Hi, I'm new, I just made an account as I'm trying to write a gamebook kinda thing. What is it like around here, what do we do?

It's pretty friendly around here. We just write really, but if you want your post to be seen more you have to make three @s to EndMaster, he's one of the more veteran mods and will help you navigate the site.

You could read published story games or write new ones yourself and we will read them. You could also write reviews on story games you've read. You could also read reviews that we will write on story games written by you. Then there's the forums...

Yeah, basically you just read and write. Welcome aboard :]

awesome! Where would I post stuff I'd written?

Creative Corner, or just hit that publish button on your story game when it's completely finished.

Ok cool, it's not completely finished yet. First time writing a gamebook

Make sure you take your time, first impressions mean a lot.

Oh ok, I'll try not to publish anything too soon then. Still not 100% sure if what I'm doing is any good. Is it common for the protagonist to be potentially villainous?

That's called an anti-hero, and don't worry about common either. Just write a plot you think you would enjoy reading, and you'll get your feedback after you publish. Just make sure it's proofread.

I wouldn't say it's common, but you see it.  And don't worry so much about it being good.  Your first few storygames are very likely not to be good, and you just have to weather that storm and get better and better.  Good luck.  Enjoy the process.

I really suggest browsing a few storygames, and their comments too. It would be the fastest way to get an idea of what the editor is capable of and what most readers are looking for.

Thanks!

Are there any rules I need to be aware of? Do I get kicked or something if I don't post?

Hello There

Its probably the opposite. The more you post the more you're likely to annoy people. As long as you're silently reading or not bothering people you'll be fine.

You're fine, you will receive plenty of notice if you're doing anything that's a problem. The only instabans are for advertising spam or for those rare extremes of storygame content too degenerate even for this lot. Nothing for you to worry about.

Fair enough

Hello There

I hope you don't use it for any writing!

Hello There

Nah, I don't use AI anymore, and certainly not for writing. The stuff it writes is even worse than my own writing, if that's possible

Well, literature is art, and the best ingredient is the human soul to season up said art.

Welcome to CYS. There are stories to read and writers that appreciate those that read them and even go the extra proverbial miles to comment.

And you can also write too.

I'll go find some stories to read. I was trying to write my own, but seeing the standard here, I think it's better not to

Hello There

On the contrary, you should.  Write a bunch of stuff even if it isn't good.  The first million words is just for practice.

Hello There

Ok thanks, that is encouraging

Hello There

As other have stated, reading and reviewing published storygames is greatly appreciated. Writing your own is also encouraged. Hope you enjoy your stay :)

I'll give some a read, I'd like to write but my writing sucks- I won't subject you guys to that

Hello There

No one is good at the very start. It takes practice to get better at writing. No pressure to submit anything, but don't feel like you can't share anything. This site will give good, critical feedback as you continue to share what you write.
