Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Foundation

Anyone read the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov? I highly recommend it. Classic sci-fi at it's best.

Fifty thousand years in the future (and an age apart from the robot stories) the Galactic Empire flourishes. Every inhabited world in the galaxy is united in a grand hegemony. In this age of prosperity, Psychohistorian Hari Seldon predicts it's downfall. By studying the social factors of large groups of people he has determined that the empire will crumble and a thirty thousand year dark age lies ahead.

In an attempt to save civilisation, the Foundation is established - a small community of scholars, scientists and technicians on the fringes of the galaxy. Curiously enough, there are no psychohistorians. As the empire starts to show its weakness and the outer planets break away and regress into feudalism, the Foundation becomes an island of atomic power in a sea of hungry, deprived barbarians.

Salvor Hardin, the galaxy's most skilled manipulator and magnificent bastard, is faced with the task of keeping the foundation alive. And that's just the first part.

Also, atomic power is awesome. I know this was written in the fifties, but seriously... We SPLIT ATOMS and use it for energy. We change ELEMENTS. Tell me that isn't cool.

I've read a good deal of it and I absolutely despite it. Asimov is possibly the most overrated sci/fi writer of all time. The idea of an exact social science is just stupid.

I've listened to about 3 Asimov's audiobooks with my dad, he's a pretty big fan of him. Truthfully, I thought they were just okay, but I see how people like them.

I saw I, Robot. Yay. lol

Foundation sounds cool, but stories about perfect societies crumbling or perfect societies in general bore me. I like Sci-Fi that's futuristic but is still recognizable from today's standpoint. But Foundation does seem like an interesting look into the human psyche, so I'll definitely find some time to not read it.

JJJ- The foundation's social science is not exact. The psychohistorians always come up with probabilities, and the calculations have to be constantly revised. Also, it cannot predict the actions of individuals, only large groups. Seems fair to me.

Also anubis, it's not a story about perfect societies or dystopias.

Oh, and I Robot the movie has nothing to do with Asimov's writing except poaching the 3 laws of robotics.

Yeah, I know. I, Robot was more like Caves of Steel I believe.
