Midget is Sick!!!

My dog, Midget, is sick! I can't afford to take her to the vet. I don't know what to do for her. She hasn't eaten in three days now, and now she is puking and refusing to eat... Anyone have any advice? Does anyone know what to do for a sick dog? I'm really worried about her... :/

Occasionally, local rescues have programs to help people cover certain vet costs. Of course, rescues generally struggle to fund themselves, so that's not something you can really rely on.

I'm not a professional, though, so as everyone else says, take the following as nothing more than the word of a friend. I've had a lot of dogs go through symptoms like that but get better after 3-5 days, though.

I'm by no means a vet or dog expert, but maybe see if she'll eat some grass. There's a theory that it helps soothe stomach irritation in dogs temporarily.

But that's only a theory. As far as I'm aware, science has no solid evidence on the benefits of grass eating.

Yeah, I've heard that before. My dog would eat grass himself and I wondered why. I remember watching a TV program saying that it helps them with indigestion.

Do you watch her diet? Making sure she is not eating human food (Or if she is, not too much)? She can't get into the trash, or anything like that? Nothing she could eat that would make her sick?

Outside of onions, certain types of chocolate, grapes and raisins, there aren't many 'human' foods that can make dogs sick. Despite popular belief, dogs are omnivores, and have evolved alongside humans to be able to scarf down most of the scraps we leave.

I remember the lab we used to have would pick his own blueberries and raspberries right off the bush.

Do onions make them sick? I've heard of the others but not onions. The last thing she ate was my left over hambuger and I think it was made with onions in the patty. Idk.

Yeah, onions aren't too good for a lot of animals, I'm fairly certain.

Crap! I didn't know. I always give her some of my burger... (i don't like onions so my handmade ones never have onions and i gave her that one because of the dam onions, smh.)

Well, I hope it isn't the case, but it might be a good idea to look up and check for symptoms of onion poisoning, then.

Yeah, onions are the common food that people don't realize are bad for dogs.

Grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, avocados, and caffeine are all at least mildly toxic or upset the bacteria balance in dogs. Though, I doubt many people feed their dogs the latter part of that list regardless.

You could try a 'wet' canned dog food if you normally feed her dry stuff and see if she'll try that. But otherwise your best bet is that she flushes out her system or goes to the vet. Yeah, I know. They're expensive - my German Shepherd just went for stitches after he cut himself on a piece of shale in the quarry. Then he had to go back after he tore them out - but digestive problems can be serious.

Thanks for the advice. I will try it tonight. But I will definitely call the vet in the morning. Maybe they can at least offer some home remedies I can take if I explain my situation.

There used to be a man that offered veterinary services online in Texas, but he was sued by other vets or the state for violating some stupid Texas law limiting the medium in which he could provide veterinary services.

The case went to the supreme court. Unfortunately, he lost.

Digestive problems.  I'd see the vet ASAP since she's eaten so little for so long.

That's what I need to do, but I can't afford to take her... that's why I was wondering if anyone knew what I should do. I tried googling it, but it says take her to the vet. I just don't have money to take her. This sucks. She's really sick and she still won't even drink water... :/

But, you were the one that tagged him. YOU SUMMONED HIM FOR THIS EXACT PURPOSE!  But yeah, honestly that was pretty funny. I laughed for a while when I saw it.

(sorry couldn't resist)

Any luck calling the vet? Some of the local ones here are fine with giving advice over the phone, especially if it's a dog you've taken to see them before. I'm just not sure vomiting is anything anything can be done about, it may just be something you have to wait out while whatever made her sick works it's way out of her system.

Is that a dead dog??? (Actually looks a little like Midget, except Midget is about half that size.)

The vet couldn't help. I've taken my dogs there before, but not Midget. I just moved back to Texas about six months ago. But she is doing a little better. She isn't eating yet, but she is up and about. And she had a little water today and yesterday. (Otherwise, I might be more irritated with that video, whatever it was...)

If she's drinking water that's the most important thing. A few days without eating won't hurt her, but dehydration is the biggest concern, especially if she's throwing up.

About the video....it's not a well known fact, but some dogs are aquatic.

Cats, too.

For some reason, I think the guy in the cat video was alligator hunting. 0_o

(At least, that's what I deducted. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope...)

Maybe your dog is aquatic too? Maybe that's her problem. If you don't have a river nearby, have you tried putting her in a well?

Polar dogs are also a thing.

On a serious note, I hope your dog gets better. I know how it feels to lose a dog you've loved and cared for.

With the caveat that I'm not a vet, and advice from someone over the internet really shouldn't substitute getting a professional to take a look:

It's not too bad if this is the only time she's ingested onions, but her liver is probably trying really hard to get rid of the thiosulfate from the onions, and her kidneys are probably strained from filtering out any lysed red blood cells from the onion poisoning.

Look for symptoms of anemia - is her heart rate really fast, was her urine reddish in the first few days afterwards? She seems to be displaying some of the other symptoms of lost appetite and vomiting.

You should check if the shelter or the local animal rescue has services available, because your dog might need to get hydrated intravenously if she's refusing to drink water and it sounds like she's losing a lot of fluids. She might also need detox, usually with activated charcoal (which you might be able to get at a pet shop, or even in the pharmaceutical section of a grocery store. I've seen some bottles of activated charcoal pills go for around $6.00, and if you do find a selection of them, you can mix the powder inside into your dog's food).

Midget is Sick!!!

Be careful when feeding him large(r) amounts of activated charcoal though. If I remember correctly, it might contribute to further dehydration.

Also, I'm not a vet, but puking and refusing to eat might have many different causes. For example, it might indeed be caused by something he ate, but it could also be a more serious issue, like a bowel obstruction. Try calling your local vet/shelter and ask if they can at least give you some advice.

Thank you! That is what I plan to do as soon as they open in a few hours. I just hope they can give me any advice over the phone. It's frowned upon to give advice without examining the animal here in Texas. But maybe they can make an exception. She still hasn't eaten or had any water. And now she is freaking me out cause she keeps hiding in the closet and under the bed, which she never does. If I remember correctly, dogs tend to find a hiding spot before they die. I just hope she gets better. The kids will be devastated if anything happens to her... :/

Midget is Sick!!!

Sometimes they just wanna hide because they feel like crap. Especially if the kids are at the noisy/earpulling phase. I wouldn't worry too much... I mean, not that you have a choice. But just keep an eye on her and hope for the best, right? :/

Midget is Sick!!!

Sometimes even I hide from kids when they're like that.
