I'm sure I'm late to the thread, but I'll give my two cents anyway.
#1 don't get your expectations too high. Although I'm doubting your ability to write, most people who think way too much about their story gets either crushed or annoyingly defensive after recieving criticism. Which leads me to my second tip
#2 Appreciate criticism. What I notice the most about some other people (not all by any means) is that they view criticism as insults. When someone tells you that you need to change something about your story, or that they didn't like it, they're not just doing it to be rude, they just want to help. (Although there are people who just read and put 1s and every story, ignore those unless you get more than around 5, then there's probably a problem.
#3 Get in good graces with the other members. If you're planning on getting in on the forums, make friends with some of the people on the site. Not only will it make your time here more enjoyable, you'll be able to have a pre-ready audience for your first story.
#4 Like 3J said, don't be demanding. it does not incerase the number of people who read your story, and like I said, simply having your story in the new story section will get you plenty of views.
#5 If people see you spazzing out on the forums, or if you type like your keyboard is having a seizure, chances are you will be labelled a troll or moron before they even see what you type. I greatly believe in the saying "It's not what you say, it's how you say it". That basically means, it doesn't matter if you just disproved Einstein's theory of relativity, if you type it like you havn't written in English before (or speak in Ubonics, but that's another pet peeve), nobody will bother to read it.
I'd also like to know about these "boss trolls", I can only think of one person labelled as a troll by the community who also logs on semi-frequently.
