It is still only planned and has many issues to overcome. Having a specific volunteer chosen is a start however the many issues still unresolved will most likely delay the date several times more.
Most surgeons and neuroscientists are still highly skeptical of there being any real chance for success at this point due to the lack of trials (animal trials and related surgeries are still minimal and lacking) and overcoming many of the roadblocks like limiting the neuron damage during the severing procedures and proper fusion of the nerves.
Another major obstacle is the planned coma period being so long right after a min 36 hour surgery and keeping the body and the head healthy to the point that it can heal and develop new connections properly and quickly enough to prevent atrophy, or worse, necrosis.
This of course is not even touching on the body outright rejecting the head and having a massive rejection reaction to it, so the body will need to be on massive extra medications to prevent reactions while in the coma and for the rest of the patients lifetime if they are even sufficient.
Just my initial reaction though if ppl want more details and specifics I would be happy to go into them another night.
