Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Just finished reading Unwind by Neal Schusterman and... damn. It is pretty disturbing.

Anybody read it? Thoughts? Flame comments?

Never heard of it. Disturbing how, exactly?

The premise is... *ahem* Actually, I'll read the back cover:

"The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between 13 and 18, however, parents can have their child 'unwound,' whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. [this is set in the future, so 'science' makes that legit.] Connor is too difficult to control. Risa, a ward of the state, is not talented enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived. and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape- and to survive."

Sounds weird (and probably kinda stupid), right? Everything makes sense as you read, trust me. It's a good read.

Hm. Yeah, not going to say that's not an odd premise for a story. I'm going to guess that the writer is pro-life and that the concept came from some rather bizarre musings on the subject, but possible agendas aside ... it's basically a "fight for our right to survive" story and that is a common enough concept.

Surprisingly enough, the book doesn't really take a stance at all. :\ But yeah, the writer was probably pro-life, idk.

idk.  I mean, all the problems happen because the state makes abortion illegal.  And the "religious" people are generally presented in a pretty poor light overall.

Also, there's that scene with the baby.

I don't recall the baby scene, but I do remember Levi's family being a bunch of dicks.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell an author's views from his or her writing. George Orwell and Ray Bradbury were both socialists whose writings focused on the perils of overbearing government.

Sounds really interesting. I'd definitely read that.

Heh. I was actually just looking at that in the school library today. Only thing stopping me from checking it out is that I was already in the middle of reading a different series.

When I read 'Mind Screwiness' I always get worried that no matter what the thread is about it's gonna be some Bioshock: Infinite kind of shit... Is this some Bioshock: Infinite kind of shit?

surprisingly, no

Oh thank God. Seriously, if something like Bioshock: Infinite's ending rolled around again then I'd have even more fucking headaches...

Haha, for a while the #1 negative review for this on B&N was:  "This book made me think, and I didn't like that."

I only read the first one.
