I'm thinking of leaving Arkansas after I get my Bachelor's. Despite the low cost of living and the fact that many of you would empty your retirement funds just to not have me in your state, I have really had about as much of the culture here as I can tolerate.

I'm thinking about Oregon, because I understand it to essentially be California, but with ferrets, cooler weather, and fewer people.

Are there any Oregonians here who could give me a good list of pros and cons?

I've heard Mississippi is worse than Missouri and Arkansas put together.

Florida (specifically South Florida) is infinitely worse than Missouri and Arkansas. Oregon is a very pretty state by the way (and much better looking than Arkansas). It has some really wonderful forests.

Was it the incest or the racism?

No, Malk, it isn't the:

• fact that everyone's family tree looks like it belongs on the Christmas episode of the Peanuts
• fact that every town with a population of under 20,000 has a Ku Klux Klan chapter.
• truck beds full of carcasses of whatever animal happens to be in season
• meth villages up in the hills
• shitty law enforcement
• fact that my city's pound is next door to the city landfill for easy carcass disposal (I'd almost applaud the city for practicality, had it not purchased a $130,000 Christmas tree that could have been bought for only $50,000.)
• hyper-restrictive drinking age laws.
• blue day laws.
• fact that my bicycle has been stolen by methbabies two times.
• fact that some hillbilly moron has a greater right to the guns that he uses to terrorize people than I do to my pets.
• poor climate for wild mushrooms
• mosquitos that can carry off a dog
• low quality of education

It's all of those things.

What's stopping you, then?

The fact that I am in school, have little money, and my only form of anxiety control is to isolate myself from everybody and start munching Ativan until the song in my head switches from "I Wanna be Sedated" to "You're so Vain".

Well, there's always the mildly chilly, rainy, urban/suburban place full of annoying hipsters. There's also really cold, rainy rural places full of bullshit.

Either way, it's like a colder, greener Colorado in that and a few other respects, except with weed that's both shitty and Illegal. Wisconsin's not much better, but at least we have like 2 festivals a month and at least one serial killer per decade to keep us from dying of boredom, like they had in the Medieval Ages. Oregon just has coffee shops and annoying stock characters who get into 30 minute dialogues about the pronunciation of foreign food words, English Major homework, and political correctness.

I don't exactly know that for sure, but I do know that I've been to a few coffee shops there full of beards, beanies, wordy-shirts and big glasses.

Oregon is the poor man's California. That being said, I can get behind all of the west coast+Colorado.

What makes Oregon "the poor man's California"?

It's actually affordable, but is not as full of tech companies.

When I visted portland it was actually pretty nice, it was like a city built into a forest, although i prefer seattle over that kind of nature stuff.

For reals though, there's soooooooooooo much forest in Oregon.

Oregon stole the name portland from  maine.

+Beautiful green trees everywhere. 

+A coast, with absolutely stunning sunsets.

+Bike lanes just about everywhere, and wide roads.

+Higher average of nice people, compared to other states I've been to/lived in.

+Wild mushrooms /everywhere/. 

-Rains /ALL/ the time. (minor exaggeration)

-From what I've seen, no stray dogs. Lots of cats everywhere instead. x_x 

-Lots of mosquitos during the summer.

Where in Oregon are you looking at specifacally?

So, Arkansas with feral cats and a coast?

Portland or Bend.

Never been to Oregon, but it's my favorite state and has such a diverse landscape that anyone from any part of the globe (except for a dystopian city) will feel welcome there.

Also the Simpsons is most likely set there.

How exactly do you know that if you've never been there?

Geography is my specialty or something. Anyhow, it has deserts, snow, mountains, beaches, forests, and mosquitoes. As I said, probably the most diverse landscape of any state.

I live in Cali and I´ve been to Oregon many times because I´m so close but just know it gets really cold and it rains a lot.

I don't know much, but I would say that the food is enjoyable.
