Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Even if the Academy is a bit of a joke, it's always fun to do this. Going to start it off with mine, obviously. The categories and nominees are here: https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2016

Actor in a Leading Role: Probably going to go to DiCaprio, but Fassbender deserves it more.

Actor in a Supporting Role: Should be Tom Hardy, absolutely. If he doesn't get it, I'll be pissed.

Actress in a Leading Role and Actress in a Supporting Role: Don't care, but it's probably going to go to Blanchett/Mara.

Animated Feature Film: If Anomalisa doesn't get this, I'm going to be pissed.

Best Picture: The Revenant deserves it, but it's probably going to be Spotlight or Room.

Cinematography: The Revenant is fucking gorgeous.

Costume Design: Probably going to Carol, but I wouldn't be surprised to see The Revenant get it. Some rad ass outfits in there, especially Domnhall Gleeson's costumes.

Directing: Another one of those "I'll be pissed if Innaritu doesn't get it.

Film Editing: Don't care, but it'll probably go to The Revenant.

Foreign Language Film: Haven't seen any of them.

Makeup and Hairstyling: Probably The Revanant.

Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing: Don't give a shit, not even enough to guess a winner.

VIsual Effects: Mad Max or bust.

Music (Original Score): It sure as hell better not be Star Wars.

Writing (Original Screenplay): Ex Machina deserves it, and I'll be angry if Inside Out gets it.

Documentary (Short Subject): Don't care, and haven't seen any of them.

Documentary (Feature): Don't care, but Amy is probably going to get it.

Short Film (Animated): World of Tomorrow was a pretty good dark comedy (and the only one I've seen).

Short Film (Live Action): Don't care (and haven't seen any of them).

Music (Original Song): Don't care.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay): Probably going to The Martian.

I just like laughing at the people protesting because they think the awards are racist. You really can't make that claim without sounding like you have a bunch of sour grapes stuck in your craw, and I find that mental image downright hilarious.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Not really. I wouldn't say the awards are actively racist, but considering the majority of voters are white, male, and above the age of 40, there's going to be bias.

I was surprised that Fassbender wasn't nominated for Macbeth. Phenomenal movie.

EDIT: Holy shit, Fury Road is nominated for Best Picture.

EDIT II: I'm calling it. Fury Road will win for Cinematography.

EDIT III: Why not Star Wars?

EDIT IV: That one song for Specter will win, because the artist is trendy.

EDIT V: I haven't seen Anomalisa. Is it good?

EDIT VI: I think Lawrence will win, despite the fact that she's bland and talentless; she's trendy.

EDIT II: I'm calling it. Fury Road will win for Cinematography.

I will flip the fuck out if this happens. It deserves visual effects, but cinematography...? Just no...

EDIT III: Why not Star Wars?

It's just not very good or as memorable as JW's score in the Original trilogy, and most times it's just background noise. Star Wars music should NOT just be background music.

EDIT V: I haven't seen Anomalisa. Is it good?

Fantastic. It's directed by Charlie Kaufman, and of which I have a love affair with, by the way.

Fury Road is gorgeous. I watched it the other day, and it blew my mind.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Most of it is CGI, though, which is why it should win visual effects. IIRC, they even fucking CGI'd the sand. The Revenant is just stunningly gorgeous (and really fucking cold, too), it's almost unreal. The director also used natural lighting. And this coming from someone who's seen Tree of Life, The Fall, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I'm not so sure about how much of it is CGI. Certain parts, obviously, but a lot of it was practical.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

You know, I haven't watched it in a while, and the thing I was remembering when I said it was mostly CGI was the tornado/sandstorm. I looked it up, and your right, a lot of it isn't CGI. But I still think The Revenant deserves cinematography.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Just watched The Revenant. Definitely deserves cinematography.

Has anyone thought... Maybe we shouldn't give an Oscar to DiCaprio? All the ones who do seem to fade away. Let's keep him trying ;D

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I'd rather see that particular meme / joke die. The poor guy's paid his dues, he deserves recognition.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

He'll get it, for sure. If he doesn't, it'll be a HUGE Oscar snub. I don't think he deserves it for his performance in The Revenant, though. The Wolf of Wall Street or Django Unchained, though? Absolutely.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

The Oscars have a long history of being given to people for the wrong performance. But yeah, he definitely deserves it for Django... and others, imho. (I enjoyed his performance in Gatsby and Inception in particular.)

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

His performance in Inception was bang-on, but I wouldn't call it Oscar material.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Leo always gives 110%, but I rarely feel like he turned in a performance no other actor could match.  Like in Revenant: it sure seems to me that if Bale had done it, that's almost exactly how he would have played the character.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

You place more value in the award than the people giving it out, then.

Though I will clarify: I wasn't explicitly saying he deserved an Oscar for Inception, only that I particularly enjoyed his performance in it.

Compare Cobb to Glass vs Eames to Fitzgerald.

Candie was pretty impressive.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I'm still impressed by the glass breaking scene. I mean, damn, that's dedication to staying in character. xD

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Edit locked, so: it was more of a "he's been consistently giving quality performances" comment than anything.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

He absolutely deserves one.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

seriously, Cynical? You liked Ex Machina too?!  We can officially be film buddies. XD

I mean, Carol was fine, but I wasn't blown away by it like some ppl apparently are.

It feels like one of those films you're not allowed to criticize.

Whoever appears to old white audiences the most.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Sure, but what/who do you think should win?

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Whoever cares the least.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

It's no fun playayo.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I wouldn't say that haha. They're all equally deserving in my opinion, so I'd want the award to go to the person who cares the least about strangers' opinions on their job performance.

Leonardo might win this year if Steve Harvey announces it.

Bumping. Tom Mccarthy just won best original screenplay for Spotlight.

Best adapted screenplay: Charles Randolph and Adam McKay for The Big Short

Hey, can you keep me posted? Watching TWD.

Thanks dude.

I'm having trouble, because streams keep getting taken down, so I'm hopping from one source to another; probably missed a bunch because of this, and will probably miss more.

Alicia Vikander just got best supporting actress for The Danish Girl. Ugh.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Did I just hear that Mad Max won best picture? The shit...

Sound Mixing and Sound Editing both to Mad Max.

Visual Effects to Ex Machina (wow, awesome!)

Best animated short to Bear Story.

Best animated feature to Inside Out (fuck the oscars).

Best Supporting Actor to Mark Rylance.

Best Documentary Short to A Girl in the River.

Best Documentary Feature to the obvious Amy.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I'm okay with it, because she was great in Ex Machina.

Well, to predict the oscars last year I bought this: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/5266 but sadly it doesn't work for this year.

Dammit, if they don't give it to Leo, he's going to try harder. I mean, effort is always great, but Jesus Christ, he's going to turn into fucking Nicholas Cage sooner or later. We already saw him circling that singularity in Django!

Fury Road just won three in a row. Feathers for Mr. Miller's hat.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

I know it won the two sound categories; what was the third?

What the fuck. In what universe was Tom Hardy not the obvious winner?

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

^ this

I guess Tom is the new Leo.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Leo finally won

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

It was so by the book. Only thing I was surprised at was Rylance winning supporting actor. Definitely an upset. It really belonged to Hardy, AND Stallone was the front runner.

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

^ rylance was the best part of that film, for sure, but Tom Hardy was great in multiple films which I guess counts for nothing.

have you seen Locke?

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

So many memes that can no longer be used. Much sad.

But still happy for him, haha. It was about time!

Oscar Predictions, and your opinions/comments

Fucking Spotlight? Ah, well. I thought The Revenant was the best, but if it shows the world what the Catholic Church is lke, all the power to it.
