Bone Tomahawk

I mentioned it earlier, so I figured I ought to make a thread.

For those not in the know, Bone Tomahawk is a Western/Horror movie starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Mathew Fox and Richard Jenkins. It came out in 2015, to the tune of critical acclaim. It tells the story of a group of pre-linguistic savages who kidnap people from a local town, and the posse that bands together to hunt them down.

It was criticized for  a scene in which a man was scalped, flipped upside down and sliced in half starting at the anus, before being pulled apart and eaten.

I recommend the film for anyone looking for a truly disgusting horror flick.

Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Yeah that movie aired on scfy once (without the scalping scene.)

Oh I liked that movie!

You forgot about the part where they stuffed his scalp into his mouth before slowly chopping him in half.

Anyway, I really kinda think it's silly, calling it a "horror western."  It's a western.  It has one really violent scene (which we've now ruined for everyone XD) other than that it follows western conventions- its not a "horror film" at all.

I disagree with the idea that one gore scene automatically means we have to append "horror" to a film.

Don't know how I missed that one, but I'll be sure to put it on the to watch list now.

It's a good film because it's a bit different from most other films and you never really know what's going to happen next. The gore scene wasn't that bad, seems pretty similar to how cows start their magical journey towards becoming Big Macs. I'm sure there's a lot more disgusting cannibal films out there but I suppose it's a question of taste (no pun intended). :)

I think anyone who watched it thinking it was going to be a graphic cannibal film would be disappointed.

Definitely. Cannibal Holocaust is much more gruesome, apparently it was so realistic the Director was charged with killing the actors in the film and had to invite them to court to demonstrate all was well :) I think some of the best films are the ones where people think they are real I think like Borat and Bad Grandpa... I don't think anyone's going to be mistaking Bone Tomahawk for a documentary :P

Cannibal Ferox is usually considered the runner up to Cannibal Holocaust as far as that genre goes.

If you want a retro homage to those kind of movies, there's Eli Roth's Green Inferno, which came out a couple years ago. It has its moments but still doesn't quite reach their level of infamy.

Was that movie any good? I usually like Eli Roth's films but haven't had the chance to watch that one...

I thought it was okay. I really wanted to see it when I saw the trailers two years ago, but the movie got shelved and placed in development hell for a little while so by the time I actually got to see it my enthusiasm for it had waned a bit.

But it probably was for the best that my enthusiasm waned since it didn’t quite live up to the four bag chunk blower cannibal movies of the late 70s-early 80s, so I wasn’t really disappointed by it either.

It was sort of odd that they had all the native women covered up given that Eli’s past films have never really shied away from gratuitous nudity and here it would at least make sense in relation to the setting. Despite all the cannibalism, it probably wasn’t even as gruesome in comparison to his other movies. The Hostel movies in particular had a lot more cruelty and torture in them.

Overall, it’s sort of a mixed bag. On one hand if you’re familiar with the old cannibal movies you might appreciate how Eli tried to emulate them. But then again if you are familiar with the old cannibal movies you might also be really disappointed that he didn’t do the greatest job in trying to emulate them.

If you go in as a “cannibal virgin” you can of course judge the movie without any previous influence or bias.

To sum up, see if you got nothing better to do. Even if you don't like it, you can always have fun ranting about how bad you thought the movie was on an internet forum.

There's a lot of things I Want to do before I die

Watch a marthon of saw and watch cannibal holocaust.

I don't get to scared when its over the top gore, but cannibals, that's a whole other level of shit.

I definitely need to watch Bone Tamohawk, if it's that gruesome. Thanks for recommending this, Malkalack!

@breezy134  Are you ok with foreign films?

Two French films:

Inside:  a pregnant woman attacked in her home by a woman trying to steal her baby

Martyrs: girl & her friend try to find the cult who kidnapped & tortured her.

Oh wow, will definitely have to add those to my list of must-see movies. I actually can read and write basic French... Just not too good with the speaking part, as my Texan accent is totally dominant lol. Thanks for suggesting those... But please no more movies. (Sadly, I rarely find time to watch them.)
