Would it be acceptable to put ambient music or sounds into a storygame? I wouldn't want anything too loud (some people may be playing late at night and suddenly they hear loud music) but I can't help it if they have their speakers too loud. That's the only major downside I see, the only other downside is it might take a while to load or sound choppy for very slow old computers. I was planning to make an invisible iframe syntax as a global page script so the music/sound would play each page. (This could be really cool if someone turned a page and heard a page-turning sound) I was just curious if there are unwritten rules about that sort of stuff or if I'm just sputtering nonsense.

I dunno if it's possible, as I think it might refresh every time you click a link, but there's definitely no rules against it. Pretty cool if you pull it off though.

It works, I've already tested this in advance :3 So far it works on both my laptops and a very old desktop. As long as the player doesn't have their volume at super loud levels, it should be fine. (Which I'll just make a warning at the beginning telling the reader to turn their volume relatively low)

Also I found that some people do story-games with music playing in another browser tab, so maybe I should have an option for no music.

Could you show us so I could see if it works on ipad?

Err... well 2 things -

1: If I inserted the code here it'd play music whenever someone views this thread which would not only scare the shit out of me it'd give quite a few people a spook xD (although that'd be hilarious, if someone replies I wouldn't be able to take the sound out :S)

2: smart trolls would use the code to make an un-traceable music player that would infect entire threads with loud music or gross sounds or something. It's a pain to track down since it's an invisible iframe with no box around it, so it does have its dangers.

If it doesn't work with a tablets or phones, then the story just won't have music. It's not a huge deal, just a cool feature. :3

Edit:: As long as the tablet/phone supports html webpages with embedded links it should work just fine :-) no worries. I tested it with my Ipad and my sisters' Iphone

There isn't any way to get past the first page of the story to block cheaters using the sneak peek feature, so no xD you'll see it when the story is done

No, I MUST see if this works, or if you're lying. Lol.

C'mon, just open up the sneak-peak for 5 mins... XD

Hahaha no sneak peeks xD

Everyone will have the chance to experience the same experience as everyone else at the same period of time. That makes it fair :3 (not that I've always been fair, I just think this situation calls for exceptional fairness)

Yeah... Color me suspicious of your ability to do that, and that's not even a color! :P

Honestly, I'd say no.

I know It would negatively effect my rating of the story. Also, make sure that if you do it, you put a warning in the description box.

I hate navigating to websites with music playing. Disgusting.

If I do put music into a game I'll be sure to definitely give warnings and such. I hate when random music plays when I go to a website too. Especially when a loud advertisement plays randomly. I was thinking of creating the same story game twice, one with and one without music/sounds. I don't think a whole song is very good for a story, but possible game audio tied with items sounds like a good idea to me.

Such as when a person uses a sword, it makes a sword swiping sound. Or when someone uses a bow, the game makes a 1-time-play arrow sound. I could tie it into variables related to the items used, such as a dice roll on whether the person hits the enemy or not - it will play the appropriate sound for the appropriate outcome of the choice. I don't think it'd be nice for every page or every item used, but every now and then - or for specific items/variables, it could add a lot of immersion into the story.

This would be a good idea, but for warrior cat games, Eh. Not so much.

People who make warriror cat games are losers.

I think it's a great idea! Adding music can enhance the mood if its done correctly. My only problem would be what would happen if the music would refresh for every page. Some things I would recommend:

1) Add a mute button to the sound. Some people like listening to their own music on the computer while reading online, so if the only way to stop the music is to exit the page or turn the volume off on the computer entirely that would piss off a ton of people.

2) Avoid using wordy songs. Wordy music tends to draw away from the text and distracts the reader. Use only if it completely complements the text.

3) Keep in mind that music you like may sound utterly horrible to someone else, thus defeating the purpose of setting a tone or an atmosphere. There have been many times where I would navigate to a website only to cringe at the sound of a barrage of horrible banging and shouting noises only to realize that this was supposed to be "music." Subjectivity is fine, just remember that there are some forms of music that more people can relate to more easily.

I wasn't specifically thinking songs or music. I was thinking audio and sound effects, so when someone uses their sword to attack - it makes a sword sound. Though a warning will be given at first or I'll make a marker that will let the reader know "This choice will make a sound" so they should turn their volume low if they don't want to hear a 1second play of "Shhing" (sword sound). It would be unfair of me to make 2 storygames exactly the same, one with and one without music. So I might be able to code in an option to turn sounds off... idk, it's a work in progress and I don't know if I'll end up using it often.

Mm, sound effects could be interesting too, but I think that it would add a level of redundancy after the novelty of it wears off. Sound effects are cool, but without any other sort of audio it would just sound weird.
