Progress.

Wow, that does sound exciting. I cannot wait to read this one. I bet it wins in a landslide!

Judging by the last contest, this, but unironically.

A landslide... Or maybe just by one point.

Should we open up points for betting, betting odds, and an entire betting table for odds on completion, length, win, place and show on this contest? ;)

Try again AzBaz

That actually sounds thoroughly entertaining. Somebody should set that up.

I think that by the time an odds table was sorted the contest would be over.  Unless we have a math genius and/or seasoned gambler amongst us. ;)

Wait, you thought it would be even remotely accurate?

I think what most people will find is that I generally respond to things as though they are stated non-ironically and non-sarcastically, sometimes even non-humorously.  It's something many people have pointed out to me over the years.  If I were in a comedic duo, I'd be the 'straight man.'  (As an aside, I'm not sure if they call it that anymore.)

Straight men are offensive! (and evil if they're white)

Try again AzBaz

Wrong kind of straight. ;)

Seriously though, you're pretty safe in the WW but don't go into the Lounge expecting not to find sarcasm and bullshit. That's like 80% of all posts.

I don't mind it in the lounge.  I just like (mostly) serious answers when looking for reasonable aid and advice.

In the classic comedy routines, the straight man is what makes the show! I love 'em!

Try again AzBaz

They are sort of necessary, but seem to be rather underappreciated online.  Perhaps it's harder to tell the contrast between a straight facer and someone who is just being annoying.  Of course, the straight man can also be annoying, so that doesn't help. :)

@Chanbot could probably do it.

But wow it's 3:00 already, I should probably start writing and all. But the Workshop sure is a happening place all of a sudden, this is nice.

I am both of those. I officially have a degree in math as of today and I love gambling.

I'm impressed; mostly because I can't make heads or tails of math.  Poor me.  I guess I'll stick to my paltry skills in English. :D

I flunked Algebra twice and then I realized that math is fake and a tool of oppression.

low tier maths like algebra or trig are taught like shit and I don't blame anyone for not liking any math they learned in high school or early college. they try to convince you it's useful but ultimately they're giving you a hammer handle and forgetting to tell you that until you get to the end of calculus you won't have a hammer head for the stick. they just spend several years trying to convince you was useful every day when it's only useful when you have the other stuff with it.

I guess it's useful to practice critical/analytic thinking but nobody needs to know the properties of logarithms or how to put a very specific equation into a certain format or w/e. It's all bs that nobody bothers fixing because the people who control what teachers teach don't like math and the cycle continues. Algebra has one ultimate purpose: You have a mathematical expression and you don't know what something is equal to - be able to manipulate the numbers to solve for it so you then know what it's equal to.

Arithmatic is used by everyone and pretty much everyone has it down by middle school. That's the useful basic math everyone needs to survive. Algebra? Only if you want a job. Trig? Only if you're building stuff or machining things. Calculus? Only if you want a STEM job or business degree. Linear algebra, Diff Eq's? You must be going into a real STEM field. Differential geometry, fourier analysis, real analysis, manifolds, and reimann geometry? Physicist or mathematician.

Math gets useful after you wade through the bs. Some people can't do it and that's fine - they'll just make due with a stick.

Edit:: This was longer than I thought it would be.

Well, you raise good points, so that's okay.  I probably don't even have grade 9 math in my head anymore.  But, honestly, I don't care too much.  As long as there are people who get math and science, I'm perfectly happy not studying them extensively.

I figured qualifying as a substitute teacher would be a good way to bring in extra cash for doing literally nothing but after barely scraping through highschool algebra they wanted me to turn around and do it again and lol just no. I ended up getting a job at a daycare which was actually WAY more work and responsibility than sitting at a desk telling some kids to quietly entertain themselves for an hour and yet shockingly required no education at all.

But all for the best in hindsight, kids suck now.

Well so far AzBaz's story thread is totally derailed. He might as well just make a new one.

Try again AzBaz

Hey now I wouldn't call it derailed. The topics of discussion were 'Untitled' and 'Progress.' That could mean a lot of things.

Try again AzBaz

I'm making good progress in getting to know folks and the quirks of  this site!  Also, I'm guessing it was so easily derailed because it didn't seem to be a sincere effort to 'update' anyhow.  If it was, and I misunderstood, I'm sorry.

If nothing else, the result of this contest is lots of threads and posts all around the place...

One word unplugged the cork to a shitstorm- not sure I want to know the consequences of this post but I'll have another go.

Dear diary,

Today I wrote a few hundred words about my Robin Hood story. I'm so excited to finish and hope everyone is really impressed with it and I get loads of really nice comments!! I researched the tale of Robin Hood and started using themes from the original versions to mash a bit of old with new. Still uncertain if I want magic, but probably will include it. Looking to branch it out a lot more because my coding the last one made me want to top myself and it was fairly linear anyway in the end. It's all fun and games though and the participation is what counts- everyone's a winner!

P.S: Maybe Stacy will notice me at school today!?
