The Docking Of Points

one year ago

Please help me. I've got this new message that some admin has docked my points, and I've no idea what it means. Please help me. If this means that I won't be getting any of the points I've been working hard for, then does this mean that I must just delete those two story games I've almost finished? I have no other go. It is just too distressing. I've been working so hard, spellchecking them at every single turn, and yet, they re docking my points. But why? Does this mean that I can dock someone else's points too? I really don't know.

Well let's see if we can break this down!

>I've got this new message that some admin has docked my points, and I've no idea what it means.

Hmm, I think this means that an admin docked some of your points.

>If this means that I won't be getting any of the points I've been working hard for

I think what it means is that an admin docked some of your points. It means you've lost the amount of points that were docked.

>then does this mean that I must just delete those two story games I've almost finished?

The one that's seven pages long and the other one that has only one page? No, not unless you want to.

>I've been working so hard, spellchecking them at every single turn, and yet, they re docking my points. But why?

I think the message from the admin that's next to the amount of points that were docked explains the why.

>Does this mean that I can dock someone else's points too?

Are you an admin?

Well there you go, I hope this cleared up some of the confusion, and have a nice day!

Thank you for the clarification, Mizal. I think I've understood what exactly has happened, except for one minor detail - I don't know what "docking points" exactly means. I've never heard the term "docking" before, and I would be delighted to know why someone has done this to me. I would also want to know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

So before I respond, what part of that DID you understand then, I'm curious.

Well, I understood that some admin had docked my points for some reason. However, the mentioning of that reason was a little to brief for me to comprehend in utter entirety. Hence, I asked to know exactly what the phrase "docking of points" meant. However, you were too brief as well, and I was yet again denied its comprehension. Thus, I asked you once more, and you have given me this lazy doubt as a response. Curiosity quenched yet, Mizal?

I'm sorry if you felt in any way insulted by this answer. I just couldn't think of any other reply for your curiosity. Apologies.

Okay, that didn't really answer my question.

But I've gleaned from this that you don't know what docking means, where or what your points are, or why they were docked.

But you still understand what has happened as far as everything else, such as

...well anyway, as Mayana mentioned (and I'm so glad she's posting again to help newbies like you through these difficult times) if you're confused about what 'dock' means as a verb, then it's a really good thing that dictionaries exist! I'm happy for you.

The points and the message saying why they were docked are accessible from your points page. If you've never even noticed you had points or a points page before this, then there's really no reason to care about them or panic.

It should be quite obvious if you just check your point history, but OK, here:

Let's say you have 41 points. Precious, shiny, totally not pointless points that you worked oh so very hard for.

Then you do something stupid, as is the wont of noobs. Bad boy! An admin decides to give you a penalty, a punishment for your misbehavior (spamming, in this case).

So they dock/remove/subtract/deduct/take away 10 of your points, with the reason "Spam comments". You now have 41 -10 points. That's 31 points.

For more information, you can check the dictionary; dictionaries are wonderful! For example, you can read the second definition for the verb dock on dictionary.com.

A measly ten points means it was a nice mod like Berka too. But of course, now he's on the forum....

That's okay, but what does "spamming comments" mean, exactly? Oh, and also one more thing - when the admin docks away my points, do they get it, or are the points lost forever?

Maybe you should just come back when you're 15 or 16 and these things might automatically be clearer to you.

I'll take that as an insult. Thank you very much.

The points are gone. They aren't physical objects that exist no matter what, just numbers.

Spam comments are those that don't include any opinions about the story, much less constructive criticism that could help the author improve. That includes advertising (By Viagra t0day!), random letters (wofDje91HFw), comments completely unrelated to the game (I like cookies and pants!), random insults that have no constructive criticism attached (I hope your mom chokes on a banana and dies!), and so on.

Did you comment on any storygames recently? Well, then an admin thought your comments were useless in some way. Take it as a warning, and try to write more helpful comments in the future.

Thank you, Mayan. But I don't think you understand that I have done NO SUCH THING as you have mentioned above. You see, I have recently only commented around 30 times, and none of those times did I provide an example of any of those things. Hence, unless they docked my points for commenting more than once in the same story game, I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear.

Thank you, anyway. Your help means a lot to a newbie such as myself.
