The Thalmor, a cult of High Elves from The Elder Scrolls, want to destroy the material world because they think it was created by a trickster who wanted to cut them off from their true, godlike forms. This is a concept from a real-world Christian heresy called "gnosticism" meaning  "knowledge".

Tolkien originally  wanted to call his high elves "gnomes" because of the root "gno-" meaning "knowledge", but he clarifies he means "knowledge" not "wisdom". As stated, this is the same root as "gnostic". So the Thalmor are literally "gnomes".

I don't know if anyone else has picked up on this but personally I find this sort of thing rather fun.

Don't read about TES lore while smoking weed, man. It's a dangerous combination.

Yeah, the Thalmor would believe that the Mundus is demiurgical, smug scheming filth that they are. They're almost right in some ways, but they look into this notion not out of a desire for a more enlightened or truthful philosophy, but out of a desire to bend reality to their own ends. They have familiarized themselves with the subjectivity of this dream world, and have intentionally banned the worship of Talos as a blow to the races of Men that magically harms them all. The Thalmor ultimately seek to return to an age of barbaric slavery in the guise of a glorious lost civilization because they have no true souls. Theirs is naught but the accursed ambition that drove the omnicidal destruction of Lyg, reincarnated into the hearts of mortals even lesser than the Dreughs who first wielded it. Any who would support the third dominion deserve nothing but the sword, for their grandeur is delusional and their only desire is tyranny. May the soil of Tamriel drink their worthless blood until not a drop remains-- Pelinal take every last one of them!

If you ever see a Thalmor, kill them on sight. Trap them in a soul gem and hurl the gem into the ocean, so that they will be left waiting for the end of days imprisoned in a black void, waking and dead at the same time.

But it's a good point about the Thalmor's manipulation of reality to their own ends. They're a lot closer to the God Learners of the Glorantha universe I'd say.

But as long as we're all here, someone give this man's new game a pity read. He worked so hard on it! Therefore I hearby absolve all CYStians of the shame that would usually be associated with the act of voluntarily reading an MLP fanfic. My Little Pony: Sunlight and Shadow It is okay to do this thing, just this once. You have my permission, and a guarantee of pardon.

"This man's new game a read" You're silly. I'll give her story a read and a review, I told her so in DM's, seems like a true passion project so it's the least I can do, even if I don't know much about MLP.

Pretty sure flutter's a guy, but unless he verifies one way or the other we can all assign our own head canon.

Mizal got it right. Funnily, Pegasus and especially unicorns used to be indicators of masculinity, but that all changed, as far as I can tell, with Disney's Fantasia.

These are not the same thing and you know it!

True, although personally I prefer Applejack's method of defeating the Chimera to Bellerephon's (and Applejack doesn't come to such an unfortunate end...)

I watched a couple of seasons back when it first came out before the internet made it weird. It's a well made show.

But like, even John de Lancie found the overenthusiasm of the fans abnormal, and that man obviously is a veteran of nerd wrangling and has seen some things.

For me (and I was invested in the fandom right since 2013), the whole thing was absolutely wonderful. It was this vast, multi-source movement with artists, animators, reviewers, fanfic writers, musicians, and then in between seasons you had fan theories and analysis about future epiosdes or world building. When people discredit all that by focusing on the weirdos, I can't help but think of the mirror from the first part of "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Anderson.

I am truly shocked. I've just always assumed it was a show generally geared towards kids, especially a younger female audience. Evidently i must be wrong. I guess that just makes reading your story all that more intriguing once i get to it (lets just hope i don't become a bronie too bros).

I assumed that most people who read it wouldn't be fans, so I wrote in such a way that it works just as well (maybe even better in some ways) if you haven't seen the series. What I was trying to do was to write a story that would put across how I feel about the world and the characters to someone completely unfamiliar, so hopefully it should be enjoyable if I have done it with any degree of success.

That's good to know! I'm probably going to dissapear for a week after today I'm afraid, I have a lot of studying to catch up on, but when I come back we will see if I become a bronie or not. Not to mention I've been neglecting my girlfriend (not giving her enough attention, she's probably going to wither away at this point).

This is how I can tell you don't know shit about the world. MLP fans are usually right wing Christian men for some baffling reason

Yeah, it's like assuming someone with an anime girl avatar is female--almost never the case.

But it's a wholesome show that teaches good values, and it's for kids but with good enough writing their parents can enjoy it too.

I just don't quite follow the step that makes these men become the ponies, but then most obsessive fan communities baffle me. Maybe @ISentinelPenguinI can explain more, as the keeper of all knowledge on internet subcultures.

(I am obviously excluding the people who just like to see cartoon pony porn, I think we already know what their deal is.)
