Storygame type question

Quick question: Instead of making just one big story about a topic, could I instead make multiple stories all based around that topic, and have you go to the next one each time the current one ends?

yes you can!

Thanks for answering so quickly. I do realize that I can technically make (almost) anything when it comes to a storygame, lol.

I have added some clarification now

Some clarification because I realized that this might be a tad vauge:

  1. How hard would this be considered, when compared to the "normal" way of making a storygame
  2. Has anyone else done this before?
  3. My idea of this is something like a collection of short stories all set in the same universe. (Think along the lines of the Marvel "What If" series.)

(Having to post this as a reply because people respond to things so quickly, lol.)

People have done this before. Check out Mizal's "Read my stories or die!", Ogre's Explorer Inn, and there may be a few others. Other people have integrated short stories as a major plot device, like Camelon, since his story features a storyteller who, depending on the quality/style of his stories, may or may not get the money he needs to go on the journey he's attempting.

I'd recommend you read all 3 to get a feel for this style.

Heck, if you want examples from published novels, Dan Simmons's Hyperion(which I've recommended on here a few times), and Canterbury Tales both do this. Hyperion is actually based on Canterbury Tales interestingly enough, except in Hyperion, the pilgrimage is to the home of a giant metallic spiky monster who travels through time, and impales people on a giant tree.

Hyperion is great. Still dreaming of Tesla trees.

I know right! It's such a good book. I did not expect half of the weird crazy sci-fi stuff when I first started reading. Dan Simmons takes all these complex ideas and does such a cool job of weaving this intricate epic science fiction story. And I also loved that the story doesn't just end with the pilgrimage itself, but the pilgrimage also acts as an imbalance that shakes up the tenuous status quo between the hegemony and the AIs. Really great series.

These are all good storygame recs. I also recommend checking out Bilbo's I went to the graveyard for a great example of an anthology with a building storyline. (Hint: Don't use the go back button)

That's less a game and more of a story, but it's 100% valid. Now, you could do a little anthology where each one has a choice or two, with slightly different outcomes. I've been "working" on one like that for like seven years. Probably will never finish XD.
