Hello, I'm new here.

I have recently decided to enlist myself upon this site for a reason unbeknownst to me (actually, I guess for fun). I have no idea whether I should attempt to write a story or just comment upon current ones. Is there anybody available to give an opinion?

Hi, welcome to the site!

You could always do both, although I do tend to recommend spending some time reading and reviewing before diving into any major projects. You get a good sense of what's possible with the editor and the CYOA format, and of the quality level readers are looking for that way. Critiquing other stories also helps hone your skills you take a more objective look at your own.

The site has been pretty slow lately, for whatever reason it always is in the summer, and so an extra person actively reviewing things is doubly appreciated right now.

Anyhow whenever you do get ready to write, make sure you take the time to proof read and polish and do a complete story and all that, and take any questions or feedback requests to the Writer's Workshop. No sense in rushing out a half assed story unless you're in a contest. (but in that case, it's traditional!)

Also don't feel like you need to jump into a giant project right away. If you're not used to writing CYOAs it can be a little overwhelming, you've got all the stuff a regular story needs multiplied exponentially as it starts to branch out, and it can really get away from you. I think 90% of newbies decide they're going to write some epic, bite off more than they can chew and then get frustrated and are never heard from again.

Well anyway have fun and all that.

You can do either one you want. You can take the normal approach (what mizal said) or, although not recommended by even me, my approach (diving right into making a story to learn the ropes). I vote that you take mizal's idea.

As Obi Wan once said: Hello there.

I think you should do whatever you'd like. If you feel like writing a story, just make sure you put effort into it and the people here will offer you advice in the reviews section. If you don't want to, don't.
