentrate my energies into developing a new story. (Facepalm.) It will be hard for me to do the latter...but not impossible! Another idea is to wait and let this story become my epic, while creating similarly games to better understand the format. If anyone can can input any advice.... it would be greatly appreciated! I'm literally lost and feeling devastated. I have spent innumeral hours on this site creating this game and plotting the story. (Sob, sniff sniff.) Nah, but I am frustrated with myself for attempting to create such a massive, complex game on my own with no previous experience at these type of stories.

Honestly, when it comes to scripting, it's normal to be frustrated & have trouble debugging (figuring out what's going wrong), although as you gain experience it'll get easier. But yes, I think you should continue your project, amending it as necessary if parts of it aren't feasible. Your scripting skills won't improve unless you use them, and if you really can't figure something out, there are people here who will help.

Best of luck!

Thanks very much for your advice! I don't want to stop working on the story at all, but I'm to CYOA in general and have ever meager scripting skills. I will take and break for a day or so before deciding what to do. Hopefully, after resting from creating for a day maybe some of it will start sinking in rather than looking like gibberish(lmao) no offense to anyone... Anyways, thanks for posting and nice to meet you.

What sorts of things are you doing that's requiring extensive, difficult scripting? Perhaps there's an easier way to do what you're thinking of doing.

@Ogre11   would probably be best addressed in a PM as I really don't want to give too many details away on the forums. One of the problems I had was with a link variable on one of the pages and the other was introducing an item. I was attempting to self teach some of the harder stuff using the articles and previous forum posts but cannot find what I am trying to do. (And too ashamed to ask if it's even possible. Dunno why...)

The scripting stuff is pretty powerful, but it does help to play with it to find out what it can do. There are certain ways that things happen and the order of actions is pretty important. If you want to PM me, I might be able to describe how to do specific things that you're trying to do, and it might be easier than you think!

Ask in the advanced editor forum. So long as you're specific, we can tell you if it's doable/how its done.

Thank you Ogre11 and killa_robot for your advice. I've decided to take a break from writing for a few days to read some of the other stories on the site and become more familiar with CYOA stories in general.

An excellent plan. You might also want to investigate the work being published by Choice of Games, and the work collected at Twinery.org. Both ChoiceScript and Twine actually have some advantages over making your games here... as the loyalists here are no doubt tired of me saying. And to be fair, working here DOES have some advantages, too. But if you hate scripting here... welllll, you might hate it less if you were working in one of those two.

Thanks for your feedback. And in response, I don't hate scripting. I'm just beginning to get the hang of it. And I've already made some friends here... so I don't plan on leaving so soon, thanks.
