I didn’t want to derail crookedsmile’s thread, so I’m creating a new thread.

@Malkalack

With AHS, I sort of have love/hate thing going on with it.

The major problem the show has is that they go into 50 different directions with whatever their theme is that season. This would be less of a problem if they had like 23 episodes a season where they might be able to wrap them all up within a reasonable time frame, but they don’t so everything just seems rushed or pops up out of nowhere. If they just focused on a few major plots, the show would be better overall.

Coven though was a mess and the worst of the lot. I wasn’t into the whole witch school concept anyway. Felt like I was watching a witchy version of the X-Men school especially since they killed off like every character at least once only to bring them back to life again.

(Haven’t seen the Hotel one yet)

As for Bates Motel, I couldn’t even get past the first episode and I turned it off shortly after they killed the fat drunk raping Norman’s mom. Have no desire to watch any more of the show.

It was just really bad and I’m usually pretty forgiving when it comes to horror shows.

Oh my god I so agree with you about AHS.  No time to keep discussing now.

I love AHS, but I haven't seen Bates Motel, though I doubt I will with your criticisms. Still, with AHS I love the actors and Season 1 had me hooked. I'll admit, Coven had some flaws, but it... had a pretty cool Minotaur for thirty seconds. And... that's it. They wasted Evan Peters on being a stupid zombie thing, the ability to fuck your enemies to death is literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard, there was a weird racial thing going on, and it was just... a piece of complete shit. Still, I loved Murder House and Hotel, though a few of the twists were a bit obvious.

I don't suppose The Walking Dead counts as a horror show by any stretch of the imagination... but other than occasionally grumbling about how GoT butchers the plot and characterization of the novels, it's the only show I watch. So... I should probably quit stalling from writing and show myself out.

Why wouldn’t Walking Dead be considered a horror show?

Though I stopped watching that one just before the two brothers were fighting in front of the Governor. Just couldn’t stand the characters and writing anymore. The comic is far superior.

Still, I might go back to it when the show is finally done and try binge watching it from where I left off.

I think most people consider it way too much of drama. I like the show for the most part, but so much of the supposed 'horror' comes from cheap tricks that are washed, rinsed and recycled. People falling down while running for no good reason. People constantly getting circled by things you can outpace with a brisk walk. People being unimaginably stupid for no legitimate purpose other than to create a dangerous situation. I basically watch it as an action show to see how much butt Norman Reedus can kick and how Axe Crazy Rick can get.

EDIT: So yeah. The writing can be pretty awful.

In my personal opinion, biggest flaw of the Walking Dead... Who the hell's idea was it to make Rick the leader? I mean Shane seemed to be doing a pretty good job of holding the group together before he showed up, then out of nowhere bloody shoot everything that moves, get everybody killed, make sure everyone who doesn't agree with me dies in a horrible way while I'm talking to my dead wife Rick comes along and in unison everybody goes, "Oh yeah, this looks like a stable guy. Lets all do what he says now... Like seriously, every single fucking stupid decision he makes, let's back him up on it because this guy clearly knows what he's doing." cheeky

I think they might just be afraid of him at this point.

More axes! More crazy! Much more Daryl! This is what the show needs!

On a more serious note, I was super excited for this season after the first two or three episodes. Then the writers decided to kill all of the momentum and action by doing stupid little worthless crap for the rest of the season until the very end - with the lone exception of the Morgan flashback. Some of it was just cringe-worthy.

Horror Shows

Honestly, I think the whole point of this season was for the writers to go, "Hey everybody, look! We're not racist anymore! See, none of the black guys died! Infact we specifically put together a small ethnically diverse group of people for a suicide mission just so that we could kill off all the white guys and have all the black people and the asian survive... See, not racist!" cheeky

Shane's the best!!  New Rick is basically Shane 2.0.

At least Jon Bernthal's still working. XD

@Briar_Rose: yeah my wife still brings up how Hershel just kinda abdicated all decision-making to Rick.

"Let's talk a lot about what to do, then all stand back & let Rick do whatever"

"Let's all have Rick make every decision for us!"

"Let's not put all the responsibility on Rick."

"Let's split up!"

"Let's try to fit in with these idiots, & act like we had no idea Rick was so crazy. "

"Until most of them get eaten & we can get back to our core group.  And that one new guy."

Horror Shows

Meh, I'm not a big Shane fan. I really liked him at the beginning but I'm not buying the whole "all of the bad stuff he did, he only did it to protect the group" shit that everybody else seems to think.

But yeah, that is basically every episode of the Walking Dead. Even on those rare occasions when Rick lets the others have a say and make a decision as a group, he'll then go, "Hey, you know that thing we all decided we were going to do... I don't feel like doing that anymore, I'm going to do something stupid that gets the most recent, unimportant character who's name nobody can remember killed off instead." ... Then everybody goes "Sure Rick, whatever you want to do buddy." And the most recent, unimportant character goes, "I fucking hate you all." ^_^

Yeah, but the comic doesn't have Daryl heart

Horror Shows

Daryl & Carol.  Also Rick & Michonne: Carl likes her, & she's way more interesting/competent.

Horror Shows

I thought Carol was in the comics - but has an entirely different character arc.

EDIT: Oh, are you referring to the actual couples... To quote Rick Perry: "Oops."

Horror Shows

Carol is in the comics, but she doesn't handle the zombie apocalypse very well after Tyreese cheats on her with Michonne and sort of goes into a downward spiral.

She even tries to talk Lori into a three way with Rick and ultimately sleeps with one of the Hershel's older sons before letting herself get  her throat ripped out by a zombie.

Technically there is a Daryl in the comics, but he's not the same type of dude. Half of his face is burned off with an iron for one thing.

Horror Shows

Wait, Michonne’s more interesting and competent in the show? Did they do something very different with her in the later seasons? Because from what I saw of her, she was damn bland compared to her comic version and a lot less competent. (Though all the TV characters seem less competent compared to their comic counter parts EXCEPT for Shane!)

Carl likes her in the comic as well.

I still hate what the show did to Andrea's character.

Horror Shows

I personally don't get all the Andrea hate. I kind of liked her for putting bloody Lori in her place, and telling Beth, "Oh, you want to commit suicide? Here's a razor kid, try not to eat anyone when you come back!" cheeky

Horror Shows

For me, I just really hated the severely different direction that they went with for TV Andrea since she was pretty shrill and annoying a lot of times. (Wasn't a fan of what they did with Dale's personality either)

Comic book Andrea is fairly pleasant and rational right from the start. Later she's like the best sniper in their group and she's one of only main starting characters still alive (Besides, Rick, Carl and Sophia).

Though I started not to mind TV Show Andrea when she hooked up with the Governor since it seemed to be a better fit for her.

Horror Shows

I liked Dale too, I think I tend to have liked all the characters that everybody else hated and hated all the characters that everyone else liked... But then I didn't read the comics, so I can't complain. cheeky

Daryl & Carol? ... Nah, I'm not seeing it. Plus I'm thinking Daryl might turn out to be gay... Which would be awesome! The media needs a fucking hardcore, motorbike riding, crossbow shooting gay guy. ^_^

The only two gay dudes sound like meek permavictims from Portland.

My dad's been watching TWD since it began, in fact that Halloween I dressed up as a zombie to celebrate. We watched it together for a while, then I stopped watching about mid-season 4. Jumped back in when Season 6 premiered and the next thing I know all this crazy shit happens.

I have like twenty episodes to catch up on in order to find out what's happened, who bit the dust, and who the fuck these new dumbasses in Alexandria who can't fight or survive for shit are... Seriously, how the fuck did they build a community if their leader isn't even smart enough to shoot zombies in the head?

The show's definitely spiraled down in quality since Season 1. If they just kept it like that, they would've had a good show. Daryl's still kickass, though. Wish they would introduce him in the comics.

AHS reminded me a bit of goosebumps when I was younger as It was different stories from different people who sometimes ended up meeting each other. Im probaly way off but first season confused the hell out of me. I want to get around to watching freak show though.

Yeeeah, Coven sucked. It was on a lot at one of my previous jobs because one of my coworkers loved it and I guess it was better than working in total silence, but ... ugh...

You know whats the shit? Black Mirror. It's not pure horror, but more of a psychological show. It's pretty awesome.

My ex and my current girlfriend are both obsessed with AHS, so I've had to sit through a few of the seasons. The first didn't really make sense, considering one of the biggest points of the story is that the spirits who reside there never leave the house, even though it clearly showed Tate at the beach early in the season. The camera work pissed me off, it made an otherwise decent storyline seem choppy and rushed.

The second season I didn't watch entirely, but it bored me. Only thing I remember is being confused at why a guy decides to be an evil bastard because he has a small weiner.

Never saw Coven.

Freakshow was good, I actually liked it. It was still rushed, but not nearly as bad as the first. Only thing that I thought was real weird was how Jimmy hated the Strongman guy who turned out to be his dad because he was responsible for the death of his friend, but once he learned he was his father all along, they just never brought it up again, even though it was his central motivation for the longest time. Loved the ending, though.

Hotel is alright. Kinda confusing (what a surprise) but it's decent.

Walking Dead is the closest thing to a horror show I watch, but it's more of a drama now. Really loved the 6th season so far. Best one yet easily, even if they did waste two damn hours explaining Morgan's past.

Lol, I think the guy being a Nazi doctor had more to do with him being evil than him having a micropenis (Though that probably didn't help)

Actually I thought Asylum was the best season and I liked how Freakshow directly connected to that one in some ways.

Horror Shows

In my opinion, the are no good horror shows available at the time. The Walking Dead is good, but more a drama than horror as stated above. The first season but the best to me though. AHS is okay, but I agree that it's too rushed and it also was best in the first seasons. For now, I give up on finding a true "horror" show. I want a show that is scary and dark. Make a show based off a Richard Laymon novel.... now that I would pay to see!! (Just my humble opinion.)

Horror Shows

They could very easily construe GoT as a horror if they and Martin had a mind to do so. Hell, they could even do a spin-off, following the poor peasant families as their world literally burns. But Martin works hard to write the story a specific way and despises fan-fiction, so this will never happen. Honestly, I'm stunned he hasn't lost his mind over the absurd plot deviance in the show... or the sad caricature some of the characters are.

Horror Shows

Oh sorry. I worded that incorrectly... I apologize. I meant a new show altogether. And not necessarily fan-fiction either, but rather a work that truly chills you as you watch you. Laymon although not widely known/read had a knack for setting the scene that had you anticipating what horrible fate awaited a particular character at a certain time. I just wish for a horror show that stands up to the name "horror." Horror shows/movies today lack a vital aspect somehow. I don't know. Just my opinion and probably not widely shared.

Horror Shows

I understood what you meant. T'was just an example of a modern work that could be horror but was taken in a different direction. I agree with the sentiment about modern horror lacking the 'horror.' So much of it consists of jump scares, rape for the sake of rape, stupid characters doing stupid things for plot convenience, etc. Have you read either of insanebutvain's horror stories here? They're not epics, but they pack a nice quick punch and have strong imagery. Highly recommended.

Thank you for the recommend. I will check them out when I get the chance. To date, I haven't had much of a chance to read many of the stories on here. Though I have read a few. At the moment, I'm totally immersed in creating my first story. The CYOA genre is fascinating to me, but I'm steadily hitting road blocks at this time with the advanced editor. As they say, all things with time... Maybe I should take advantage of the current roadblock and check out how other writers' stories are laid out. Could use some nice gory scenery along the way. :D

Just sign this here petition for HBO to make an unabridged adaptation of Stephen Tunney's Flan. Closest thing to Silent hill we're going to get on TV without the great Weeb Sea forming a tidal wave of butthurt rage and mass debating about how they did or didn't ruin Silent hill more than it was or wasn't already ruined.
