... Yeah, so this is a stupid idea, but there's been a few times when I've been looking through the forums and seen funny posts that people have written, so I have a little giggle to myself and go to click the "Like" button... Then I realize I'm not on facebook.

I know it's not going to happen but a like button would be awesome! (Also a dislike button could be useful if a certain amount of dislikes meant that the comment got deleted, that way troll posts could be gotten rid of if there weren't any mods or admins around. (Then again, it could also backfire, 'cos the troll could just make multiple accounts and use them to dislike the same comment over and over until there weren't any.)) cheeky

It has to be a ratio, not a specific number. If a thread comment has 200 upvotes and 25 downvotes, then it shouldn't get deleted. It should be a ratio.

A timer should be added for this idea as well, so that 1 dislike can't instantly delete a post. Heres how it should be:

If the ratio of like to dislike is equal to or over 1:2 then the comment will be kept.

If the dislike to like ratio is 3:5 then the comment will be deleted.

This will be decided after a certain amount of time, such as after 24 hours of the comment/reply is made then whichever ratio is true, the appropriate action is taken automatically.

--------------------------------
With your idea of a certain amount of dislikes it wouldn't work. If the certain amount of dislikes was set to be 25 to get the post deleted, then even if the post had 500 likes - as long as it had 25 dislikes it would be deleted. So it would be very easy for a troll to abuse it.

However, with ratio's it would be very hard to have a troll delete a post. If many people liked one forum post, then it would take over half as many dislikes to have it deleted.

-------------------------------
I think this is an excellent idea, it can also help clear up and archive some old posts :D

Of course it can be refined even further to say, any post by a Moderator cannot be rated. Therefore any post by an admin or moderator cannot be deleted. A script could even go as far complicated as to say only if the post is a new thread - will it not be able to be rated. That way there is no problem for an administrator to reply to something, and not be able to delete it.

It could be implemented into the 'new look' of the website somewhere :)

Or we could leave it as is and not give people another tool to screw the site over.

I just said it wouldn't screw the site over o-o

Lol, nah a ratio thing like that wouldn't work, since that way posts would get deleted even if they only had 1 dislike... But again, it wasn't really a serious idea that I think the site needs, and if it was implemented, it'd probably be better to just have a like button so that dislikes don't hurt people's feelings cheeky

That's the reason for a timer... so that the reply/post has enough time for people to upvote it and see it. It's not meant to be instant, if it was 1 dislike would ruin the entire post instantly. The ratio idea works over time. So if something is posted and gets 1 dislike instantly, it won't be deleted until several others have seen it. 24 - 48 hours should be given before the site checks the ratio of likes-dislikes on a post. That way, it's enough time for many people to give an opinion.

I 'like' the idea of a 'like' button, but...

Yeah, I just don't see this going well. =\

I think this would probably be pretty hard to implement? Plus, although I think this might be a cool addition to the site, I'm sure alexp would put this as super low priority if he were to implement it.
