One Day's Adventure

I did really enjoy this storygame, at least until I reached the ending of it. I liked the use of the main character's prior history to establish the statistics of the player character, which was also a great way of establishing the history along with the statistics. However, I would have liked that part of the storygame to have been expanded a bit more...mainly to allow me to get to know some of the characters before the storygame starts in the tavern.

This was the main problem I had with the storygame. There were a lot of characters and quests all in the tavern, and it left me actually forgetting who I'd spoken to. The first quest I tried out, which was the one getting bread, I managed to completely forget who I was getting the bread for...and when I tried to find the person to give the bread to, I ended up just clicking 'use item' until it actually worked. Come to think of it...that's how I managed to succeed with most of the quests, not unlike pressing random buttons frantically in a video game until something works.

I really liked being able to explore the town, and it was interesting to see that, eventually, the narration changed, talking about how the village was smaller and the player character was older. Though I was still unable to buy a drink from the bartender, despite the narration noting that I was older.

I liked the use of the temple and the different deities that could be given offerings. However, I couldn't really see any obvious impact on the storygame based on giving offerings to the deities...or the fae, for that matter. I also would have liked to be able to increase the health score, along with the money, as I felt that there were moments that should have contributed to the player character growing stronger...such as helping the blacksmith.

I would have liked a bit more detail about the player character's home, and perhaps one or two quests to be done there...or on the farms. Basically, it would have been good, in a storygame spanning the whole village, to have more characters and more quests in different areas...just to make the world feel a bit more vivid and engaging.

I liked that I could use almost all the items I picked up, but I wasn't able to figure out how or where the lantern could be used. I liked the fact that I could make a fishing rod using the rope, although I was a bit surprised that I couldn't use the rope later, when trying to jump across the buildings, as the rope remained in my inventory.

I would have liked a bit more guidance after completing all the quests, as I spent a while just clicking through randomly to see if there was anything else I could explore. Going back home seemed to be a potential ending, but I had nothing to click on (apart from to return to the village) until I selected the choice to end the game. And then the only option I had was to become a paladin.

All told, I did enjoy this storygame, but I would have liked for it to be a bit longer, with the characters who gave quests scattered throughout the village. And the amount of items to be used was great...but the weapons didn't always seem to make a difference to the outcome of a battle. I'm also not sure that picking the option to play a boy would have made much of a difference to the story itself, even if the narration was slightly different.

Man, I liked this so much to be start with, but that abrupt non-ending really hurt it. I'm gonna be honest, I don't think the game should've been published in this state.

I know it was part of a larger, abandoned project, but it doesn't seem like it would've taken much to smooth out some kind of ending instead of just suddenly smacking the player in the face with how uncompleted it is. I was really enjoying myself poking around the town and had other things I wanted to do, and the sudden end is made worse by being the same exact thing every time with just some points after a list of generic fantasy classes that are all going to be pretty unrelated to anything the player has done.

Why is it even called an RPG quiz when it's a pretty decent little game in its own right, with the only artifact of that being, again, the sudden ending page it shunts you over to in the middle of walking from one room to another?

The cat by the way is an infinite money generator, and doing nothing but handing it to a senile old woman over and over again ended the game with the same old text and 15 points in Rangering.

Anyway, I'd like to rate this higher because the freedom to explore the tavern and surroundings and all the little mini quests made this so enjoyable to start with, the single timed ending paged utterly disconnected from the narrative just torpedoed the whole experience though. I hope Gryphon finds the time to patch this one up a little and put in a few real ending, because it really wouldn't take much to improve it immensely.

Story and Worldbuilding: I like that this is a quiz and yet it has so much story. It is kind of like the beginning of secrets of the crag that then transformed into a local town adventure game.... wait is this a prequel?

I like all the different stories and paths you can learn about. It's all interesting and builds a cohesive world around the character. I have gone through several times looking for bugs and this is the first time I actually read through a lot of it. I should have done it sooner.

I do not really see the point of the question whether you are a boy or girl. It only seems to change the dialogue the slightest bit. I really liked the different characters you can meet that know you already. It isn't all just meeting strangers. It feels like there is more depth to the world because of it.

Gameplay: All of the links work. Some work more than they are supposed to though. I noticed that you fixed the tomas money glitch bug, but when there is money to be collected, I will find a way. It's basically just the same glitch that Tomas had, but with Elise the cat lady. The cat never leaves your inventory so you can just keep giving it back to her for 15 gold each time. I imagine my character just giving her the cat and taking it back over and over. It's very funny. You can also just redo whatever you lose at the gambling table but that was the same thing I found in secrets of the crag. I don't think it's fixable, more likely it's just how the randomization feature works for it.

The inventory is a bit wiered. You just keep the old guy's bread and the cat as mentioned before. You don't even need to pick up the stat book at the beginning of the game.

I also noticed that the game doesn't warn you when you are out of turns. It just suddenly ends. I put this complaint into gameplay because sometimes you can't finish a storyline and that constitutes as a gameplay issue.

Grammar: The grammar is pretty good if not perfect as expected from gryphon. He must proofread really well.

Overall: I had fun. I ended up a Ranger most of the time, which is what I usually go for in these kinds of things. I don't know how my copious gambling addiction didn't make me a rogue though. I suppose the bug I mentioned will probably be fixed and a bunch of newbs looking for easy money without clicking the back button a bunch of times will be upset. Whatever.6/8 Solely because you don't warn me about how much time I get to actually do stuff and it annoyed me a lot.

One Day's Adventure is a tightly constructed RPG with a couple of bugs, but a really well-thought out premise and a series of mechanics that are highly enjoyable to play through.

Even though the game is rather simple at first glance, depending on what choices you can make, you can go through the game several times, allowing for high deployability. The puzzles themselves take a little bit of poking around town to figure out, so it definitely feels like the game rewards you for the effort you put in.

The premise is simple. You're a young lad(or lass) in the local tavern, figuring out what you want to do with the rest of your life. I really liked how under this simple premise there are many mysteries and things going on in the town, like the potion guild front, that you have to figure out.

I saved the cat, helped find the wolf den, and sort of just ran around town until I got the Paladin ending.

I really liked how the actions in the beginning give you stats that later play into your strengths later on. Like when I chose to charm my mom out of not giving me veggies, I was able to talk the cat out of hiding. I feel like the variable work here is strong, and the delayed consequences are well constructed.

There are a few glitches. For one, there's an infinite glitch with the cat lady where you can basically hustle her for 15 coins repeatedly. I feel like there should be a mechanic where you give her the cat and then lose the cat from your inventory so that that encounter can't be abused.

Overall, this was really fun! I'm really happy to have gotten Paladin and I can't wait to try out Secrets of the Crag. Good work on this game, Gryphon!

Obviously, it’s a bit intimidating writing a review for the master of reviewing but here goes. Explore the area solving challenges and puzzles while trying to decide what to do as my future career? That basically sounds like college. Someone is rocking the items and variables! I eat my veggies like a man! It is clever that you managed to make choices on the page affect variables in the item. What is this technological wizardry?

The beginning part feels a bit like a cunningly disguised career-finding quiz. Everything shifts when we’re in the open-world adventure part and it’s quite fun wandering about and exploring everything. I visited everything but I think I did it in the wrong order and I ended up falling off a roof and dying / getting killed by bandits after not being able to figure out how to make money without dying after getting mugged. It’s a fun game but I’m not great at these puzzle type games (I actually had nightmares after trying to complete Ogre’s Escape the School!)

Still, I’ve got to admire the writing ability, technological ability and overall effort that went into the story and I’m sure a smarter reader than I will be able to make more progress and get more enjoyment out of it. Though I didn’t figure it out I enjoyed trying and it was a fun and interesting story. I’ll give it a 6/8.
