The Fall of Ivtan (2016 Storygame Contest)

My entry (if I can get it done in 10 days) will be "The Fall of Ivtan" a fantasy story based very loosely on the game Dwarf Fortress. You play as an elderly noble of the dwarven fortress Ivtan, a small dwarven military base established fifty years ago and now a thriving colony for the Mountain Empire. Although you are aware of your approaching death, life seems perfect and all seems right in the world. Until, suddenly, a new and unexpected danger shows itself to the world. And as you learn, this danger has the potential to change life as the races of the world know it if it is not extinguished. Work together with the other nobles to manage your fortress, prevent your citizens from succumbing to mass hysteria, lead your soldiers in war, and above all save your fellowdwarf from certain destruction at the hands of a new terror... may Asjeraik, in all His holy might, guide you...

Kind of a crappy introduction but it's the best I could come up with. At the moment I barely have even 25% of the story done so if I'm going to meet the deadline I'm going to have to be working super fast.

I'm not sure if I can put up work from the story. If the judges allow it I'll put up the first page (and anything else I deem necessary.)

It's a pretty generic introduction, but often simple ideas done a little differently to the norm can work extremely well, especially given this contest is not so long. Anyway I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Having 25% done is already a nice effort, by the way! I still have to write my first page...

Good luck with your story. I hope you finish it in time. It sounds interesting, and I look forward to playing it. :)

I remember you posting a short passage about this for the writing exercises on the Writing Workshop! It strikes me as being a bit different from the other storygames for the contest in that it sounds like a very concrete 'complete this real life objective' sorta deal, if you get me. As in most of the others seem to put the protagonist in a weird situation, but this seems like just an 'ordinary' part of the character's life, so it sounds unique. Not that either type of storygame sounds bad, but I'll be interested to see this kind of puzzle too.

Well what I wrote for Kiel's prompts isn't really connected to this. It just so happens that I really like Dwarf Fortress for all the stories you can come up with :P.

And you know I've been noticing exactly what you've described in a lot the other entries. The protagonists tend to be thrown suddenly into a terrible situation. In my story life is all good until an incident happens and your choices dictate the fallout, and generally things are more gradual.

Faster, faster! Good luck, and I do hope you manage to finish it in time.

Okay so here's an update. Basically there's no way I can get this done before the deadline. I've been busy all week thanks to exams and I didn't get any work done on the weekend either, and there's just no way I can complete this in 24 hours. I'm sorry, everyone. I'll be looking forward to reading and rating everyone else's entries however.

The deadline has really pushed me to completing this story though, so I'm going to work to see if I can get it done within the next few weeks.

I'd post the first page/previews but there's still some editing I want to do on the pages I have written already (which is like around 20).

Hey, now there's just over 12 hours to go, so logically you can finish now, right? :)

Good luck on keeping it going!
