What if people could become a fan of or favourite authors, either on the authors member's page or on any of their stories. Then on the profile of that author, it would have a # of fans stat.

Functionality wise, becoming a fan of an author would (provided you have a valid email), send you an email whenever one of your favourite authors published a new story. I think this would help people who only come here occasionally hear about new stories they might enjoy. Or maybe it would just send a PM/Alert to their account, so the next time they log in they would be informed of the new story.

Just a thought.

To me this is the same as Friends? (with a slightly different name) and a friend-activity notification system. Not that there's anything wrong with that... on Twitter it's followers, on LinkedIn it's connections, etc... and on each of those sites you get a notification about what your friends are up to.

So, I do like the idea, and I think the benefits are that it will help w/ sight growth and member retention.

Which works out nicely, since it's much easier to implement... no need for a "friend request" etc :-)

You could bring out a trophy to do with fans as well. Not for having a certain number of fans (that would be kinda pointless), but for having the most fans out of all the members on the site. Pick an arbitrary number like 3 or 5, and then the 3 or 5 members with the most fans have a trophy - sort of like how the bug hunter trophy works.

Might as well just create a trophy for being endmaster :P Not a bad idea though, except for the fact that they could cheat by multi-accounting.

Perhaps we should call it something different. Friend implies a mutual relationship, where what you're talking about is more of a one-way thing.

DeviantArt has 'watchers' where you can 'watch' your favourite artists and get notifications when they post something new.

No one called it a friend system though lol. Alex only showed the similarity between this and a previously requested friend system.

Personally, I think "Fan" is the best way to describe the relationship.
