Player Comments on Forest of Darkness

The genre is one I generally like: Find yourself in an unexplained and foreboding situation, work your way out of it while uncovering story, plot and trials to overcome on the way. I even seek out games (CYO and Computer too) in this genre.

Sadly this game doesn't pull it off. At the beginning I was thinking 'Ok, simple set up that leads to the unusual, good so far but I wonder how the next elements get introduced?'. Sadly they weren't, you are faced with choices which boil down to luck and have no place for logic or reasoning in determining the outcome. I really do hate 'Insta-deaths' being the main source of an 'alternate choice'.

The story was also on the short side with little character or plot development. This actually dissapointed me more as the entire time I kept feeling that with a bit more time and effort, this could have been really good.

Add more description and flavor to the text and broaden out the actual choices and world behind the adventure and this could be great.

Well I thought the game was cute, nice amount of endings and not badly written. Only problem I had with it is that it had so many paths where the choices were "go left" or "go right", which I find kind of annoying. I like choices you can make based on logic or personality, not just a random guess.

Kind of fun. The story has various branches, each with its own story, which is nice. However, nearly every death involves plummeting or breaking my neck, and I don't feel any real connection to the adventures. A good next step would be to introduce another character who could interact with the reader on a meaningful level.

A fairly well written story. Though, I did tire of the choices that relied entirely on luck. :P

4/8 choose this - live. Choose that - die. Not much fun when everything is luck. But it seems to be finished which on this site is a major feat! Not the best not the worst.

Didn't think I'd be able to just sleep through it and be okay lol. Good story.

Too curt, too many ways you can die, not enough substance

i dont quite get why all the deaths are so peaceful... id prefer more pain, and gore. but its really well written, you set a wonderful atmosphere! i didnt get to all of the endings, but its good. not too cliche, better than ghosts and werewolves - i like the fortune teller bit, too.

It is certainly better than nothing, but I strongly suggest that you add a plot.

I thought this storygame was very imaginative and descriptive. It was fun to play through and read all the different endings. However there were some things I didn't like such as the fact that almost all the choices are based purely on luck.

Having said that, there were way too many links that had unforeseeable consequences (read: death), no character development, and many situations where I felt restricted (for instance, when I came across the old woman by the water, my first thought was, "great! I can ask her about the forest, see if she knows how to get home," but instead my only options were to go across the river or swim).

5 because there wasn't much discreption in the story. I'm shure if you would have inclooded more discreption of areas, characters and longer conversations between characters I'd have given it a better rating.

Well, your writing wasn't completely horrible but the ceaseless random choices and annoying grammatical errors made this story very tiresome. I would have liked to see more of a plot arc and fewer contrived sequences of events.

That was Ok. But it was shorter than you said it was.

It's alright. "Well spent lunch break" is an overstatement. Most of the time felt like just guessing a random choice.

That was quite enjoyable! But there are some things you could explain better, like half the things wandering around in the woods that you see. But still a good game!

I liked it. it was alright, very linear, and i liked the 3- different safe endings you could get. the castle one was the most adventourous, but WHY did you make getting the power of flight = death? ;_; you don't even give us a shot!

Eh, It was alright. You misspelt feeling, you called it "fealing". The owl's riddle was also rediculously easy. Bo reckognizes this story's existence

That was interesting. The first ending I got lead me out and was probably the shortest route without any hope of adventure. Then I redid it. Died, died, then I succeeded the more adventureous way. I suppose it's pretty linear since a lot of the choices are death, but I'm not complaining. It was short and easy.

3/8. I guess it was okay, but it was confusing.

I'm not rating it yet, because it needs one touch up, the pictures. Most of them are broken, could you fix if possible, please, thank you. It is looking good so far though, and I like the guessing aspect of it, reminds me of games like Dragon's lair, which I like. A sequel, or even spin off from this could be good. I'll fully play this and rate it once the pictures have been fixed.

Good writing ability. The only thing is, the choices don't require any thought-- choosing left, right, stay put, etc. without any clues to what's right, is a random guessing game. (But a lot of published CYOA are like that.)

actually enjoyed this game but it's too unpredictable. Great pics, love the fact that it's a different game each time, but the choices don't leave a lot of room for real reasonable thought... make one like this that has a real story and i'll feature it.

What the hell? I walk off a cliff? Oh, well this game is a LOT (with flashing neon arrows and big bright lettering around it) better than your previous games. Um, keep trying though, you're getting better. Maybe your next game really could be the best stinkin game ever. Well, not really, but anyway...

Wow! Great game. There is excellent story telling and excellent pictures. It's also very simple but it can be. The game is based on pure luck as you play. I say bravo, bravo. You have written the best classic (short or medium) long game on the site.

Short, but much better than your other game, The Best Stinkin' Game Ever! The pictures were nice, and if only you had written more and correct some of your grammar mistakes, it would have been very good.
